It’s now been more than a year since Paul and Annett moved into their amazing off-the-grid tiny house on wheels in Byron Bay, New South Wales. This couple was on a mission to set up their home to run entirely off of renewable energies, utilising solar power, rain water collection, solar water heating and even a bio gas generator.

There is a whole lot of technology and systems that go into making this very clever off grid tiny house design work, and sometimes that means making adjustments to the way in which we live in a home and reframing our relationship with energy. There are lots of lessons here for those of you who might considering going off the grid. I hope you enjoy this very special revisited tiny house tour!

@Craig X Not to mention the electro-magnetic fields with which solar panels pollute the environment. And the couple's travelling - due to the money saved - adds even more to their carbon footprint, so definitely not "guilt-free".

@@misspeach3755 The typical Solar panel passes DC current from the panel to the charge controller. DC current produces minuscule amounts of electro-magnetic radiation. Google " electromagnetic radiation from dc current". In addition, the panels are sitting on top of a corrugated metal roof. That in itself will shield anything below it, especially if the roof is grounded. There are electro-magnetic currents in the earth below us that probably are far stronger than those produced by these panels. It is easy to be afraid. It is work to educate yourself to the science.

I love watching these tiny house videos and Bryce is always a breath of fresh air and delight. With Bryce as the star of the show it’s easy to forget about the cameraman (woman) because the filming is so smooth, professional and unobtrusive - its as if one is there in the flesh sharing every moment! But this truly is the product of a very successful partnership. Well done Bryce, well done to both of of you. Thank-you for making the world a better and a kinder place. Greetings from Switzerland.

Very cool to revisit friends living Big! Paul and Annett seem really down to earth--literally. Happy to hear they will visit Japan soon (if they haven't already). I am an architect focused on sustainability for 25 years and I live in JAPAN! I started writing a guide for foreigners visiting Japan 20 years ago (I visited 38 times before moving here) and I edit it from time to time. Happy to share it with them (or anyone) if they are interested--or guide them to some of the coolest places in Tokyo. Best, James.

And again Bryce, a great show. Super to have so much sun power that you have electricity all year round! Here, Sweden, it's impossible. We have a long winter sun is not coming high enough to feed the panels with UV. So need other recourses, like a generator, and af course one that uses vegetable oil as fuel to keep the waste ass a minimu. Water that we have plenty. And fire wood also. What I actually want to say is that every spot on our mother world has its advantages and its problems. Thank you for sharing. Enjoy

So much can change in an instant whether it's your health or your circumstances or your finances so I am really proud of you for saving so much❣️❣️💕💕😊 I love all your plants everywhere and I loved when you were asked what struggles you've had in the past year you neither one could think of anything it has been difficult this year because normally when you're building something new together especially when you live off grid there's problems and you both are so at peace with what you've been doing and you just seem so PEACE and who else can see that?? Not very many people❣️❣️❣️❣️🌈I can tell you that I'm much older than you buy a lifetime of reflective sadness! You have everything I wanted with my husband and we were very much in love, In fact all of our life we continue to be in love but it wasn't enough… He became addicted to his anesthesia medication as he learned it young in school training is it anesthesia doctor and it destroyed our lives and don't be sad for me because we both learned our lesson and we also learn to live small from how we began trying to live large in societies definition of how you should live… But I would've given anything for us to have what the two of you have....Living off grid and away from society because we both loved gardening and the outdoors and traveling and each other and it would've been nice to finished in a different way than we did and eventually he was unable to practice once he I was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis and such a sad difficult into his life. He was a proud man and we made the best of our time together and even in his last 12 hours we dance together and sang together you have to make your moments count and it seems like that's what you guys are doing. I wish you much happiness ♥️♥️🌈& I really love your tiny house and all the clever things you did and especially those big drawers in the kitchen and your Comfy Loft💕💕💕💕💕

In the right spot, wind can be a gift. A 10 Kw Bergey [Norman, Oklahoma, US] provided 80% of the electrical use for an earth-sheltered (non-tiny) house. At the time of purchase, the turbine cost $19,000 USD. [Unfortunately, the state was persuaded? or maybe lobbied? to pass a subsidy some years later which allowed a buyer to buy the same turbine for $34,000- $36,000, if it was installed by a certified installer (who couldn't be the owner!), essentially subsidizing a very high-end homeowner, and making it unaffordable to everyone else. A story for another day.] The lead acid batteries were the most recyclable part of the installation. The lead and plastic caps were melted down for other battery cases, the acid was used to neutralize hand soap. Had the house been a more reasonable size, the turbine by the lake in the windy location would easily have powered 100% of the home's needs. Research has demonstrated that four states -- Texas, Oklahoma, North and South Dakota, maybe? -- have enough wind to provide 3 times the electricity of the entire US current use. BUT -- the grid isn't up to the task, and the cost of upgrading it was not anything any politicians could contemplate. Certainly not now, in the time of economic disaster of Covid-19. Conservation is always cleanest.

In many ways it really is. I think the huge advantage when it comes to tiny houses is that it really increases the number of areas where you can park them. It would have cost a tremendous amount of money to get mains power to that sight, but putting some solar power and batteries there is easy. Plus, no bills! :)
