Mattel’s Barbie doll is an iconic figure and a household name that many children play with and many adults purchase as collectible items. Although the Barbie doll has been around since the 1950s, there’s still so much about the doll that is unknown. Since being introduced in 1959, 351,000 Barbies were sold, and her popularity hasn’t died down since.
Barbie’s real name is Barbara Millicent Roberts, and she was born on March 9, 1959. Many people believe she’s from Malibu, California, but she actually originates from the fictional town of Willow, Wisconsin. Her parents are George and Margaret Roberts, and she has seven siblings in total: Skipper, Stacie, Chelsea, Krissy, Kelly, Tutti and Todd.
The first batch of Barbie dolls were manufactured in Japan in 1959. The very first doll was made of heavy vinyl, she came with honey blonde or silky brunette hair styled with bangs and a ponytail, and she was decked out in a white and black zebra striped bathing suit. Each bathing suit on every single Barbie doll was carefully hand-stitched.
After being released to stores in 1959, a total of 351,000 Barbies were sold in that year alone. Today, the doll is still quite popular, and every second, three Barbie dolls are sold somewhere in the world. If you place every Barbie sold since 1959 head to toe, they would circle around the entire Earth more than seven times. Although she was first released in 1959, she didn’t reach her peak until 1992 when Mattel debuted Totally Hair Barbie. The doll had long and flowing hair that reached down to her ankles. Upon her release, 10 million Totally Hair Barbie dolls were sold. She is still considered to be the best-selling Barbie that has ever been created.
She is definitely a fashionista, so to keep up with her ever-changing style and her love for clothing, Mattel has used more than 105 million yards of fabric to create Barbie and her friends’ outfits. The toymaker is now considered one of the largest apparel manufacturers in the entire world. When Barbie isn’t sporting her Mattel designs, she’s wearing the outfits that luxury fashion designers Gucci, Dolce and Gabbana, Givenchy and Versace have created for her. If you thought you loved shoes, your collection doesn’t come close to what Barbie is working with. Over a billion pairs of shoes have been designed for her.

Kaley^_^ How does nobody has put together that Barbie was released in 1959, meaning she was born in the 40s or 50s. Then it goes on to say that she has 7 siblings, and half of them are mixed. But what nobody has noticed that Kelly, Todd, and her mother were all dark skinned. Definitely wouldn't have been acceptable back then.. Yet somehow Barbie is this big famous person who has her own show, ran for president, and blah blah blah...

We couldn't afford a Barbie doll when I was a kid, but I had those cheap plastic dolls that were (kind of) similar, and I had a lot of fun with those! I still remember buying bags of cheap clothes and shoes to fit them from the toy store, and used sewing pins to pin the shoes onto their feet, and coloured sewing pins poked into their heads for earrings! I smile even now thinkng about it!

I don’t get it
I have 350+ barbie!! I collected them since 2004
It's funny how as a kid, I never actually owned more than 2 barbies which one was given to me, I always played with monster highs.
When my mom was a kid in the 80’s she had a total hair Barbie, sadly I never got to see it bc it got ruined in my grandmas basement, or we always assumed it did bc we never found it🤷🏼♀️
