I will be writing it in my crochet reference notebook so I can easily use it in the future. I have several of your techniques and 'helps' that have made it into there. Thank you so much for investing your time in teaching us better skills. I used a similar system to copy a knitted sweater for my sister, I converted it to crochet. @@TuulaMaaria thank you for responding. I meant knitting with cotton. Using n. 3 knitting needles. When I use wool I have the same problem but it is much more accentuated and terrible with cotton. Loose stitches... Last three on both ends.
@TuulaMaaria
Ай бұрын
@@susangobin8726 Yes, cotton is harder to work with. It also depends on what way you knit. I knot continental so I keep the yarn tightly insidthe palm of my left hand when I knot and tighten it as needed. If you knit with throwing each stitch separately, it may be harder to control it so that there isn't a bit of loose yarn in between stitches. What I find helps with the edge is slipping the first stitch purlwise always.

Great formula. I’ve calculated my number of stitches etc without problem. I’m not sure if I used a formula for it. I do it in my head. I’ve always just known the answer in my head. I can look at an algebra problem and tell you the answer with in seconds BUT I fail the subject in school because I couldn’t show the teacher how I got the answer because I don’t know. LOL Anyway, this is very useful for many and you explained it very well! Thank you for sharing.

I understand you saying that you just calculate in your head! I do that in many things, like for that reason I couldn't give an answer when someone was asking about the amount of yarn. I just calculate in my head, on top of checking what others have done!

No, the final figure of how many stitches you need is what the result of the calculation is. The very first figure you put in is the width of the project. - Or maybe I misunderstood the comment!

This will definitely be useful in the near future. Thank you Tuula 😊 I'm currently working on a baby blanket. I'm using stitch markers and counting my stitches every couple of rows. The number of stitches remains at 80 for every row, but my sides are incredibly wavy - the width increases and decreases. I know it's hard to guage the problem without a photo, but could this be a tension issue? Will blocking help even the blanket out? Any advice very gratefully received 😊

Hi @openorwap5412, I would go down a hook size or two 😊
This makes perfect sense, thank you. Do you have any tips on calculating the amount of yarn needed. I seem to waste so much when I'm doing colour work, as I am not winding enough on my bobbins? Plus, I keep seeing graph patterns with no measurements on as it is your choice of yarn, hook, size etc.
@TuulaMaaria
29 күн бұрын
Great it makes sense! I don't have any exact method of calculating yarn amount. What I actually do is just go to Ravelry, find the same yarn or very similar I'm going to use, similar patterns to what I'm making and looking at many of those patterns to see how much yarn they have said it takes. I know this isn't exact at all so I also normally end up having too much yarn.

I tried to explain how I do it but I couldn’t do it. So I searched the internet and found this. It’s a little different from what I do but I think it’s understandable. Hope it helps. “Formula: (length x width x gauge) / 6 = yards needed. Length and width are in inches and gauge is in stitches per inch. The division by 6 is to convert the answer from square inches to yards.” Edited to add courtesy of Twisted Yarn Shop
@Blessed-2-b-a-Hembree
27 күн бұрын
Here’s another way. I don’t think I’m smart enough for this one. “To calculate how much yarn you need for a crochet project, you can make a large swatch in your main stitch pattern, measure and weigh it, and then use the following steps: Calculate the area of the swatch by multiplying its width by its height. Divide the weight of the swatch by its area to get grams per cm2/in2. Count the stitches in the swatch and divide the weight by that number to get Y per stitch. To calculate how much extra or less yarn you might need for a change, multiply the area change by Y. “ Courtesy of The Crochet Project
