Alpine A110 GT | Review | Can it compete with Porsche, Lotus and everyone else?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Legende GT is supposed to be the best A110 yet. As fast as the S, and as soft and playful as the standard A110. With a clear focus on lightweight and driving enjoyment, does it stand out enough to win the hearts from the Porsche enthusiast, or from Lotus fanatics?

Thanks for the review, yes it’s a great spec! I have owned my A110 for almost a year - what a drive! And here in Australia there were only ever 110 imported, so a rare sight here.

The Porsche is not faster for that money. Its suspension is stiffer and appeals to a different type of driver. The Alpine glides over roads, is more interactive, far more economical & to my eyes, more visually interesting both outside and inside. Yes the Cayman is more practical but costs more in servicing, fuel, tyres and smiles per dollar. It's also true that you can get a manual Cayman but try to find one at a showroom. Its only a tiny percentage that take that option. These cars are really about putting a massive grin on your face & if I were to have the money, I would go for the Alpinwe every time.

This version is a limited run of 300 called the Legendé GT, but when referring to the spec of the car is talking about the normal GT. The normal GT is more powerful than the Legendé GT. Other than that, good video.

You say the GT suspension is too stiff for highway and city but the video description says it's as soft as the standard A110. I've only driven the A110 once but it felt pretty comfortable everywhere, the Life110 springs were too stiff though.

British people in the main are badge snobs, so they buy German cars, full stop. The Alpine is better than the Porsche Cayman in so many ways, but people want to impress their non-car fan friends with a badge that they'll be cognizant with, i.e. Porsche. I don't quite understand your criticism of the interior. The volume controls from the Renault parts bin isn't an issue, as putting those controls where you can still put hand pressure on the steering wheel is good design, plus they are discreet in their location. If the controls are on the wheel you take hand pressure off of the steering wheel and thus aren't in control of the steering. I thought the heating controls are well-thought out, not cluttered with text and complexity of operation, and are very attractive and so am wondering what you were unhappy with? Other than that I enjoyed your review & observations. I have a Premiere Edition but would like to try out an 'S'

Theyre more open minded than other markets though. UK buys the most sports cars in EU due to lower taxation.

TheA110GT suspension has to be a compromise between the standard and the S because of the increased power and performances. The only way to avoid this would've been to use electronically controlled suspensions or revive the Citroën Activa system. Both would shatter the original philosophy of the A110 and their cost would probably be too high. BTW, the idea of a GT has evolved : 50 years ago it was about to make a 1000km trip on the highway at indecent speeds without being tired with the noise or the lack of confort, but today it's mostly being able to also travel and enjoy the small roads while preserving a proper level of comfort in addition to not get too noisy at 130 kph on highways, with the notable exception of autobahns, tho. Alpine's main market is France and cars like V6 Porsche and Lotus are very heavily penalized there because of gas emissions taxes. The A110 tax for any A110 model is 1500€. The 718 GTS has a 40.000 € environmental tax, so it's almost two times as the A110GT on the French market. Lotus Emira will sold for 150.000€ next year. Even the 718 Cayman 2.0 has a 19.000€ tax, so it can't compete with the basic A110 except for die hard and fortunate French Porsche fans. Due to Renault's current financial hardship and even if they could borrow the new Nissan Z Coupé V6 engine, the development costs and the fact it virtually won't sell in France, Alpine will never propose a V6 car for markets that don't buy the regular version in the first place. Porsche and Lotus situation is very different : Porsche already has a lineup of different engines and they are the most profitable car manufacturer in the world, Lotus has to diversify their lineup and aim at higher end markets that can get them more revenue.

Thank you for your input! Here are my two cents on some of your comments. Why would a car manufacturer only focus on one country to sell their car/cars? Seems doomed from the start, and fairly counter intuitive. In Sweden, the taxes are not as extreme. It seems that Alpine is also going for the higher end markets with its price. Off course lightness and all that costs. How well does the Porsche 718 (GTS 4.0) sell in France, and other markets for that matter? Yes, the price with taxes might be higher, but as you wrote "they are the most profitable car manufacturer in the world", and there are people that buys it. The Lotus Emira has both a V6 and the turbocharged 4. I just get the feeling that Alpine painted themselves in a corner with its philosophy. Admirable from almost every standpoint, but if it doesn't sell... I would just love for there to be a new model that is the new A110, or a bigger one with more room to play with engineering wise

@@HonestCarReviews Well, your argument could have some legs to stand on if Nissan didn't disproved it by not selling their new 400Z in Europe due to prohibitive CO2 tax.

@@chucku00 "... in Europe due to prohibitive CO2 tax." Which CO2 tax? There is no standardized Co2 tax in Europe. Thank god all countries handle this planned economy bullshit by themself... But for manufactures is a planned economy fleet consumption target of cars you sell in the EU which penalized light cars an benefits heavy cars. If you sell more heavy cars you can have a higher fleet consumption. If the fleet consumption is too high the manufacturer has to pay a penalty tax for each car they sold in a timeframe. With the GT-R you can compensate it because it is a high priced car. For the new Z you first have to homologate the car for a high amount of money and have to put afford for the new planned economy emissions standard. Euro 7 is coming mid 2025 and will hard to archive with the V6 and without a hybrid solution or a new regularity for (CO2 neutral) synthetic fuels.(Which will come in the future...) So it would be very expensive to homologate the car for just a year or two to sell but they will sell not that much cars and not for a price which would be high enough. So no business case in Europe today. The Lotus V6 compressor or the very light and small Audi R5 turbo like in the Donkervoort or the new KTM GT-XR would be a nice addition for the A110. Or maybe a more radical version with a R3 turbo. Also interesting is the hybrid AWD version of TechnoMAP of the A110 (HE2HP) but of course not that light but still under 1,3 t... Too bad I just find videos in French for that car...

@@MrQmie You're right : I should have written "Due to prohibitive CO2 sales and registration taxes in many European countries..." "Too bad I just find videos in French for that car..." That's because Alpine's main market is France, where the entry level Porsche 718 Caiman is sold at the same price than the entry level A110 (65K€) but the French CO2 tax on the Porsche should be around 40K€ but limited to half its sales price (33K€). So The total cost of the 718 in France is around 100K€. The Lotus V6 compressor (derived from a 3.5L Toyota engine) also has a CO2 tax of 40K€ in France, the Audi 5cyl 2.5L turbo engine has a way lower tax (around 4K€) but both of these engines can't be installed in the A110 without heavy modifications of the car chassis because they're still way too big to fit in. So it's the exact same problem than using the Nissan Z engine. Not to mention the Euro 7 next emission standard.

Having literally come out of one not even an hour ago from a test drive... I cant help but feel like the breaks, wheels and tires on this car are out of proportion and out of touch with what it really should be. I cant help but feel that 2 inch smaller wheels with more sidewall to the tires and reworked breaks would make it even better. But that's just me probably. Also I'm definitely still considering buying one, bur I'm loathed to spend the half year it'd take me to unfuck the suspension to the way I'd want it. As is the front just feels off to me. It's odd, like it doesn't really behave how I expect an MR car to.
