I like the idea of challenging yourself to mix something in a short amount of time, but I feel like the initial premise of learning the most important parts is lost when you go straight to sample replacement/enhancement because of the time limit. Would you consider doing some "quick mix" videos with a 10 minute limit in stead, giving you more time to process the sound before jumping straight to samples?

I agree. Even video type - how much time do I need to achieve good sounding drum mix. It will be 7 minutes - OK, maybe 13 it's still OK. Targeting to 5 says - replace all the sound with samples. After time stops we get more useful information that within 5 minutes with timer. :)

Great point! Thanks for the thoughtful comment. For the kick/snare what I show in the video is pretty much my exact process - get the drums sounding as good or close to the vision as possible - then add samples to bring it across the finish line. I do wish I had a little bit more time to talk about the toms. I realized that it would have been more valuable to have shown a basic mixing approach instead of just sample replacement. As a compromise, I added the text to the video (admittedly not the best solution). I will definitely keep this in mind for future videos though!

Maybe you should mix quickly in 5 or 10 minutes and at the end of the time, explain what you did, the plugins you used and why you made the decisions you made.

Nice, I usually use an SSL channel strip to shape, and Silencer to control mic bleed. But first I I start with Auto Align 2 to make sure I'm starting at a good place. I usually try to eq what I have rather than add samples...but that's just a personal challenge to myself. And you are right, mix the group after just a bit of each channel, so you don't waste hours, it really shouldn't take that long...Thanks, it was a good watch.

Nice work! You made a massive improvement to the drum sound within five minutes, I can only imagine what you’ll do in 10. I would like to thank you for your videos. They have helped me immensely. I have been recording for 15+ years, but have never, been happy with what I did since I’ve been watching your videos, I have a much better understanding of the use and function of plug-ins. Thank you unfortunately being a solo musician, I only have drummer plug-ins in Logic Pro to work with. I’m always looking to make a more massive sound out of these Digital drums. Would love to see you make a video for mixing these type of drums. Thank you so much for what you do. I always look forward to seeing your videos. Thank you.

I can absolutely do that! A LOT of people (myself included) use digital drums for most music. It's just so convenient. I was lucky to receive such awesome drum tracks from this band and wanted to share this with all of you. Thanks again for the support and kind words! I'm very glad that you found this video helpful - Cheers!

Hey mate - just curious as to why the shells especially kick and snare are stereo tracks? Shouldn't they be bounced to mono? If left as stereo they mess with your mid-sides on the overall mix. Not a criticism, just curious as to your thoughts :)

  • @RaytownProductions

You have a good eye! My pan law keeps it from messing with mid sides (at least I think). The reason for keeping it stereo is a cubase thing. If I decide I want to add samples later using trigger 2 like I showed here, I can use stereo samples. That's the only reason 🙂 Thanks for the good comment!

  • @zeclomal2265

Why would I want to mix my drums in 5 mins? Plus, as you were running out of time started to use samples , which means, no mixing skills at all if you just use them 100%. I love using samples but if that's all you use it sounds kinda fake. Don't get me wrong, as a challenge it's cool to try this but it has no value as learning material.

Before mixing the drums sound better, sorry. The mixing made everything harsh, the cymbals are very harsh and the drum shells are papery sounding with a honky decay. You may consider investing in some mixing courses from guys which are very good at mixing live drums, like Jordan Valeriote for example or watch some Nolly tutorials on the Internet to guide you in the right direction. I didn't meant to insult you, just help to get better! Cheers!
