@@mulligan64 yeah
They have a lot of panzers! Most I’ve seen at any collection!
With that 50mm barrel would have said was an H not a J model. Also with the divisional marking n G insignia would make more sense to be an H model either from 1940 or 1941 as I think the insignia means it belonged to 2nd panzer division in panzer group Guderian

Okay let’s talk, Your thinking about Panzer J1, This is a Panzer is a little different. The Panzer 3 J came out with the gun size of (5cm KwK L/42). These were sent off to the 2nd and 5th Panzer Divisions during September 1941. Then Hitler upgraded the gun with the longer barrel of (5cm KWK39 L/60) this came out in December 1941, So the sort barrel variants, had a sort lifespan. So They upgrade this gun because of the T34 tanks, during Operation Barbarossa. The G insignia still represents for the 2nd Panzer Army During 1941.
My favorite tank of ww2
Interesting that it has the tropical engine vents on the back! Has it been repainted back in German grey? Look at 2.10 the 2 covers welded open to vent the engine for North Africa! This could have a very interesting history behind the old girl being a DAK vehicle

More than likely it is a dak. was captured, cause of no fuel, or battle damage, etc.

Because of unexpectedly high attrition on the Eastern Front, a number of Pz. Kpfw III & IV tanks originally destined for North Africa were re-routed to units in Ukraine & southern/central Russia. These tanks would have been painted in the trop camo scheme & would have featured trop engine vents. This museum piece was built from a variety of wrecks found where the Axis-Soviet War took place, so it is quite possible that the rear engine deck was salvaged from one of the tanks originally meant to be sent to North Africa.
Where in Australia is the museum.?
