Alternator Replacement on 2006 Ford F-150 (5.4L V8 Engine) Easy and Simple Repair

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Changing or replacing the alternator on this 2006 Ford F-150 is very simple and easy to do.
This Ford has the 5.4l V8 engine and thankfully the alternator is located in-front of the engine.
You'll need a wrench, extensions and a 10mm socket so good luck.
When your car or pickup dies while driving then the alternator is usually the main cause.
Learning how to do the job is simple for this pickup.

    great video. thank you very much. made it easy for me to get the job done. if there are any ladies out there, i (a 5'4" not strong lady) was able to change my alternator in an afternoon. not as fast as a guy would have done but saved a lot of money and time -- the mechanic would have taken 2 weeks to get to it. since i'm short i had to perch on top of the engine like a bird for a lot of it. and i had to use a cheater bar to be strong enough to loosen the fan belt. but i also got the throttle body cleaned while i had that accessed. this video gave the confidence to do it.

    Thank you so much for pointing out you are a lady. My alternator is bad and I was looking for videos to see if I could replace it myself. Both the video and your comment gives me the confidence to rise to the challenge. Can I ask where you ended up purchasing the alternator? Did you have to buy a brand new battery as well? Thank you again.

    @@steffany6233 i bought my alternator from napa. they were able to test my old one to confirm it truly was bad. and the guys working at my napa store are really nice and helpful plus they have a dog in the store, too. i did not need to buy a new battery.

    Additionally, the serpentine tensioner is designed to be actuated using a 3/8" ratchet or breaker bar and not a 3/8" socket. For me, I needed the longer 3/8" ratchet breaker bar. Think of the serpentine belt tension pulley as a giant 3/8" drive socket.

    Well if you were able to get it off then the same should be when reinstalling it again. Just have to have the belt properly set and pull that tensioner hard.

    Rust sucks but try PB blaster and tighten the vice grip really hard. If you head the bolts a bit the shock should loosen some rust in the treads of the rusty bolts

    Two things, my belt tensioner was 1/2 inch not 3/8s, and I am looking at electric wire clip on the alternator, trying to figure out how to unplug it. what did you do to get it unplugged? thanks.

  • @paulyannucci7079

    @paulyannucci7079

    I figured out. You have slide a small screwdriver on top of the plug under the alternator socket to release the tab.

    I wish this video was for a 2007 XLT 5.4 liter - it was helpful but the fan cowling on the 2007 covers the top frame member to the front side of the upper radiator hose and was a complete pain to deal with.

  • @CheralRallock

    I thought the removal of the back connector was glossed over. I ended up using a flat-blade screw driver bit pushed into the connector lock to be able to get the connector out of the alternator.

    How do you know how tight to make the belt after reattaching everything??

  • @secondhandspeed

    @secondhandspeed

    Ай бұрын

    The belt tensioner Is what puts pressure on the serpentine belt. You really don't have to worry about how tight the belts gets since its spring loaded inside. When the belt tensioner is going bad it will move a lot and make lots of noise.

  • @secondhandspeed

    @secondhandspeed

    I did it myself. It’s a tight fit since the pulley tensioner is tough. I would realign everything again and put the belt on the alternator last.

    Yes, that was the hardest part of the whole job, loosening the tension on the belt! Especially when putting it back on. There isn’t very much room to work. But I got it. I used a long cheater pipe over the wrench. I don’t think I could have done without it.
