Alpha & Omega - Pure Metal Coders

Ойын-сауық

"Alpha & Omega" Amiga demo by Norwegian group Pure Metal Coders. Released on July 1991 at Amega 1991 party where it ranked 2nd. First demo I watched back in the day. Wonderful tune by Peter Salomonsen and smart code by Cocy (Eivind Rovik) & Vanguard (Frank Stevenson).

Peter Salomonsen's personal page seems the most reliable source of links both on his great music (keep it up Peter!) and on the PMC - so check it here:
The other members of PMC also have web pages, although they seem to be down for the moment - I'll update the links once I get them.

I remember the setting where I watched it the first time perfectly. Curious how some things are stuck on you.

I remember coming home from the Amiga Format Show at Earls court and this was one of the demos I got from there along with Elite Frontier

What a game Elite Frontier was... Really felt like the possibilities were endless!

Animated raytraced scenes combined with fractal surfaces were popular in 1991 ;D. Another example would be from "Enigma" by Phenomena released the same year :).

Probably has to do with the fact that rays and fractals were otherwise very rare in games. I can tell you I stood amazed watching this back in the day.

@@clafey Oh, for sure! Back then the demo scene elite was light years ahead of what you would see in games. I thought it looked pretty amazing too :). Funny to think that we actually have real-time path tracing nowadays, though, so no need for animations :).

WOOW! That's killer music, almost in the league of Blaizer / TSL !! (did Pinball Dreams too, so you have an idea about the level that Peter is about to reach!)

I made an attempt to play the first part of the tune on my piano - Piano in the dark - Alpha Omega (Garbage collection) - hope it doesn't ruin the experience :-) cheers, Peter

Late night listening to Nectarine, Garbage collection comes on, check the comments, see your Piano rendition, watch it, get emotional, comment on it, come and check my Alpha & Omega video, , a two year old comment approval request from none other than you... Sorry Peter - all sorted out now!

@@clafey Thanks! There should be more focus by developers in these days on saving resources both short- and long term tbh.

Animated. That is, not real-time. Although, TBL released the demo "Rift" in 2014 where they showed off real-time pathtracing (rendering a 3D fractal landscape) on a 060 Amiga 1200 running at... what... 10 fps? See: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iWmTsK-xh5i7lqg.html (at 1:41) . So it's possible to do stuff like that. Just not on an Amiga 500 back in 1991 ;D.

The 3D intro was obviously inspired by the 1989 CNN logo animation: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qY18zMaig9Oof7Q.html
