Am I A Real Shaolin Monk?

I get called a Shaolin Monk all the time, even though it's not entirely accurate. In this video I explain what exactly my "official" title is and how the Shaolin Temple is organized internally.
It's still a very basic explanation. Obviously things run a lot deeper, so keep in mind that I definitely don't know everything about Shaolin Culture. Far from it.
Still, I hope you enjoyed this video!

Although it would be nice to call him that, it would kind of not disrespect the temple. I don't know the word, but it's just traditional that if you leave, then you are a disciple, even though he trained as one, he left so he's a disciple. But if he stayed at the temple then he'd definitely be identified as a warrior monk, but yes we can still call him that to show him love for his endurance and effort for training for three years.

I love your videos and your honest expression. I have trained in two styles of Korean martial arts over the past 23+ years (Tae Kwon Do and Sin Mu Hapkido). I have traveled twice to China and four times to S. Korea and I love both cultures. I have a huge respect for all true martial arts and students who have seriously studied any style or multiple styles. Conversely I have a huge lack of respect (bordering on anger) at the "wanna be fakes" who have never done the thousands of hours of sweating and training it takes to earn any advanced degree of knowledge in any style of martial arts. After my first four years of training I was asked by the Grandmaster I studied under to test for my 1st degree black belt. I felt so unworthy of the honor but I trained even harder to prepare myself for that day. My test went well but after the test with my new black belt in hand, I remember sitting in the changing room with an overwhelming feeling of not being worthy of this honor. When the senior Master instructor came in he sensed I had questions. I told him my feelings. He asked me if I thought the Grandmaster was an truly honest man, I said yes. Then he said , if the Grandmaster says you are a black belt, then you are a black belt and the other higher degree belts also feel the same. The point is, if the true Shaolin Warriors you trained with recognized you as one of them, then you are a Shaolin Warrior. A certificate or a colored belt or any other object cannot replace the respect of your peers. It's something I have learned to embrace. Thank you again for your videos and your honesty.

For many outsiders, when we hear the term "Shaolin Monk" they invasion people who grew up in the monastery, from young children, into adulthood... basically spending/devoting most of their lives there. You seem like a cool guy and three years is probably more than most adults could put up with, but three years is only three years. I'm glad you "came clean" and refer to yourself as a disciple, even though you don't like that term. Disciple basically means student, or to some people follower. Best thing you can do is to say, that you train Gongfu and are in tradition of Zen (Ch'an) Buddhism. Getting to know both roots, for me it easily explained what i experienced by practicing shaolin gongfu and wushu. You are what you do. It's a spiritual approach to accept that there are things that can't be named, like experience. Big ups for the clarification.

Tomorrow at work: "Dude, I sub'd to a Shaolin Disciple, who trained as a warrior monk in China yesterday" LoL. Really tho. For me, and I'm sure others. We get it. We understand. And we're glad we're sub'd to you. Your character seems awesome. Your thoughts and views are interesting. Your a badass to us, even if you can't even throw a punch, you don't have to anymore. You, as any warrior should want, hopefully have found peace. Be you man! Really enjoying the channel.
