We decided to trade our busy life as home and business owners to chase the dream we’ve harboured for 10years.
How did we get here
After years of saying one day, we finally realised that these opportunities don’t just land in your lap and if we seriously wanted to make a difference to the Earth then we were going to have to stop talking about it and do it!
We sold all our stuff, got rid of the mortgage, sold our camper conversion business and landed in a dream come true. After traveling in our van we settled here in the west of Ireland. A place that has always been special to us. Annie is half Irish and since we met 13 years ago and she took me to meet her family i fell in love with Ireland too.
Now we’ve made this dream a reality there is no stopping us! our plan is to work hard, meet new people and learn new skills that will guide us on our journey of permaculture and creating a way of life that sings to us. One where we aren’t bound to the banks, working every hour and outsourcing all of our needs. A simple way of life, with connection to ourselves, each other, the earth and our community.

Most rural French homes have a hydraulic log splitter. You could probably build one from an old bottle jack and some pieces of angle iron.

Yay! Was hoping for a new video this sunday! Got myself a sunday coffee and enjoyed! Your place looked magical in the snow! And Annie... you have a way with words! I don´t know how to describe it but the way you word things and your timing, even if it is just short simple things, makes me feel deeply. I hope you do find the courage to maybe narrate some more bits or maybe you will find another formate for every now and then where you are the voice in the off? Even though I really love your normal very personal and uncomplicated vlog style. And maybe it does not even have to find a place on KZread, but I just wanted to voice that I feel you are a poet and it shows.

quick tip an old chippy thought me for splitting logs - use an old tyre and you can chop multiple logs at once without having to collect them after wards as they are contained within the tyre. keep up the good work lad!!
@OffGridBruce
Жыл бұрын
Thanks. A few people have suggested that now and I keep thinking while I’m doing it that I should get that sorted 😂 then I forget till next time I need it
hi bruce , if you nail a tyre to your chopping block, it prevents the split timber from flying everywhere, from someone who splits timber and has a bad back!

As a wise man once said processing your wood warms you at least 4 times. Cutting it, Splitting it, Stacking it, Burning it. I love it. Although using a Maul especially if not correctly is very risky if you have back problems. I put my back out for 2 months earlier in the year splitting wood with knots in it. Not worth it. If you must use it, I do not pull or swing it from behind. I now bring the Maul straight up toward the sky from my centre of gravity then let it fall forward and guide it down in an arc using its own weight and gravity. Actually the heavy the maul the better with this method and off course the quality and type of timber factors in too. But a log splitter would be a handy investment.

Hey Bruce, be careful with them cone splitters. I had one of them a few years ago, picked it up on donedeal near me for 150€ if I remember rightly. It was lethal! Spun the timber round & almost broke my arm on more than one occasion. If I was to buy a tractor driven one again, I'd buy an hydraulic splitter. I went back to my trusty splitting maul. Some people say the firewood warms you twice, but when you cut, (haul), split, haul, stack & then burn it, I think its more like 4 or 5 times 🤣

Nice late season snow! Very pretty! We are getting that, too, here in Michigan where I live. In fact, we seem to be getting ALL of winter in March after having a springlike stretch in February. And we had a doozy of an ice storm where 900,000 lost power. The joys of climate change are everywhere! Nice progress upstairs! That will be a supercool sanctuary for your girls! You two are such great parents! Cool that you stop working to celebrate things like a snowfall as a family! As much hard work as you put in, you do seem to have a much better balanced life than most modern families! Happy spring! 🍀💐🌷🌹🌸🌞🌼❄️❄️❄️
