Alternative Paths to Manga
English, French and Portuguese (BR) subtitles are available under the "CC" menu.
Yuriko Akase and Junichiro Saito are two manga artists whose alternative styles go against some of manga’s set rules.
We spent a day with each one of them to learn more about their motivations, their inspirations and how they place themselves in the industry.
From full watercolor to hard-boiled noir, discover the authors and some of their key works: Sazan & Comet Girl and Shit Chofu.
Thanks to SubTube for the Portuguese subtitles!

I love Saito's mindset so much. Thinking that failing to reproduce is your style - that even if you can't draw what's exactly in your head, it's part of that flow to the story and belongs in it. It's so creatively liberating and what I needed to hear. Thanks for the marvelous work everyone at Archipel. Absolutely gonna check out both of their works.

It's nice that--even with all the requests for more known or established artists to be covered--that you still resolve to seeking out these surprise corners of the art world that we didn't know we wanted to discover until you gracefully revealed them to us.

Thanks for Documentaries, I was lived in Sendai and Tokushima for 7 years from age 1-7. I watched Ghibli and go to Disney Land since my child hood and now I moved to Indonesia. I never do drawing or animation before, until I decide to leave my corporation work and do what I never do before as my child hood dreams. It's not easy but not late to do. I enjoyed all progress I do from 2021 until now. All this channel documentaries video give me more Inspire to do drawing and animation better than yesterday. I'm not alone, masterpice created by lot of fails and tears until that skills and works become Master.
Akase's work is fantastic, Jean Giraud would be proud. So beautiful
I really hope they make it! Enough of publishers trying to impose what its the standard and what is not
This was by far an inspiration of 2 avant garde artist that's out the norm and I'm so glad this was put out, I've been waiting on this for quite awhile and I'm super grateful that this is finally out, much love from New York ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I like Saito's horror/misery style. Akase, I think is her name, also has a very beautiful story telling style and very colorful! Also, the editor is very attractive 😝! I thought he was a creator too at first.
I bought Sazan and Comet Girl last year and enjoyed how it made me feel like I was watching a movie. It's so great to learn more about the artist and her process! Also, I really wish they printed Sazan and Comet Girl on larger paper. Those pages Yuriko Akase showed in this video are incredibly beautiful and the small format doesn't do them justice. Perhaps they will do so in the future. Awesome video!
I just bought Sazan and Comet Girl last month! I'm really looking forward to reading it now

@@ArchipelDocumentaries thank you for these documentaries Will you cover ryūkishi (creator of when they cry) in future?
hand drawn. every. single. panel. god i love artists
I believe that he doesn't make manga anymore, but I desperately wish there was a video like this on Hitoshi Ashinano. His method of storytelling is blissful and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou chnaged my life. Sadly, like most manga artist, there is precious little to be found on him. Even less for someone who can only read English.

So good I am speechless! You really blew it out of the park with this documentary. I love Torch, the artists are free to pursue manga in their own way instead of conforming to the norm. And it makes me think, why conform to the norm? Imagine if more manga had vastly different art styles. And the works of both authors depicted in this documentary look amazing. I want to read them both!!!

Exactly
It is clear that Junichiro's work would be very appreciated for a western audience since his style and story elements feels and acts like a comic or adult animation. I think Yuriko underestimate his own work and has a inferiority complex, his draws and use of color is really good, at the same level of a animated movie, atleast we have never seen something like this at this level (in a sense of using full watercolor to tell a manga story) in Japan that isn't anime or a storyboard. I don't if is possible, but it would be incredible if they can read one of our comments, because the west is also aware of them, Yuriko and Junichiro.
Finalmente! Estive super-ansioso para ver um novo documentário de vocês!
Espero que possam legendar para o português! Adoro o trabalho de vocês!

It's almost always fascinating the desire to not create the "standard" results in creating in the "standard". In a way, the desire to not be seen as part of a structure, comes from the fear of not being understood, which comes from a desire for attention, to communicate with another, which is the spirit of art. Which is also a structure, but that's not a bad thing. It is the visual equivalent of saying "I have something to say".
