I use the Aruba Instant On range, similar setup with me need to have a controller which helps massively. The good thing with them is that it is based on the enterprise Aruba Networks kit, just a lower cost version so the support is really good and price is similar to the Ubiquiti’s of the world

for speed limiting - is that a cap on the entire connection? i.e. if 5 devices are connected with the same password, and I set that passwords connection speed to 20 down / 2 up - then all devices connecting with the same password have to split that 20/2 connection ? OR does it give each device connected with that pw a 20/2 connection per device, and 5 devices would end up using up to a total of 100 down / 10 up ?

unifi doesn't need a controller in it's stand alone mode. The controller you can use a raspberry pi or if you already have a server you can run the controller off of that. Yes these controllers would probably cost something but either not that much or it's on something that you're already running.

Have your unifi speed tests been conducted via a Unifi controller that doesnt have security throttling enabled, like IPS, which would throttles your WAN speed? Failing that the devices do seem a good way to bypass a few hundred pounds on a controller if someone else offers it as part of the price.

The feature is also the opposite of a benefit if you can't split the SSIDs into separate networks the same as Unifi.
