Alternatives to power regenerators

Power conditioners more often than not rob music of its life, bleaching the sound just a little. Power regenerators do the opposite and improve sound, yet they can be prohibitively expensive. What's a good alternative to a regenerator for someone on a budget? Have a question you want to ask Paul? www.psaudio.com/ask-paul/
I have finished my memoir! You can go read it now: www.amazon.com/gp/product/173... It's called 99% True and it is chock full of adventures, debauchery, struggles, heartwarming stories, triumphs and failures, great belly laughs, and a peek inside the high-end audio industry you've never known before.
I plan a few surprises for early adopters, so go to www.paulmcgowan.com and add your name to the list of interested readers. There's an entire gallery of never before seen photos too.

@@mastershredder2002 No, he isn't. Paul is a very honorable guy, and invented a few top-quality components: the Genesis Digital Lens (probably long before you were aware of The High End). That was back in 1996. I owned one. A pretty spectacular unit. And some pretty highly-respected audio engineers champion the Power Plant, but again, I'm guessing, BYT ( (before your time). There are so many people who are new to High End and don't understand much, because they've only come into it in the past 15 years or so, when the Internet is full of opinions by people who've never owned these things (I have had 3 Power Plants of different power vintages, as well as some other top line conditioners, but this dates back to 1994, so I've got 26 years of experience with these things). AND, they don't realize that most High End components were built to reveal the accuracy of ACOUSTIC instruments, not multi-track, over-produced and amplified pop/rock recordings, which almost never sound real on disc (not since 1978, anyway. There are a few exceptions, of course.) And vinyl will reproduce music recorded before 1982 far bettter than digital (because most of the recordings were done in the analog domain up until then), but by the mid to late '80s? A big portion of recordings were made digitally, even though it was a highly flawed, immature technology, so there's that to consider, too. Just like early SLR digital cameras could match a cheap $500 analogue camera, so, too, $5000 digital converters did not sound as close to real instruments as a $500 turntable (provided you knew anything about setting up a turntable correctly. (Which even audiophiles had trouble with.) Anyway, Paul's a distinctly knowledgeable - and honorable - man. If you want a "salesperson," you would have said Mike Kay (no longer alive) of Lyric Hi Fi. His story was THE audio store in the country. Unfortunately, he was also the kind of person who encouraged designers to sell their product for 2-3 times the price, because he was of the mind that "audiophiles only think it's good if it's expensive." HE was a "saleseperson." (With excellent ears.) Not Paul. This is what happens when youngsters speculate about things they actually KNOW very little about. Oh, disclosure: I was once in the business, so I know a bit more than most. But that was back in 1984 and from how you phrased your response, I'm thinking you weren't even around then. Or were very, very young. A suggestion: Listen to something before you speculate. You'd never have said that if you knew Paul.

I need to try a power regenerator once again, the P5 I audition sounded way to soft, reminded me of the ps audio directstream. Maybe that's PS Audios signature, or it might be other factors at hand. Best practice when it comes to power are to alter it (no filter and similar things) as little as possible, and really good use unshielded power cables and perhaps some grounding boxes.Thats my experience so far. More testings needs to be done.

That would make more sense to me giving Florida's temperamental weather conditions - still though, "all the time" sounds like you have a power company of questionable quality more than anything else.

I have power amp in the wall and TT, phono Pre, Mac mini, tv, Roku plugged into an old Panamax. The Panamax has two plugs that occupy the nearest outlet. What’s best way to get more outlets other than a dectet or the like? Ideally I’d install two dedicated lines but I rent and (1) don’t really know what I’m doing and (2) don’t wanna spend 1k+ on an electrician and wiring for a rental. Noise/hum is a slight problem in my system however.

I have a very good alternative to a power regenerator. It is clear that this device is just a power supply that takes the mains voltage from the wall, converts it back to DC and then back again to AC. You can do that with a DC power supply and a pure sinewave inverter! Just make sure you buy quality stuff I can recommend Meanwell. It will cost a pretty penny but it would still be much cheaper than any commercially available "regenerators" out there and it works a treat! Surely a powerplant is a much more elegant and quiet solution with probably better filtering but if you can place them somewhere you don't hear them (they are loud) and route the power cable to the room in which your sound system is you're golden!

Supra at jenving.com have some power products that both has some limited DC filtering, but have only positive effects on power amplifiers. It is fairly cheap too compared to other power products. I have one now, and I have now more dynamics and less noise from my system. I just tried it out of curiosity but was very pleasantly surprised by the amount of positive effects it had on the sound. I bought the MD07DC mains block for the EU connector. It has DC filter on all outputs, and additional filtering for the last five outputs. It was 600 dollars well spent. I don't have the money for power plant or similar for a very long time. I want to upgrade my components first. Then further down the road I might invest in power plant or something similar, but not now.

I too found Paul’s answers to be somewhat opaque. I’ve long tried to sort out the power supply conundrum. Currently (no pun intended) I’ve got an APC battery backup.surge protector feeding a Dectet. My hope is that, because of the APC, the not infrequent power outs and ins in my area will not fry my audio equipment, and that the Dectet will straighten everything out before it gets to my equipment. I set up this system about a year ago and to tell you the truth, i noticed an instant change in SQ - and not for the better. I’ve taken the APC out of the chain without any seeming change in SQ. I’ve got to mess around a bit more because I worry that my worrying has introduced too much mucking about and thus degradation in power supply. I guess that I just don’t really know what to do.

Anyone who thinks that plugging directly into the wall without any type of protection from spikes and surges is a fool. Your entire electrical system comes from those wires outside where mother nature does all sorts of nasty stuff. I've had surge suppressors on my stuff here for almost 30 years and never had a problem. UNTIL about a month ago a nasty storm rolled through FAST. The tv (entertainment center) was on and we had a few brownouts. Then there was a weird glow and a huge spike came down the lines and out went the lights and everything. A few seconds later, the lights came back on, but the tv wouldn't. Nothing in the entertainment center would power up. The two surge suppressors that supplied power to everything there had sacrificed themselves, as designed, to save the electronics downstream. So 27 + - years of "clean enough" wall power and "no need for surge suppressors" ended and the $20 -$30 I spent WAY BACK THEN finally paid off. Go ahead, roll that dice. Everyone will eventually lose. It just may take a very long time. Hmm, sacrifice $20 - $50 or blow up 10's of 1000's of dollars. I know where my insurance $ goes. Hey Paul, do you pay for car insurance? You may never need it, but if someone else crashes into you, I'll bet you'll be contacting the insurance co. Hmmm?

Power amps should not be put on any conditioner or regenerator. The best power source for a power amp is the raw wall power. Any surge that can damage a power amp can likely damage a re-generator as well. After all a re-generator is nothing more than an audio power amp it's self. Now source gear such as DACs, preamps, servers, can benefit from some power filtering. But fortunately you can get these surge protectors and filtered power strips cheap at any home center. That's all you need. If you have data protection concerns, then a small basic UPS unit works well.

that product is not made for audio equipment in particular and there is no guaranty that it can come near a audio oriented power plant or similar. Audio power plants must be able to deliver 40 to 100 Amps of peak power to handle the demand of power amplifiers to be able to be "invisible" for the power amplifier, or else the peaks in the amplifications will suffer and you will lose dynamics in the playback. You could test it for audio, but if it is not tested for it in particular, then I would not recommend it before I had tested its qualities. edit: Side note: Since it cleans the power, the sound will have less noise, but at the risk of loosing dynamics. But you should be able to test that by checking if you have more dynamics directly from the wall.

Line interactive UPSs are OK for desktop PCs but with up to 40 percent THD I wouldn't recommend one for a high end audio system. If you want spike or surge protection I bought an Intermatic protector for my circuit breaker panel that protects my entire house at Home Depot for 27 dollars and a 2 pole 15 amp circuit breaker for a few dollars more. If you aren't comfortable working on your homes electrical system have an electrician install it. It only takes about 5 or 10 minutes.

Why won’t any of these manufacturers conduct a real AB test to put such things to rest once and for all. All I use is a simple line conditioner cum surge protector that costs a mere $150. Got it more for the surge correction. It’s also been tested from the mains with an ENTECH wideband powerline noise analyzer. PS Audio ~ You must understand that 110 volt supplies have to handle twice the current for a given wattage rating of the appliance...ok ? Now current is the devil here ... the more current that's used equates to voltage drops and poor power factor and noise and spikes produced by online switching of reactive loads ... 245 volt systems are by far the best ( only if it's supplied in accordance with the regulations ( India for example has a very ad hoc system .. whereas the UK and Australia are by far much better and don't have power failures ) I'd go so far as to suggest Power regenerators are a must in 3rd world countries running on 110 vac ! For my house .. which is on 245vac all I've done is to have a 35 Amp cable run from the meters to the main wall socket ( also 35 A ) and the supply gives no problems at all.

@Douglas Blake Except that the voltage drop is less of a problem. Also in high density data centers. There was a proposal just a few years ago to offer a 415vac option on commercial data center gear. (obviously a European idea at 415vac) They even proposed a new IEC connector with slanted rather than straight prongs. Not sure if this idea died or is still being pursued.

@Douglas Blake Well we had 440v I think before the 1960s, then it went to 460v, and now it's 480v since about 1980 IIRC. Just like 110, 115, 117, and 120v. European standard voltages are a bit different above 220-240v.

@Douglas Blake Density. One 415v 6 foot power strip has the same capacity as four 120v strips. Also the numbers of branch circuits is decreased. Obviously only an advantage in large technical centers. Also note that most larger switch mode power supplies already operate at 380v. They use a doubler rectifier circuit at 120v and a direct rectifier at 240v. Not much cost and effort to push that to 500v. Obviously this proposal has not gone anywhere yet and won't very fast as we are talking about a new world distribution standard. But it is an interesting concept.

Seems like Torus products were conveniently avoided? Come on - they make killer products suitable for beastly amps. I get it that this is a PS Audio channel but that just seemed silly to pretend they don’t exist.

Or it might not. Check out this video, even on KZread the differences can easily be heard. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lJuqmql7ZMLcXcY.html That being said, the effect at home with less polluted mains most like won't be as dramatic.
