It's difficult to call Pink Floyd music, because it's always so much more than that. It's an experience.

Pink Floyd is Legendary, they're an Experience! And the way David Gilmore speaks through his guitar into our souls is unmatched imo. No one plays with the feel and emotion like Gilmore does, not in Rock music.

Absolutely, I mean purely on ability and influence I'd put Hendrix as the greatest but Gilmour as you said just has a truly amazing way of conveying emotion and has to be on the very short list of people just behind Hendrix

This song is a tribute to co founding member Syd Barrett, who the band had to let go after his heavy use of hallucinogenics like LSD, etc, turned him into a mental and eventually physical wreck. It hurt the band to see their friend go down like this, but efforts to help him were futile.

Not sure where you are in your journey through Floyd, but just want to pass along how important it is how you "listen" to this particular band...most Pink Floyd albums, are merely one long "song", back in those days we called it "Concept Albums" one song morphed right into the next, creating a non-stop experience, which was welcomed back in the 70's, since 420 was still "underground" at this time...glad you are experiencing the Floyd...Rock ON!

Floyd's music means you must first throw away your brain because you won't need it. The hollow is then flooded with emotions and feelings you never knew you had. This is usually followed by a cup of tea and a nice lie down before you repeat the entire process.

  • @DazzleMonroe

This one is about their former singer, Syd Barrett, who happened to wander into the studio while they were recording the album, and nobody recognised him. His weight had ballooned and he'd shaved his hair and eyebrows off.

Pink Floyd was formed in 1965... their (most likely) last album was "The Endless River" in 2014. PF had 15 studio albums... 3 live albums, 9 compilation albums not to mention multiple live dvds and solo albums performed by below members of the band. Syd Barrett (short-lived founder; guitar plus) the originator and quirky eccentric; inevitably the consequential muse. * January 6, 1946 (rip 2006) Roger Waters (bass) was the cultivator (seed sower), the lyrically conceptual prodigy, secondary vocal and co-maestro of songwriting * September 6, 1943 (age 79 years) David Gilmour (guitar) was the placidity, guitar virtuoso, the silky smooth voice and co-maestro; the equilibrium. * March 6, 1946 (age 76 years) Richard Wright (keyboards) was the essential underlying symmetry; musical nurturer. Occasional singer. * July 28, 1943 (rip 2008) Nick Mason (drums) was the heartbeat, structure and foundation; the sole member involved from the emergence of PF to the last recording. * January 27, 1944 (age 78 years) FYI: The following Pink Floyd albums are Concept Albums (all songs together tell a complete story)... Dark Side Of The Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979). The Final Cut (1983) is ify, as it was the last album with Roger Waters; leaving in 1985. *search on Wiki the album title to get the story behind the concept. You've got to check out the following tribute band! That band is called >>> "Brit Floyd" = kzread.info/dash/bejne/hKJ815V9aNbad6g.html (2.5 hours of the best of PF) ~ Gilmour, Mason and Wright have said, "If they themselves wanted to see PF live, the only way that could ever happen is to go see these guys." - I'm saw them June 17, 2022 in Phoenix, AZ!! \m/ * Roger Waters (original Bassist) and Friends did a concert of the double album "The Wall" in Germany (1990) months after the wall came down; very historic!! The stage was at least a block long... kzread.info/dash/bejne/pKinsMVrktKuaZM.html ** "Pulse" concert (1994) = kzread.info/dash/bejne/eqadu7SoqLrVYaw.html (click link's main description for "set-list")

David Gilmour - Guitar, lead vocals Rodger Waters - Bass, lead vocals Richard Wright - keyboard, vocals Nick Mason - Drums, vocals This song, in fact the whole album of "Wish You Were Here", is dedicated to Pink Floyd's co-founder, Syd Barrett. He was starting to show his mental illness (schizophrenia) and subsequently left the band.

I listen to a lot of old school Blues. Especially southern blues, country blues from way back when. That style is really at its core about expressing emotion but also taking yourself to a different place. I respect and appreciate all those dudes who created that genre. But how, in what universe, is it possible that a white middle class English dude is able to capture all of that, pull it in, and be even more soulful? I have no explanation. But Gilmour is a gift to all of us.

I think this is one of the best songs ever recorded. It's really beautiful. You can feel how relaxed they were making the whole Wish You Were Here album. Two years after releasing their most famous album "The Dark Side of the Moon" and becoming truly famous, they took on this project with vigor, wanting to celebrate Syd and to "lean in" a bit to greedy recording studios and producers. Brilliant work! I like it the best of all their albums. Unfortunately, after that, it only went downhill with their good collaboration.

Amazing track James. I have to confess i haven't heard this many times, but i do remember listening to it back in the Christmas of 1982 when me and a few friends gathered around the radio to listen to the Rock 100, and even then, they only played half of it. Love to hear you react to more Genesis. 'Mama', 'Follow you follow me', or 'Blood on the rooftops'. xxx And just to add, the top 3 on that countdown was Genesis - Suppers Ready at no.3, Pink Floyd - Shine on you crazy diamond at no.2 and at no.1 was Led Zeppelin with Stairway to heaven x

David Gilmour is one of the best guitar players in the world!!! I wish I had better headphones. I lay in the recliner with my headphones, crank this up & close my eyes & have a trip with no drugs. Pink Floyd is an experience! They put on a fantastic concert. I am so glad I was able to go to one. There was a guy slumped over in an aisle seat, unconscious through the whole concert. What a waste. I don't know if you've listened to THE WALL but if you haven't, my suggestion is to watch the movie. It will make more sense. If you haven't listened to DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, listen to it all at once, not one song here & there. It's better that way.
