DC is old school. After the era of semiconductor, we found a simpler and more efficient way to change V/Hz of an AC motor using PWM, so that we use AC motor today after controlling it by inverter from the DC source. 25 kV AC stepped down to 530 V AC. 530 V AC rectified to 750 V DC. 750 V DC modulated by inverter to produce variable voltage and frequency output to the motor.

DC series motors were used but nowadays AC three phase SQUIRREL CAGE INDUCTION MOTORS ARE used along with VFD IGBT fitted or GTO fitted.
