My dad took me as a child to see a V16 BRM going round Silverstone. For added realism, it broke down after half a lap.

May be totally wrong but i think the incredible power from the engine would snap the drive shafts, we're blessed with much better materials these days to improve the reliability of these magnificent machines.
Been searching for footage of this thing being driven on full attack.... It sounds better than I imagined.

I would be very surprised if this is full rpm (peak rpm 12,000)I know from riding high revving motorcycles - not 16 cylinders though LOL I would estimate this is a peak of 8000 RPM, which would make sense if you read about the power curve and when it kicks in 8000 and up is when it starts to go stupid ! LOL
@ExaltedDuck
Жыл бұрын
@@malcolmwhite3567yeah, it was pretty tame at "normal engine" speeds. Like 300-ish horsepower at around 6000-7000 rpm. But supposedly peaked as high as 800-900 over 10000 rpm. At a time when 500-600 hp was almost unheard of (and remember, from just 1.5 liters displacement).

I am in love with the auditory histrionics of this car. Two banks of eight cylinders with amazing balance characteristics screaming at 12K RPM, who says engineering can't have sex appeal?

the only problem with it is for such a small (1.5) engine block it has a lot of rotating mass and energy being transferred all over the block. It puts immense stress on itself at full tilt which is likely what brings it such a poor reliability reputation.

He was being beautifully gentle with it.
absolutely the best F1 sound ever heard.
Best engine sound ever. No contest.

That is about the narrowest track I’ve ever seen! Perhaps on a wider track we might hear him really turn it loose? The fastest electric car in the world can’t give you those high RPM goosebumps!
Has to be the best sounding engine of all time - a mechanical symphony, So many others, (RR Merlin, DFV, Audi Quattro and Cosworth BDA), but this is just amazing.
That wailing harmonic.
If I ever get an electric car, it will play this glorious tune for all to enjoy ! 😍
I'm so glad I came across this. A while back when I caught wind some folks were going to build a new BRM V16 I was so excited. And to really see it on tracks now being given the full send literally brings tears to my eyes. Hats off to the folks with the passion for a legend like this and the driver who gives her a proper send!

Crazy run. Those tires are scary.
So exotic sounding and yet 1947. Wow!
What an incredible quality of sound that engine produces! Very rich, and the smoothness is astounding. Compared to the sound clip of Nick Mason's car, which seems a bit more rough (still eye-wateringly good), this engine is flawless.
Shame Mr Eddy Walder (the late track commentator) was not around to see this. I can guarantee he would be talking about this for the next few weeks at work! Awesome beast
My new favorite song ! Amazing
I could listen to this all day. Possibly the best sounding engine ever.

So cool this car, I am just reading an old book Raymond Mays, fantastic reading, Raymond loved the Shelsley Walsh hill climb. I am at the ERA point in the book, He was big on super chargers and pushing the limits of cars. Raymond Mays and his team of Men did wonders. The supercharged BRM V16 is a beast. The efforts made in those early times was impressive to get an English racing car on the racing scene.

This engine sound is better than any orgasm in the world ever could be, and believe me, I know from what I am talking. The absolute madness. This sound conveys a time as freedom still could be lived as this what it is and not like an artificial terminology as it is today!
one of the best sounding engines of all time. you can hear the start of the wailing sound that later naturally aspirated engines have.
Love the sound of that beast!
What an absolute joy it must be to fight the power between that V16 and the obvious understeer this BRM has. Great vid!
True work of art

Superb.
This video only gives us the low to high midrange of the rpm band of this incredible engine/ car. When the engine really reaches the powerband, the note changes entirely. It really sings over 7000 rpm. The growl goes away and it turns to a howl as the horsepower jumps to double and the tires want to break loose. You only get a momentary taste of it at 0:43.
Scary even to watch the video , never mind driving that rocket
