AMAZING GLENCOE - How the WEATHER influences Landscape Photography
When it comes to the weather it plays a major role in landscape photography. Just as much as light - it shapes light! We really experienced it first hand in Glen Coe, which is famous for hiking and landscape photography! In this episode I do Milky Way photography (who knew??) above Glencoe Lochan, I visit the famous Etive Mor Waterfall and climb the mountain Beinn a'Chrulaiste to get the best perspective of the mountain Buachaille Etive Mor and take my best photo from Great Britain! I hope you'll enjoy this epic vlog and learn just how much the weather influences landscape photography!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video! Really really enjoyed it! Love the night shot down at the Lochan, and the final Buachaille Etive Mor shot is spectacular! Actually, when I was young the Buachaille Etive Mor was the view out of my living room window (we lived at "the Kingy" (RIP)), our daily school run was the road down the Glen to Glencoe village. But I must admit I find it very difficult to bring myself to photograph this area, it's like I'm so used to it that it's just normal everyday scenery and I've probably taken it for granted for way too long now. So I'm trying to look at it all with fresh eyes, see this area as others see it and try to find a new appreciation for the scenery. And being able to watch your experience of photographing Glencoe is so so helpful in that respect, so thank you very very very much for that!! :) Now I'm very tempted to go and FINALLY!!! take my first ever photo of the Buachaille over the next few days. PS: good attempt at pronouncing "Buachaille Etive Mor". I've heard some crazy pronunciations before, so good job there! Just change the "Bua" to "Boo", and the "chaille" to "chal" - so "boo-chal", more-or-less (keeping the "ch" just the way you said it). Spelling in Gaelic makes no sense, I know...lol. :D

Wow! That's like the best comment ever Ross! :) I'm so happy I can influence a local so much! I can totally relate to the way of the beautiful nature around you being normal and uninspiring. I feel the same about most of Denmark... Wish I could change that. I used those "walkhighlands.co.uk" to find the right pronunciation, but very happy I now know how to really do it :)

Thank you, and no problem with the pronunciation help :D I was trying to think of a few other locations around here to suggest for you and others to check out. Perhaps one place that might (or might not) be worth scouting is called "Gleann Leac na Muidhe" (pronounced "Glen Lech na Moo-ee"). About 2 miles before Glencoe village (travelling from the direction of the Buachaille) there's a left hand turn up a track that takes you up there (possibly private, so might have to walk up). Then about a mile up the track there are 3 houses, but the track does carry on further than that. It's quite an isolated wee location, and the view looks back down the Glen toward Clachaig and the Aonach Eagach ridge. We used to live up there 20 years ago, and I have memories of walking back from the pub in Glencoe village or Ballachulish at 3am and being amazed at just how bright and clear the stars were once half way up the track and away from the lights of civilisation (other memories include falling/staggering into ditches and being scared silly trying to navigate past Highland cows in absolute darkness, haha!). Anyway, if you look on Google Maps for "Glencoe Mountain Cottages" you'll find the Glen location, and I think the closest parking would be on the main road just on the bend before the turn off or at "An Torr". Like I say, it might or might not be worth a look for any intrepid explorers out there, could be one of those places that looks great but doesn't lend itself so well to getting a nice photo. Think I'll add it to my list of places to check out though :)
I absolutely love seeing peoples reactions to Glencoe and those photos you got were amazing. Where you took those photos of The Buachaille is one of my favourite camping spots, its incredible with a morning cloud inversion.
Your amazing video portrays exactly the magic of the Scotland I so love. A Scot living in Switzerland for 50 years, I have always struggled to describe the difference in the the beauty of Swiss landscapes as opposed to Scottish ones. Your video gives the best example. Switzerland is like a stunningly beautiful fashion model, always photogenic and almost exasperatingly perfect. Scotland, especially Glencoe is untamed, uncompromising, moody and utterly unique. Her beauty can only be felt from under the skin and can only be appreciated from having weathered her storms. The bleak and ever changing skies, suddenly breaking into brilliant, ephemeral sunshine reward the brave traveller. Therein lies the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. You have captured it all so completely . Thank you. 🏴
Dear Mats, we were also in Scotland two weeks ago and also in Glencoe. I could so relate to your incredible enthusiasm for this landscape. My family and I felt the same way. It was just overwhelming and I don't know how many times I even said "Is this beautiful!" during the two weeks in Scotland. I had to smile so much every time you were so excited and fascinated. Next time we will definitely make the march up the mountain, the view from there is awesome. We also know the effect that a grandiose landscape does not necessarily mean a grandiose photo subject. We always call this "panorama problem". Thanks for the great video and the awesome photos you share with us. Many greetings from Germany.
I enjoyed your video on Glencoe very much. I recently visited Scotland for 2 weeks in August 2017. One week was dedicated to playing the best golf courses in the country and the other week was to travel the countryside with my daughter and see as much of the splendor as possible in that short span. My only disappointment with my trip was the day we went through Glencoe was the worst weather of the entire 2 weeks. Even so, the wonder of the area was apparent. Your video and enthusiasm, along with others that have attempt to translate the beauty of this special place through a camera, has convinced me that I will need multiple trips back to Scotland. My next trip will be more dedicated to photography thanks to the continued stimulus in videos such as this one. The people of Scotland are the best in the world. We could not rate anyone we met below a 9 on a scale to 10. There are so many places here in America to see, but Scotland is the Gem of the UK for being the complete package. I look forward to seeing you break the 1 million subscriber mark someday soon!!

Haha thank you Steve! 1mio is far, far into the future for sure! Unless I start getting all my videos featured on the big blogs, but they're just too lazy to sum up all the information in my videos - I guess it's not sexy enough ;) I hope you'll make it back to Scotland and witness Glen Coe in all its splendor!
If anyone is feeling jaded with their photography or the winter weather, they need to be prescribed this 20 minute fix of inspiration. I suspect that is a day you will remember for the rest of your life Mads. All of the images you showed are worthy of epic, stunning and other worn out superlatives. Brilliantly thought through shots and generous advice, as always. These locations will be superb with a covering of snow, if you are comfortable navigating... Haste Ye Back!

Omg wow miss Scotland not been since 2017 love you Scotland missing you bad xxx
I did a tour of Scotland last year, I know how you feel I felt exactly the same, the views were stunning. I liked your photo of the waterfalls, unfortunately I’m not a fan of long exposures of water.
Mads, just love your enthusiasm. It draws me to your videos....
Another brilliant video Mads. The Scottish Highlands are indeed as awesome (a much overused word these days but appropriate here) as you showed. Stunning images from the heights of the mountain I'm sure you have more in your hard drive. I am so looking forward to your Skye Episode, that truly is a magical location (no offense to Glencoe).

Thanks a lot! Skye is great, but Glen Coe was without a shadow of a doubt the best photographic experience I had in Great Britain! But it was all due to the weather and light. I could just as well have had this kinda weather on Skye :)
That photo taken near Glencoe , with the Milky Way reflected in the lake is insanely stunning. So much so that it's now my home screen. Sir, that's the most remarkable photo (that's not been over processed) I've seen yet. Top draw.
It's always about the light...and you had some fantastic light Mads. I have to agree with you the image of Sophie in the light ray is very nice, but the last image where the sun is illuminating the back side of the mountain and lighting the valleys on either side is truly beautiful, well done. It's great to see someone thats get really excited about the light.

I'm not a photographer but I love and appreciate nature. I'm going to Scotland soon, and your video makes me more excited. I have to say your enthusiasm in capturing the magical shots along with the background music brought me to tears :)
No, thank you! Glencoe is just 2 hrs away. I know it well. Looking forward to next Lofoten video. I’m off there mid April on a photo trip with pals. Sooooo excited and your first video is brilliant.
As someone who is planning to visit the Highlands in about a week, these videos are invaluable for me. Thank you so very much!
Speechless! I know the area very well and have climbed most of the peaks in Glencoe. Your images capture the soul and spirit of this special place. The image with the human figure on the plateau below the lens was incredible. It shows the scale of the glen, something I have never captured will trekking on the hills. Utterly fabulous.
It's rare that I can't find the words to describe the quality of something like this. The photo's, the filming, the passion you have!! WOW is all I can think of and even that does not do it justice. You made a Yorkshire man speechless and that really takes some doing.

One of the best landscape photography vlogs I've seen. Certainly as a series, but this one in particular tugged at the heart strings the most. I am originally from the Highlands of Scotland (live in Wales now), but my only regret is I didn't take up photography seriously before moving to Wales, because it's difficult for me to get back up there now. All fantastic images, Mads, but the last one with the mountain backlit was off the charts. Amazing! Your passion tells the story so well in your vlogs, and this is helped by amazing videography. It could easily be a commissioned TV series. Thanks Mads. I'm a relatively recent subscriber after watching your joint workshop with Nick Page in the Faroe Islands, so I'm playing catch up with your videos (yes, I'm addicted to them).
I've seen this video several times and I cant explain how it manages to give me the chills every time. It's epic. And I need to go to Glencoe.
