Am I Too Old For This?
Do you ever ask yourself that question? Many of us do , especially as we age. I was recently doing a solo overnight camp out and found some of the effort required to do what needed to be done caused me to reflect on that question- Am I too Old? What keeps us going, and when is enough enough- all relevant questions to consider. #solocamping #womencamping #oldercampers

It's never easy to explain to people just what being alone in the wild means to some of us. " " But what do you do there at your age ? " they always ask. " Nothing, just listen to the woods as the wind moves through the trees, watch the sunlight through the leaves, look into the fire at night " It leaves them puzzled, as they fail to understand that time " doing nothing" surrounded by Nature is not something that can be abandoned, just because of increasing age. 😊👍

I'm 64, and camp in my van after many, many, years of tent camping. I have had both hips replaced, and I'm legally deaf. I cannot hear any animals or noises around me. I used to laugh with my friends and say that ignorance is bliss, and there might be a bear outside my tent, and I wouldn't know it.....but I knew it would be a good idea to move into a solid shelter to stay safe. Hearing in the great outdoors, especially camping alone like I do, is now a no-brainer.

Sorry to be a downer, but age is certainly more than a number. It seems like the years strip away our options.
You say you were lucky to be on that beautiful camping trip. But it was you who created that luck. Yes, all the stars were aligned to make the experience run so smoothly, that, is special, maybe coincidental. It's like the weather, the lake, and even the wildlife conspired in cooperation to let your time in its parts go without event. You are still strong enough to load/unload/load again a canoe, paddle to your destination, set up camp/string your your bed between two trees, break camp and paddle out, is sign you are not too old which was your original question. To me, the clincher was you be able to sit in that low to the ground chair and get up from it👍. As long g as you can do that, you can do most things you want to. Thanks for bringing us along!

Never too old! Age is just a number. We purchased a cabin in the ADKs from a man who was 96 years old. He hiked, hunted and mountain biked until he was 100. You are so wonderful. I like how you are open to re-evaluating as you go along, knowing yourself and your strengths and limitations. I am in my 60s, a bit overweight but strong. I recently was hiking and encountered three separate groups of hikers who seemed very concerned and uncomfortable about me hiking alone on a moderately difficult trail. They all had advice about where to go and when to turn back etc. I always keep an open mind and listen, but was a bit disheartened. I am always over prepared and do self checks as I hike along to be sure I don’t get in over my head. It’s so helpful for me to see you enjoying life and continuing your adventures. Thank you!!!

Morning Wendy: I'm watching this while I'm working remotely at home. Very relaxing and enjoyable from my end, although the unloading and loading of your canoe along that rather precarious embankment with high water seemed challenging. But you did it and paddled away home. I'm glad that the pay off was well worth the effort! It's smart as we grow older to be more mindful and take things slow. I wish you many more paddling and camping adventures! Jenny
@wendyoutdoors2230

thanks so much Jenny- much appreciated.
As an elder, I think there is a cost to benefit ratio with camping and I'm not referring to money, but rather about effort and the capabilities of one's body,. I reside in a coastal area with heavy tourism in the less rainy months of the year. Although I have some special beach locations where I visit, they are not camping spots. For camping, I drive to Forest Service land in the coastal mountains where I have found some very beautiful and memorable locations where I feel very much alone with my dog and deer friends. Having said that, it's harder as you grow older to engage in such activities. Preparation for and unpacking after the camping trip seems to take forever anymore. The days of spontaneous camping are long over. There are times that all the work involved diminishes the pleasure of solitude in the natural world. I have attempted to reduce physical effort with a variety of tents, rooftop shelters and even a popup tent camper trailer designed for motorcycles. Results have been mostly discouraging. There are times that after arriving and setting up at my intended location, I ask myself with increasing frequency, "What am I doing here? Is the payoff worth the effort? " I truly admire your tenacity and defiance when your body and mind may be telling you a different story. By the way, your Wendy's McMuffin looked great!
@wendyoutdoors2230
16 күн бұрын
thanks David for sharing your story so honestly. Sounds like you are still going though so there must still be a payoff. Yes, the work does seem harder. I think that when we do decide to quit we will at least know we gave it our all then we can sit back and bask in the memories and the hard work memories will fade away. Wendy's messy muffins were great! I think that is what I will call them in the future. Messy Muffins!

I sympathize with what you’re going through, especially about the prep work taking forever. I’m trying to reframe that a bit and view it as camping preliminaries, i.e. playing with my camping stuff, which can be viewed as a fun part of camping😉. That strategy works especially well when it involves testing gear. Another strategy that helps is just to extend the amount of time one stays in the same place. Even two nights is so much better than just one night in terms of prep to payoff ratio. I’m getting back to camping after way too long away from it, and sometimes I feel like I’ve totally lost my groove. But I’m determined to carve a new one that fits my older and weaker, but wiser and deeper, self. Hang in there and keep finding joy in nature however you can.
I ask myself this question, too" When will I be too old to...? The answer for me, similarly to you, is when the payoff is greater than the effort. There are other normal activities like driving a car/truck, climbing a ladder to wash windows or clean gutters, working a full food production garden, doing fine handwork like needlework and sewing, doing large batch canning and food preservation in general, and so much more! As you stated, doing what we do with thoughtfulness and strategic planning, we can continue doing what brings us pleasure and maintains a high level of independence. It brings me pleasure to see you out in the wilderness. Maybe I'll do likewise.

As you said ... an individual decision: body's ability ... pleasure vs effort. This morning, I hooked up my Jeep to my 33 foot motorhome and delivered the motorhome to a consignment dealer. I've owned both for 19 years. I will be 69 in 2 months. It is partially an "age" decision but primarily a decision based on how I now intend to travel (PNW/Canada Southwest ... islands/ferries). Still, I am very much aware that I need to take it slower and more intentional than 19 years ago! It took me 2 weeks (mornings with breaks) to unload and clean the rv in preparation to sell it. Then the tow hookup - not incredibly strenuous but still more challenging than 19 years ago!! As I did all, I kept reminding myself: one thing at a time and there is no need to rush. That is so challenging as my brain works as a 40 something but my almost 69 year old body sometimes says otherwise!! May we all do "the things" as long as we can! Huge benefit to body and brain to keep on keeping on those things we love.

You're never too "..." as long as you can do things that make you enjoy life, safely and in tune with your body. You're encouraging and pure and radiant joy, however the effort, shows on your face. Thank you for sharing your journey and inspiring us to enjoy nature, whatever form we choose to engage in. 🤗

Many thanks Kalina- such kind words, ❤️
No, you are not too old, however, if you think you are too old and you no longer feel comfortable then you may be old. I'm 87 and still feel comfortable with what I'm doing. No I don't hike as far nor go as deep into backcountry as I did when I was 80. Enjoy😊

great Shelley- the joy of doing something you didn't think you could is so empowering.
You go girl! I do solo camps mostly in the winter so that I can snowshoe. My husband is a “fair weather” campers so he likes to go in our Rv but I much prefer the very basic back country camping that I do. I enjoy just doing things as I want to without worrying about another person and their agenda.

I agree, my husband is like yours- great in the van but not into the tent thing. I find being by myself works quite well although I enjoy company too. thanks for sharing .
You are never too old. You have more grit than John Wayne!!😊

You are very lucky where you live I hike with gals in their 60’s like me and a gal that is in her 70’s runs circles around us all up in Mt. Lassen Volcanic Park that we are so truly blessed to live near! Take care be safe and I can’t wait for your next adventure 🛶🏕

thank you- I have roots in Scotland, although I have never been there. Maybe one day!
This is a question I ask myself every day. Now at age 86 I'm finding that shorter canoe camping trips are pretty much my limit. However, I intend to press on as long as the enjoyment outlasts the pain. It looks like this video was shot here in the Adirondacks or Ontario, but my wife thinks you're in the Pacific northwest.

Wendy, I am so glad that you are still enjoying the adventures and the payoff is worth the effort. I’ve had to think about that myself a bit. I’m not as young or strong and so you do have to work smarter! As of now I’m still enjoying camping and kayaking, fishing I don’t want to think of the day where that’s not part of the plans anymore so we just soak in all of it now! You’re an awesome inspiration to so many. Your videos make people realize that they can do it too! You are my hero! Safe travels! Until your next video, be well❤️

I so enjoy your camp outs. I don't want you to stop your trips until you want to or think it's best for you. Until then, I m happy to watch and hope to be doing similar soon. My body won't let me do some things for very long but you are strong and smart and still really enjoying yourself. So that's my 2 cents. Love FROM CENTRAL OKLAHOMA

It would have to be 2 cents US as Canada hasn't had a penny since 2012 and the virtual penny that replaced it is virtually useless😂.
You are such an inspiration. I’m soon to be 68. Still looking forward to a few more backpacking trips. Looking into a horse camping trip and some kayak camping. Love your channel!!

Forest Bathing. Just back from an 11 day back country camp with a rainy forecast. I was determined to do the 11 days. It is good to get somewhat bored at times and learn how to entertain yourself. I am 76 and intend to keep it up as long as I can still enjoy. What I have found is that all that bending over drains me but having a chair around to take a little break seems to make it possible. None of my women friends ever want to hear a thing about my camping. And they scrunch their noses when I even begin speaking of it. They have no idea about me needing to use my Coleman Camp Shower or other alternative ways to take care of myself and I use a CPAP too. Hopefully I'll be able to keep doing what a love much longer. Thanks mom for making dad try camping in the first place...all in State Parks which I avoid. Haha.

My friend at 94 was still camping regularly, hiking in the back country with a group of older folks, but seriously he was the star! If you are still camping at 94 you still have MANY years of camping and hiking fun! :) Love your Tent/hammock set up... This is my first time seeing this cool option! Thanks for sharing your adventures!
