    As an American, I am always impressed with British enthusiasm for steam locomotives and wish there was as much public appreciation here in The States.

    Maybe because by giving these engines a "name", they gave their steam engines a "personality", sort of like the Thomas the Tank Engine series.

    Yes indeed there is a huge following for steam locomotives and preserved heritage railways in Britain. I think it has a lot to do with nostalgia. Nothing like a steam locomotive.

  • @treinenliefde

    @treinenliefde

    8 ай бұрын

    @@dianeunderhill8506it's more then just nostalgia I think, because if you look at other countries that still have steam on the mainlines (my home country of the Netherlands comes to mind, but I think Germany is similar as well) there is much less attention given to it. I think it's also just a part of heritage that people genuinely like to see in the UK, combined with perhaps a love for the railways of before. Look at all the charter runs and preserved railways, even things like the Pullman HST, they can't run on nostalgia alone. The cultural heritage aspect comes to mind as well to me.

    @@treinenliefde Yes, you are quite correct. The heritage railways make a lot of us hark back to our childhood when we caught the train to go on our holidays to the seaside. I do think we look at them with rose coloured spectacles as the old days in some aspects, certainly regarding the railways, were times of smoke and grime and an awful occupation for the drivers and firemen, a very hard life for them so it is difficult to understand our attraction to them, but we do seem to have an affinity with them and they do seem to attract a lot of people.

    The British have a keen sense of history and have tried to preserve their heritiage. Unfortunately, here in India, we have lacked this finer sense of appreciation. India being a collection of a huge number of unwieldy princely states then, each with their own railways and rolling stock, could have had the most diverse collection of steam locomotives ever, but our railway administrators chose to sell them as scrap. They could have been such a huge draw for tourism. A huge let down for railfans all over the country.

    Having grown up in South Africa I have a good acquaintance and appreciation for steam, right up to riding troop trains to military training camps, the journey sometimes taking days. There seems a worldwide interest and revival of steam fortunately. There was a huge graveyard of steam locos near Cape Town in the late 80's I remember. I recall long trips in Africa in magnificent carriages finished in teak and leather, beautiful dining cars and scenery. Rovos Rail have introduced a luxury train in this style. But nobody does stem better the Brits, thanks for sharing.

    When I was growing up in Youngstown, Ohio, my parents did not own a car. That was seen as an extravagance we could ill afford. We used the city busses and walked. However ,when we went to visit family in Pittsburgh, it was train travel. I remember steam engines, The Pennsylvania Railroad, New York Central, Baltimore and Ohio, Chesapeake and Ohio, Erie Railroad, Pittsburgh and Lake Erie, and ultimately the Erie Lackawanna. Train travel was fantastic, I still remember the whistle stops.

    I saw Scotsman a few years ago at Preston. I had a 45 minute wait and wandered down to the end of the platform where there were a few guys with cameras on tripods. ''What are you waiting for?'' I asked. ''Flying Scotsman'', they replied. Scheduled services arrived and departed and eventually about a dozen guys in hi viz and some in suits came down from the offices above. An announcement was made, ''The next train on platform 1 doesn't stop here, stand back from the edge'', and Scotsman appeared, light engine, tender first and dissappeared up the line almost silently. Camera shutters whirred, the suits, having had their look, returned to their meetings. I walked through to the other platforms. Mum's tended their children, passengers watched their phones, people ate in the cafe. They never knew what they'd missed.

    Some railway enthusiasts filming and taking pictures go crazy when there are people in front of them because they want a clear "authentic" view of the train. But I think - second only to riding along - the best thing about these excursions is crowds - especially with excited kids - appreciating the whole event. (At least as long as they don't take undue risks, which sadly sometimes certain people do.)

    She sounded like she was only running on 2 cylinders. Not 6 clean beats I heard 4 and half muffled beats… could have been blowing past one of the cylinders.

    You know people really are sheep, we all are, think about it. Someone stands close to the edge which is dangerous, the next person comes along and then has to do the same to see around the person in front and so it goes along the line. It begs the question, if the first person stood back say 6ft, then everybody else would too and everybody would be safer. As it is the people on the left platform have there backs to an approaching train which could be dangerous.

    This is why many train drivers hate enthusiasts, no clue on safety - and the regulars are some of the worst offenders, thinking rules don’t apply to them and their infinite wisdom.

    @@AHJ99. Back in the 1960s having a camera was a licence to walk all over the track. The worst thing is people do not even use common sense and as you say, the law is always made for others

    Well that's what the yellow line is for. If you're too stupid or ignorant then you're putting yourself at risk.

    Absolutely ridiculous!! All those silly people risking their lives for a terrible steam locomotive. Sticking their arms over the platform not knowing if another train might come and hit them? 😂
