2:04 | Amahewu is commonly prepared using mealie meal. For this type of grain you can also use sorghum in place of finger millet.

💯 by the traditional method, before Western influence, is definitely the sorghum based mageu. I’ve never tasted the sorghum mageu - really keen on giving them a try 🙏🏽

@@MagrizaMadeMeCook Not so sure about curry and international spices. But there’s a pervasive myth that we didn’t season/flavour our food as Africans and we just added salt. I refuse to believe that spices came from India and that we were lost before them - the people who were culinarily lost were the British. With them being colonizers here, they meld their cultural culinary history with ours which is rubbish. Tonnes of beautiful plants grow in Southern Africa. Herbs and all types of great plants that would be great as spices, I refuse to believe that we didn’t use them to cook cause there’s clear proof that we had a great understanding of plants and their practical use. Even if they try to erase our history, it’s clear in our language. We have names for TONNES of herbs and plants. That just shows how conceptually advanced our understanding was.

I live in England and I really dislike all the Mahewu sold at the Zimbabwean stores. It never tastes like the one I used to enjoy growing up in Zim. I will try to make my own now that I know how.
