    I found this video INCREDIBLY helpful! Been on a mixed voice journey as the lead guitarist and backup singer in my cover band. To sing really high harmonies i have been using head voice, and i started noticing it getting stronger and stronger. All of a sudden at home one day, i found i could sing Bon Jovi songs withoit too much difficulty in somthing that sounded and felt half way between chest and head voice. I was then EXTREMELY disappointed when i couldnt match this same full/thick mixed sound in rehersals and live. I had also noticed that using a whole bunch of compression on my mic with the desk helped get me closer to whay i can do at home. I know i still have a heck of a.lot of work to do but at least i know i have made progress.

    Love this content, man. You're 100% right about discovering something novel, attempting to implement it in practice, and realizing you have to kind of lead a double-life until you can really properly mix in the new techniques--kind of amazing. Just tells me I'm on the right track!

Not sure if more videos is best step. I have very specific things to work on, and I want to get on stage yesterday! LOL Are you available via Skype? Should I search locally?

    Not sure if you will read this, but thank you very much for such a detailed explanation of what mix voice is and isn’t. I’ve practicing my head voice for about two weeks trying to connect it to my chest register and couldn’t figure out what that sound is suppose to be. With your video I found it in a day. I used the cat meow sound and tried to identify all things you’ve mentioned: continues sound, soft pallet movement, pulling the voice back. Everything makes sense now and I can feel it. Thanks!

    Thanks Sterling. This video is so good. When i sing lightly, i can connect my voice, i was trying to mimic the sound you make on mix, the one that gets quieter as you go above, but i cant seem to do it. When i yawn, the muscle you mentioned below the chin moves, so im not sure if you need to like yawn when you connect (tilt the larynx). I hope you can make another video on tilting the lyrics to make it one sound.

  • @SterlingRJackson

    Thanks 😊. Well, hopefully I helped a little. When we mix the larynx moves down but can appear to stay more neutral which is what many people refer to as “maintaining a neutral larynx”. It won’t be perfect at first. But when you yawn your chin shouldn’t get tight 😳. Relax yoself ha. Keep working on getting the jaw out of there 😊😊

    7:54 "I just want you to know; I like to sing really loud." I'm not saying that's great, it just got that way from not knowing what I was doing and busking without a mic. Singing quietly doesn't really work on the street. 20:42 I like exploring by singing songs from divas like Aretha, Adele, Tina Turner, Dinah Washington, Anne Lennox, etc. I get to develop that higher range and I learn a lot from their phrasing as well.

    It might be worth noting that people of African descent usually have thicker vocal cords so, that might help contribute to being louder at least in the case of some of the old performers you mentioned 😊. I hear what you’re saying though. If it works for you then keep on doing it.

    To get rid of the jaw tension, is it a good idea to imagining forming the area from the mouth corners down to the bottom of the chin as a triangle? The bottom of the chin being the point of the triangle.

    I’ve felt that teardrop shape movement when I tried to use mix voice and my voice doesn’t get louder and gets a lot higher! I had no clue that was me moving up and around my soft pallet and that it’s a way to mix because nobody else ever talked it. Great video I now know that what I’m doing is in fact me using my mix voice!!!

    I've had a whole week of singing in a cool mix feel and hitting ridiculous high notes in full voice. I then lost it last night and it became tight and to thick or too much cord closure or something. 2 hours later it was back . I hope a day comes that it never goes or at least I could get it back quickly

    This sounds problematic like some things I was explaining. It sounds like perhaps your voice was swollen in a way that allowed you to travel up and down and sorta hit these notes but may not have been healthy. This can happen. Developing mix takes quite a bit of time and practice and there are many elements to it. One doesn’t simply just start “using it”. Either way I wish you luck and hope whatever you found helps your journey 😊

    I started a singing class a year ago even though I've been singing 20 years almost. I was singing in chest that whole time and yes it was decent and it was sounding good but I knew something wasn't right, I couldn't get any higher with my range. I started learning head voice a few months ago and I'm slowly learning to mix but it completely changed my singing voice and at first I didn't like it. Now I'm singing lots of radio head and learning to relax everything and I gotta say it's sometimes effortless to go thru all the notes. BUT... I know I still have a long way to go, I was thinking this same way about having 2 different voices😂 so I've learned to keep my class stuff separate from my regular at home practicing or gigs so I'm not struggling to keep it perfect all the time. It made me feel like I was in a race to be this perfect singer right off the bat, I'm progressing but I know it's gonna take a very long time before I'm comfortable again with my new voice. And this will be a lifelong journey. Thanks for this awesome video Sterling

    Do you give Skype lessons? I've been doing ktva exercises consistently for almost a year, range feels good and it feels supported when I belt. but I cant get grit or distortion without blowing my voice out and then waiting a day or two to get my range back. The mind games have started so I need someone to bounce off of that can guide me.

    My biggest problem is that i can sing some pretty high songs(smells like teen spirit for example i can do really cool and not too loud) , but only in the evenings and i need to warm up for an hour with light mixed voice , head voice and etc. How much time of warming up is normal? Also i hate songs that maintain a lot f#4 - g#4(hurricane by 30 seconds to mars is one that i deal with) ,i mean notes above are much more stable, and below is also not problematic. What's the key to that middle ground to hold them for a long time and stable? Also i feel big difference between my morning voice state and evening one. I have a voice little bit lower than you

  • @SterlingRJackson

    @SterlingRJackson

    Жыл бұрын

    Hard to answer all these questions through a comment. It’s difficult to train your voice to sing right on your bridge. The weight usually wants to be either a bit more head voice or chest voice. The key is probably still utilizing nasality and paying attention to your vowels and enunciation. I’d practice a bit higher and keep getting that coordination down first.

    Mule’s Supermassive Black Hole and Bee Gee’s Staying Alive are not breathy, but they also aren’t full voice. So what do you consider it? My challenge is bringing that range to full voice for songs that require that.

  • @SterlingRJackson

    @SterlingRJackson

    5 ай бұрын

    Supermassive black hole is sung in a combo of falsetto and head voice. I believe “staying alive” is exactly the same. Falsetto is always breathy. Your vocal folds are pushed apart to accommodate the extra air. 😊

    @Bob-uz4ov

    @@SterlingRJackson I always considered that reinforced falsetto. So what exercises can be done to transition to full head voice like the high part in Man in the Box? I have no problem with vocal slides going through breaks and I can go pretty high. I also understand lower abdominal breathing and I don't feel any tension unless I try to use full voice on some of those parts.

  • @SterlingRJackson

    @SterlingRJackson

    @@Bob-uz4ov hey Bob. You might be confused about a couple things here but no worry. I can’t really diagnose and provide exercises through KZread comments. The high note in man in the box is basically a full chest voice belted note at a G#4 I believe.

    Mixed voice is “mixed” because it’s combining chest voice and head voice. There isn’t a “limit”. It should expand to the top of your head voice when done correctly.

  • @SterlingRJackson

    Chest voice placement is just about as natural as speaking. Placement is referring to where your vocal cords are shooting your voice to in the mouth. Usually your hard pallet.
