The ending is heartbreaking and magnificently realized.

I taped this production when it was shown on the television years ago and watched it so many times that it has gone fuzzy. Altynai is the ultimate Nikiya for me and Mukhamedov was a fantastic Solor. And this production also had Anthony Dowell's marvellous acting and Darcey Bussell as a convincing Gamzatti - one of the few roles I liked her in, even though she was far too tall for Irek. Great stuff!

I adore this version which is, I think, based on Petipa's original sketches for the ending. It is the ballet which hooked me in when I saw ABT doing it on tour in the early 80. This final scene never fails to move me.

Mesmerizing and Beautiful!!💝Altynai, Mukhavmedov and Darcey are just perfection....😀They breathe and dance the role and it's emotional how Solor and Nikiya reunite in heaven!!💞😇

@krazy77grl I think it depends of the version. In the Nureyev version she dies, then Solor dances with her in the hallucination and the ballet ends there. But in this Makarova's version Solor wakes up from his Hallucination and have to marry Gamzatti. But the spirit of Nikiya appears and... well we have this finale

@@garotadagavea This scene is one of my favourite. Solor do not wake up from hallucination, he's partially still in it and partially in reality. It show this fantastic pas-de-trois when he dances with both girls. And another scene of terrified Gamzatti trying to escape from a woman who gives her a basket ... Asylmuratova is very good choice for dancing Nikiya - she's perfect technically as most Russian ballerinas and at the same time she has this incredible ability of emotional performance, typical for Asian ballerinas. If I had to choose from currently active ballerinas, then Ebihara is the closest to the ideal performer of the role of Nikiya

Although it was the original libretto, it was cut at some stage. Researching the archives may seem noble but it is not always valuable. This detracts from the main drama and, in my view, adds nothing. I'm not surprised it was cut back in the day.

Of course she comes back. She has died, but she is a shade (ghost), She of course reunites with Solor in heaven, and the bad guys are destroyed.

@pediatrapaola I didn't see him when he was with the RB a few years ago, but he isn't here now - don't know where he went.

This may have been the original idea but it was cut, as so often happens in the theatre, and for good reason. I feel it completely flattens the drama. I much prefer it when it ends with the final PDD and the shades.

I don't understand this... I thought Nikiya dies when she is bitten by the snake and doesn't drink the antidote. She then dances with Solor in his hallucination. She comes back to life in the end and the temple crashes? I'm confused! LOL

krazygrl77 in Solor's hallucination, he is in the kingdom of the shades. He is reunited with her ghost. Then, in this scene, she is merely a hallucination because Solor is unsure of marrying Gamzatti, and remembers his vision of Nikiya. The gods, are angered that Solor married another, though he swore eternal love to Nikiya in Act 1 Scene 1. The vengeance of the gods is unleashed, and the temple and all its celebrants are destroyed. At the very end, you can see Nikiya's ghost leading Solor "towards the light" . They once again, are united in eternal love.

@Pearlaceous great pity louise failed the alliance hink an h.them more pencil of doom surely had won the war and surely destroied the hate feg.

Watch the Svetlana Z andRoberto Bolle version infinitely superior! Svetlana takes technique and beauty to new heights .No doubt these dancers top of their game in their time are good but Altynai looks so mechanical none of the passion and emotion of Svetlana ,who emotes so well she has raised the bar so high in all her roles in every way it's difficult to watch anyone else and Maria Alexandrova is the best Gamzatti! To watch Svetlana and Maria together in this ballet is such a joy! Everyone else seems insipid.

If someone is known for being an amazing technician robot is Zakharova!!! Altynai in her worsts moments is much expressive than her, even Darcey, who is just a diva. Yes, Svetlana has great flexibility and technique and her lines are beautiful, but she is not even close to Assylmuratova grace. Everyone seems insipid to you maybe, others don't lift the leg so high, you mean.

I am pretty sure anyone who has seen this Bussell / Altynai has seen Svetlana . I love (LOVE) Maria Alexandrova , she is my favorite Russian ballerina , however Gamzati role is done exquisitely by many including Nunez and Darcy !

Nikiya took Solor with her in vain. Because, the fact that he is a womanizer is only half the trouble, it's a complete disaster that he is moron
