Always There: Table Mountain and the people of District Six

Linda Fortune knows first-hand about the pain inflicted by apartheid forced removals in the 1960s. Her reflective oral life history project comprises interviews with ex-residents of District Six, and presents a litany of loss - both of community and the deep emotional bonds that she and others shared with Table Mountain.
Junaid West is one of a few young people who have subsequently moved back into the new District Six. Aware of gangsterism and drugs as a potential threat to this new community, he and his friends start to explore the history of District Six and discover the immense value that Table Mountain had for the original residents. With the mountain once again in their backyard, can the broken ties be restored to serve the District Six youth as a place of spiritual guidance and recreational value?

I grew up in South Africa in the 1980s, our history lessons never taught us about areas like District 6 and the forced removal of the locals. Everything I learned about the Group Areas Act was from my family. My grand parents also lost their home in Mayville KZN because of segregation. They had to rebuild another home away from the city. Now that I live in Australia I am yearning to learn about the history of South Africa which was never spoken about when I lived there.
As long as there's a Table Mountain, there will be a District Six.
I believe that DISTRICT SIX is going to be redeveloped by the current democratic government and those families that were removed from district six will be given priority to move back . I really hope this this is going to happen soon as this will go ahead someway to redress the past If it happens . Additionally the houses that are constructed to a high standard so that the occupants can experience a real sense of pride in their homes .🙏🏼

It's been 50 years most people have died waiting on the present government it's now the children and grandkids waiting we were offered cash or a house many many many waiting for one or the other 😅

Is all that will happen is they won’t move back. They’ll sell the land for the money.
District 6 was a slum. The buildings were falling down big time. Nobody’s moved in there since they knocked it down. Because it was dangerous to live there.

Yes the white Afrikaner rulers at the time used it as an excuse to get us out of the area they were after the mountain and sea views
