Alt-Azimuth vs. Equatorial Telescope Mounts

Today we present you a video
about the difference and the use of azimuthal and equatorial mounts.
As always, the video contains subtitles, selectable in all available languages.
Basically, among all mounts you will find only two principles of operation, namely equatorial and azimuthal.
An azimuthal mount works like a photo tripod.
The telescope can be rotated in a circle parallel to the horizon and tilted up and down. This means that any point in the sky can be reached.
The equatorial mount can now be thought of as an extension of the azimuthal mount in that it is tilted so that one axis points to Polaris. By rotating around this one axis, the telescope follows exactly the movement of the stars during the course of the night. That is why the axis is tilted. So you don't need to move two axes to follow a star as you do with azimuthal mounts.

I use a Manfrotto Nitrotech 612 for my Astro-Tech 125EDL refractor. Nice and smooth.

Thanks very much. Regarding your very last point in the video, given that you are a shop with a fairly advanced amount of options for astronomy, you should cover advanced stuff too, not just the basics. There's plenty of info regarding the basics on the internet, but much less info regarding the advanced, precision stuff. I would love to see a video tackling precision tracking with eq mounts at 100x+ magnification, both manually-driven and motor-driven, especially for visual use. Great job with these videos either way!

Hi Ed, thanks for the feedback ! You are right and we are working on this already. 🙂 The basics are also important for the beginners and that`s why we started with the easy things and go into the advanced stuff step by step 🙂

How long do the batteries last with the SkyWatcher AZ GTiX? Great presentation, by the way, thanks!

Thank you very much! The lifetime depends on how good the batteries are (and of course the capacity). When slewing often, it will reduce the lifetime significantly. But under "normal" operation i think 15 hrs. should be possible. High quality rechargeable batteries are recommend. Cheers
