@@theferaldays Darkthrone had definitely the budget (they were with Peaceville at the time, a solid metal record label), but the band itself after the first clean technical death album decided to have for the next albums a raw "mixed in the bathroom" production and a change of the genre from death to black (with the opposition of the label), it was a choice. The difference of production of their first 2 albums is evident.

This, like many of the best Norwegian black metal albums of the time was produced by Eric "Pytten" Hundvin at the Grieghallen studio in Bergen. The cold production was a choice, not just a necessity.

blackmetal is something you need to get used to, to really enjoy it. the "bad" production was intentional, best example from the old norwegian scene would probably be the song "dunkelheit" by the one person band burzum. he recorded an entire album with an old Koss headset microphone and a little battery powered marshall amp. still quite iconic. for better production but similar atmosphere as here in this emperor sond i'd suggest you one of my personal all time favourites: "Thorns of Crimson Death" by the swedish band Dissection.

Hey TNT, if you actually check out Emperor's live recordings, they sound so much better, some bands are looking for the raw, low-fi sort of sound, but with Emperor it was always a budget problem, because if you check their later albums the productions gets better and better, so yeah, if you'd be down, With Strength I Burn, live at Wacken is a pivotal moment for the band and even the whole genre, just a magical experience!

Cool you dug it. There are symphonic black metal bands and albums with cleaner production for sure. It's just that 2nd wave in Norway that loved having their production sound like trash haha. But I've grown to appreciate the atmosphere it creates. The band Emperor would clean their production up on their following albums, and if you ever go back to them again, a good song from their later albums is "Curse You All Men". This other band "Dimmu Borgir" is one of the most popular bands in the symphonic black metal scene and their 90s stuff has a cleaner production than this, and some of it is pretty cool as well. I imagine you'll probably get some recommendations for them at some point. Their song "In Death's Embrace" is one of their best IMO.

the drummer on that album murdered a guy in lillehammer norway in august 1992. the late eighties, early nineties were very dark times for the black metal scene in norway. as a canadian, i traveled to norway in 2018 to visit many of the places of black metal fame in norway. norwegian black metal is unique. snorre blackthorn ruch is the creator of the guitar sound of norwegian black metal, along with euronymous. sadly, blackthorn was in the wrong place at the wrong time, as euronymous was murdered by varg vikernes of burzum while he was smoking a cigarette outside euronymous place. he took 8 years in prison. i would say that transylvanian hunger by the band darkthrone is pretty much the epitome of norwegian black metal. fenriz, the drummer of darkthrone is a very cool guy that has never been interested in some of the more extreme aspect of the norwegian black metal scene. he is a very nice guy.

Glad to see you listening to some Black Metal brother, definitely an interesting sub genre of music! Emperor is just the tip of the iceberg with a deep end of crazy bands that have been influenced one after the other. A kind of music that'll definitely take the inexperienced listener a while to get used to certain songs, certain bands, certain albums. It took me a good few years before I could start enjoying some bands. A recommendation is that you get more into the history behind this genre. Dive into the music and the Norwegian scene of the 90's, which is a part of the second wave of the genre (like Emperor), plagued with insanities such as suicide, murder, chaos, destruction, hate, building burnings, etc. My personal recommendations lie on the South American scene, especially Brazil and Chile. I recommend Sarcófago (I.N.R.I 1987) a *MUST* listen to record and band! Without Sarcófago there is NO Norwergian Black Metal scene. They are behind everything that MEANS Black Metal! While there is no insane chaos in this scene, the music is what gave the genre its essence and aesthetic. Trust me man, Sarcófago's debut album is a must listen to record! Another recommendation I can give you is Bathory. Not South American, but Swedish. Their debut basically founded Black Metal in itself. Enjoy the rabbit hole!

"It sounded like it was mixed in a bathroom" Holy shit I couldn't have put it better myself. I love black metal but the general low quality of their recordings can be a hurdle to get past for people who are unfamiliar. I legitimately think the bands should take advantage of the tools they have available but again I've always disliked making something sound bad ON PURPOSE as opposed to low quality because let's face it: not all of us have access for a studio or cash for the equipment at home.

Since you can't get into Black or Death I assume you're not a sucker for the evil sound so you can check out Burzum "Det Som Engag Var" or "Dunkelheit" for a more atmospheric beautiful ambiance than the typical melodic but diabolic tunes. You get the maximum potential off these songs when you try them in the middle of the night, with not a single ounce of light in the room and with your eyes closed, will float off reality. For straight up Thrash/Speed with a Black Metal twist check out Bathory's "Necromansy" or "Total Destruction". "Satan My Master" for the pure thrashing satanic grimness. For the mighty, powerful and diabolical sound give Dark Funeral's "The Secret of the Black Arts" or "My Dark Desires" a listen. Want that melancholy and sorrow? Search for Darkthrone's "Transilvanian Hunger" or "Hans Siste Vinter". "Kathaarian Life Code" is a great track too but not emotional or melancholic in any shape or form possible, it's straight up furious and gut punching. Death Metal influence but not so much that it becomes Blackened Death. Melancholy, sorrow and sadness 2.0? Nargaroth's "Seven Tears Are Flowing to the River". Nosferatu type feel? Elegant, fine, vampire, dark castle aristocracy? Type up Mayhem "Freezing Moon", "Funeral Fog" or "Life Eternal". A combination of everything above? Mutiilation's "Magical Shadows of a Tragic Past". Unbearable production for newcomers tho. These are some good tunes from the more "mainstream" bands inside the Black Metal scene. The songs are long but if you wan't to understand them and merge with the atmosphere you'll have to be patient. I'd like to get your feedback regarding your favorite style off these. Good luck! Advisory message! The Devil, also known as "Satan" could make an appeareance inside your residence. Not to diss on the other bands, but Emperor always rersonated a lot more with me since they could actually play their instruments and brought forward more progressive, complex songs. You should try Immortal, Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir if you're looking for stuff a little similar to this, but i'd also recommend classics like Darkthrone (my favourite), Mayhem & Burzum which have intentionally worse production but it's what gives them such a brilliant vibe & atmosphere (i personally prefer those bands.) You should also try Behemoth if you haven't already (they're more blackened death metal) & Taake & Watain too. If you go a little deeper into the genre i'd also recommend Drudkh, Shining (sweden), Summoning, Cosmic Church and Ulvers older stuff. There's so many subgenres in black metal there's really something for everyone tbh, so have fun exploring!!

check out Schammasch or Borknagar, I wouldnt necessarily call them easy listening black metal, but production is better, there is more melody involved and clean vocals sometimes, maybe they are a better gateway than jumping straight into say Darkthrone Xasthur, Silencer or Nightbringer or whomever.

How about Viking metal? 'Enslaved - Fenris' from album 'Frost (1994)' is brilliant introduction, proper Úlfhéðnar-berserker energy... Emperor released this song first on split album with Enslaved called 'Emperor - Emperor' / 'Enslaved - Hordanes Land'. (released 1993) Song is recorded more "accurately darker" at the first version in my opinion, I've never really liked this newer version when first got used it. Probably treble at 11 (or 666 or whatever) that makes it sound like it

"mixed in a bathroom" That's pretty much how all of genuine black metal is produced. There are some albums here and there with proper production and clear sound, but all the good, old-school stuff is what they call "a bee in a metal bucket"

Yeah dude, that was the spirit of the Time (1994) to have "necrosound". Let's say that after Dimmu Borgir release their "Enthrone..." album back in 97, pretty much every norwegian band changed their sound to clear! And as you might think, that separated the peoples opinnion about the sound thing! I personally have liked both eras, so it didn't ruin anything for me! :p if you Want to hear this particular song with "better sound", I recommend to check for example the live version from wacken! Even it's a live version, you can tell the difference! AND if you Want to hear even more Necro-sounding version of this song; pick the One from the "Emperor" mini-cd (it has this "death-rider" on the albumcover) which came a bit earlyer than this One you just listened (which was from the album called "in the nightside eclipse"). And yeah, hope you do more black metal! You could take a song from emperor's latest/last album "prometheus", so you could see the progression with the sound! I recommend to do the song "Empty"! ;) take care!

that bad production is what gives black metal its unique character. it gives it layers and layers of sound and atmosphere not heard in many other subgenres of metal. It never gets boring to me either, unlike death metal, where every song is focused on technical skill and brutality and of course the over-used guttural vocals. I can put on a Burzum album or a Darkthrone album and everytime be taken to another world with the atmosphere, bc the songs are more focused on that: atmosphere.. and not just shear technical or brutal heaviness for the sake of being heavy (like death metal).
