Been watching your videos for years. Love showing them to my students. Back in the day you did have to use the string to start it but...you can also use the string to "hang" it. It will spin at 90 degrees due to rotational inertia. Do it!

Yo Crh, try locking the true balance toy from the bottom up, it's more about keeping your hand still and locking them together in a circular motion. I love your videos. I have to be one of your biggest fans.

That first gadget is basically a stator without the rotor shaft... the magnetic field being produced below is what keeps the top spinning

Spinning top is driven by two opposite magnets.

Basically coiled wires cause a change in magnetic field. I’m guessing the blue foil is conductive wire wrapped around the center hundreds of times. This causes a magnetic field. The topper has a south and North Pole and is constantly being attracted and repelled. The North is attracted in a certain direction and the south is repelled in a certain direction. This cause the topper to endlessly spin. However it does need an initial momentum to keep the attraction and repulsion constant
