Am I Too Old to be a Screenwriter? (Screenwriting Uncut #16)
One of the great myths of the film industry is that screenwriting is young man's game. In this video, Jeff blows a hole in that theory.
EPISODE 16: "Am I Too Old?"
Whether you're brand new at screenwriting, or you've been struggling for years, it can be tempting to blame a lack of success or opportunity on your age. We've all heard stories of ageism in Hollywood, and there's a perception that film is a young man's game.
But is it true? Is it really more difficult to break into the industry as an older writer?
In this no-holds-barred video, Jeff looks at both sides of the issue and gives it to you straight. It's certainly NEVER too late to begin screenwriting and you're never too old to write something extraordinary. But he also points out why you may have some challenges ahead, and how to handle them to maximize your odds.

am 67 yrs, old , just started writing 5 yrs ago, first real script- as opposed to' he said/she said' , has been accepted in Aust. for a Docu drama, start filming next yr. Off to LA in Nov. to the AFM. to flog my feature script- its never 'too late' . Thank you for this video.
I am 51 years old. Once upon a rainbow, I wanted to be an actor or something to do with the movie industry. However, I lacked parental support and my own lack of self confidence saw to it that I never pursued it. I had reading and writing skills at a college level when I was 14, so understanding has never been a problem. Though I have never had formal training in the art of screenwriting, I now want to learn. So, I have purchased a book that has taught me a lot about formatting and have learned a lot. I recently went as far as buying Final Draft software. I want to thank you for this video series, particularly this one. They answer a lot of questions I still have, especially on a personal level. The internet has been like a classroom to me.
I am 47 - and my age is not stopping me from creating my ideas - and as you said - I am in no rush - I have patience to let my ideas grow and develop. Once and idea builds solid foundations in my mind - then I craft it into my writing.
Thanks so much for that. I have been experiencing screenwriting since I was 16, and now I'm 20. I think that was very helpful to be honest. I came up with a lot of ideas for T.V. and movie. I don't care if it is a comedy or drama, I love creating ideas and I would like to bring them all to life. So once again, thank you for telling me all this.
Thank you! I would never think anyone is too old to write great stories.
I agree. I'm in my 40s and months ago had the brief question about age that lasted all of 5 minutes when i realized "They can't see me while reading my work." But in continuing the trail of potential issues, once they see me, excitement may deflate. So the answer is to just be confident and able to answer questions but also to LISTEN and be collaborative. Not desperate but also not rigid as some expect from the 40+ crowd. Well, every generations have their odd rigidities, but they present in different ways, especially depending on era.
This is the best channel ever created for an aspiring screenwriter.!!!!!!!!!
Jeff, thank you so much for making this video, I'm very grateful to you for doing it. I'm 70 years old, and recently retired from my first career. For sometime now, I've been wrestling with the wisdom of pursuing my life-long dream of becoming a screenwriter. I had a lot of concerns about the practicality of embarking on such a lofty, and arduous goal. But thanks to you, and your generosity in making this wonderful video, you've answered so many of the questions I've been wrestling with for so long. I now feel more confident that I would have at least some chance of succeeding if I try. My particular interest is in writing nice, very human comedy that's directed at an older audience, and dealing with the many problems and absurdities of life. And with all the craziness going on in the world today, I feel strongly that laughter is now more important then ever. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction and happiness when I can get people to laugh, and forget their problems for a while.
Very motivating video, Jeff, with the emphasis on putting in the time to get better. Your advice and genuine motivation to would-be older screenwriters is even more concrete because I have put in the time.
Very insightful, honest, generous advice. I'm not concerned (yet) but I hear you when you emphasize the importance of consistency, practice, taking your time and so on.
Loved the video. I am 77.. going on 35 maybe
You continue to motivate me , thank you !
I'm 25 years old, I'm writing my first script and I'm so glad of finding people of all ages in the comment section sharing their experiences and following their passion. That helps me to continue falling in love with this noble art of telling stories :)
Thank you for being so positive. You are truly rare! Before I could even send out my script to an agent, all I heard was "You're too old. You're too short. You're too ugly. You don't have breast!" Ya da ya da ya da. I know that "if you need inspirational words, then you shouldn't do it." However, I didn't appreciate people in the industry cutting me down in order to force me into being a ghostwriter and work for free before I could even try to make it on my own. The truth is that NOBODY wants to be a ghostwriter. Every writer wants to be recognized for their work and properly compensated.
Great encouragement for senior citizen screenwriters! I'm not a senior citizen yet, but my age "number" has tried to influence me in a negative sort of way. Talk about generation gap, I'm finishing up a screenplay about my relatively famous father who was born over 100 years ago.
I like listening to your informational videos. Thank you for sharing...very inspiring!
Another quality video. As a mature male, I appreciate your point of view. I'll keep learning to write that extraordinary story.
My my how I loved this. Bravo Jeff. Reminds me of a great book The Writers Guide. Yep, excuses. What's held me back is I'm six foot wide and one inch tall! Also if only my last name was Neville, I could have done great things...
That's about as concise and complete an explanation as it's possible to give. The disconnect between age and skill level is the oft-unspoken elephant in the room.
Very good!
