Amazing Luffa Farming and Harvesting - How Luffa Sponges Are Made - Loofa Cultivation Process
Ғылым және технология
Luffa, a.k.a. loofa or loofah, refers to two species of gourd: Luffa aegyptiaca. Luffas are usually grown for loofah sponges so the fruits are allowed to mature on the vine until they turn yellow or brownish, and then peeled to reveal the matrix of tough fibrous tissues inside that act as wonderful natural sponges. Luffa-derived sponges are tough on dirt but non-abrasive and perfect for washing your face, body, dishes, floor, or car. Crafters even use slices of the dried sponge in soaps to create pretty and useful all-in-one luffa soap rounds.

My friends couldn't believe it when they watched me grow some and make luffas. Minds. Blown.

Called silk gourd in Taiwan and China. A much better material than plastic, totally environment friendly. Great for doing dishes and general scrubbing. People also use them to scrub body when taking bath or shower. Should use them as is. Does not make sense to attach them to plastic pad then seal in plastic bag.

This plant is mentioned in the Qur’an and is linked to the name of Egypt In the past, Egypt may have been the only source of this product We really have wonderful things, but we do not benefit from them economically like other countries

Fifty five years ago, someone gave me a loofa sponge for my birthday. I had never seen or heard of it. I have never been without one since then. They are wonderful.
In Andhra Pradesh( India) we used to call them in Telugu ‘Ammadi Beera kai’ and ‘Neti Beerakai’. It is very auspicious to eat in Kartikamasam (November December months).
My wife grows it in the backyard the young tender ones are eaten, and the over-ripped ones are turning into luffa sponges. The seed is saved for next year's crop.
I'm an Indonesian...we call it 'gambas' for making some vegetable soups, sayur bayam (spinach soup) or sayur bening (Indonesian clear soup). We only use vegetables (loofa, spinach, corn, or raw papaya), without broth in the soup. It tastes refreshing and sweet because we add some sugar and the side dish is corn pancake.

In Pakistan we have both kind of this plant / crop , one with rough skin and the other with smooth skin . Both kinds are grow and consumedas vegitables and eaten alone or with some combinations of food. It always picked when its seeds are very very smaal and the size is also very smaal but when it is grown up and become over sized and too riped , then people take seeds to preserve for the next season and use the rest of product as cleaning material in house holds .
