On the 20th January 1959, the Float Glass process was announced to the glass-making world which completely changed the future of glassmaking and the British Pilkington company. This process was invented by Sir Alastair Pilkington and his R&D team after seven years of experimenting and investing in the process.

An amazing process!
I went on a tour of a float glass plant in school. OMG so hot, I don't know how the workers can stand it!
Watching these machines work in harmony is like witnessing a well-orchestrated ballet. Only it's all gears and no tutus!

I kind of question the validity of the process. I think the trick is it's done with mirrors, yes?
It is so interesting and amazing🤩

Back in the day when Open University programs were broadcast on Sunday mornings, there was a maths unit about the dynamics of the scoring head; more specifically the need to accelerate it from rest up to a stable speed to make its straight score line across the moving glass. The operation is less trivial than one might think.
Very educational 😊

This would be great without the loud music like so many other industrial videos. How did that video tradition get started anyway?
Nice video, thank you. The thumbnail picture is wrong though - it shows rolled glass production, not float.

I would guess the plant runs 24/7 I don't see a way it could shut down without a big clean up of the excess glass Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up

They have a running period of about 10-20 years non-stop, it's simply not practical to turn them off. If they have supply chain issues and can't get the required ingredients, they will literally smash the finished product into cullet and re-feed it into the start of the line so they never have to turn the line off.

When starting a glass production line, the furnace is heated gradually over 3-4 weeks and checked that it does not fall apart! The tin bath is heated for about 2 weeks. On the day of launch - a holiday arrives - the “glass tongue” from the furnace is pulled through a tin bath onto conveyor rolls.

The water break process was a bit confusing as it was located in the middle of the line. How can the glass continue once it's broken?

@techman8817

It’s because they can’t shut off production of float glass (or would be very costly). So if they need to do maintenance on the rest of the line, they just recycle it at that point. They run these machines 20-30 years, 24/7.
I'd be retiring such big float plants as this size is becoming obsolete due to replacement costs.. They have been closing plants in the USA that have such large dimensions (as one closed years ago in the Decatur Illinois ares ). and the glass produced also have to be manufactured for other needs at the same time ..
Where the factory is located please mention that sir and the video was informative.

They mentioned that the molten glass is continuous and never interrupted. When there is a need for equipment maintenance further down the line, they don't stop the flow of molten glass but instead break it and send the shards back for recycling. This way further down the line there is temporarily no glass coming through. When maintenance is finished the water is turned off and the glass continues to flow again.

I was surprised that molten glass is floated on molten TIN😮. Thanks for that info
@lo2740

well the reason is clearly explained, that is the only way to isolate a zone of the production line, this is a continuous process, if amintenance has to be performed on the line, then the glass is broken before the maintenance area with thermal shock.

I know I’m 84 but I do know my way around a computer, and was programming before you were born. So please don’t treat me like a 5 yr old. I often have to have both. Those that like music can turn a radio on and have the music of their choice. People like myself do not have that option.

so basically what we do is put raw material mainly sand and some other materials (im not allowed to say lol) into a furnace which melts down the sand at temps of near 3,000 degrees. the molten glass is then put through a refiner and cooled enough to be put into something we call a tin bath, the glass floats on top of a pool of molten tin and is formed into whatever width and thickness we need using ads machines(they called them top rolls we call them ads or assisted direct stretch machines), from .9mm which i think is only made in two floats in our company all the way to 19.4 mm or 3/4" which is made on the floats i work on( we have two of the biggest furnaces in the world) after the glass is formed to our requiref width or thickness we cool it through the lehr(we also have the longest lehr in the world) we control the cooling as it goes through the lehr as to not shock the glass and to be able to control its cutting properties, after the lehr it is cut and packed to be shipped out
