AMAZING Micro XXS 'Eta' INDOOR POWERED GLIDER: Daniel Hör (Picasso of Depron)
Daniel, a member of the DMFV Indoor Team performing at the Leipzig Modell-Hobby-Spiel Trade Fair, is widely known for creating fantastic radio controlled models from depron foam and this very small powered glider is no exception. The ingenious powering of the control surfaces through actuators which are powered through electronic speed controllers combined with the 0.2mm depron for the fuselage and wings keeps this model exceptionally light at just 4 grammes ! Gernot Bruckmann, famous RC pilot, flies a 50% scale Eta glider. This indoor model has wingspan that is half the length of one elevator on Gernot's model.

A glider of any sort should spend much of its time gliding. The fact that a Boeing 747 had all of its engines shut down in flight for a while doesn't make 747s powered gliders. Apart from the landing, did your airplane glide at all?
@Choccka
23 күн бұрын
...but the shape is definetly resembling the one of a glider. I bet a 747 not flying with any of its engines at all you wouldn't call a glider aswell, would you?! By the way very cool plane! @philipsmith1990

Hey Daniel - You English is far better than my German...which is actually non-existent! You did a great job in sharing the information about your glider. At that moment I did not really understand about the ESCs connected to the actuators on the elevator and rudder. Just fantastic. Thanks again. Dom (Essential RC)

How about just placing an electric fan on the floor pointing straight up ? This will get you your updraft.
You know, you should get a big reflector heater and set up a thermal in that room, then you can do proper glider-ing.

If this young man manufacturers and markets this model he will sell thousands and thousands
@jakegarrett8109
4 жыл бұрын
Even if he made $20 profit on 1000 planes, he would need to sell several new models per year to hit regular wage in the US (maybe if he sold 3k per year, and then at $20 profit per plane he’d break even with a normal decent job, not high paying but decent). I feel like the first thousand in a batch would cost a lot of money... Probably very labor intensive and manual at this stage. Maybe he has the funds for full scale mass production and full autonomous factory, but even then it would be many years to recoup that, but that’s probably the only way to make it worth it. I could see selling the designs and 3d prints as a side hobby for a few thousand dollars, but that means it should take up no more than a couple weeks at most of effort (with my experience of 3d printing, it rarely goes to plan, some don’t come out right, and a good printer like that model probably requires is very expensive, plus you still have upkeep and maintenance just like a CNC machine, speaking of which my FDM needs it’s worn out nozzle replaced, and thankfully has a fresh set of linear bearings but the linear shafts need to be rotated for wear reasons because I don’t want to replace them just yet, and the extruder housing has worn a bit and the compression fittings on my Bowden tubes are just about shot... Yep, my car has less maintenance, and it’s the notorious rotary engine RX-8!) I’d just sell the CAD files for DIY hobbiests and maybe a high premium for a kit. Full production seems like it won’t compete in today’s market where everyone will look at this like it’s a $10 toy or compare it to an $8 capacitor powered plane and the cost of $5 in servos/actuators and expect it for $20 total (instead of $20 profit on whatever it costs). But a few dozen might buy a $100 kit, that’s just not much money though...

For some reason I was expecting it to be a lot slower - I know speed doesn't scale with the size of the airframe, of course, but since it looks so remarkably scale at such a small size, the speed takes you by surprise.

@samuelyoung2671

Metaldirtnskin FPV Would need a larger wing chord, more lift and drag... but yeah i expected it to be slower, but it looks reasonably heavy as well so that definitley impacts the glide ratio
@johngallagher912
3 жыл бұрын
Wing is to scale which gives a high wing loading. Wing loading determines the speed range that a glider flies at. The glide ratio is not scale because of the very low Reynolds number-wing chord.
@thesoundsmith

I kinda _expected_ it to be fast, seems like such a small chord would need speed to get lift.

You are wrong ;) IRL or even in R/C the motor is used to climb to height then is shut off. In R/C outdoor types you then go chase a thermal or ridge lift and keep going without the motor.

@@joejoejoejoejoejoe4391 I have slightly larger gliders that will handle outdoor use. Generally 2-8 knots of wind looking at the speed it should do 'ok' in similar conditions without the motor. Low Reynolds numbers on the really narrow chord won't help either.
