Alpha Labs - Your coaxial cable might increase the jitter!

Ғылым және технология

We went into the Alpha Lab again! This time to measure some coaxial cables. Because... well... yes; there is a difference. Some cables just mess up your digital signal, without you even knowing it. We show you how we measure digital cables.

Getting a 1.5m Audioquest carbon coax cable was quite a revelation, compared to the no name “coax” cable I was already using. In terms of calmness, fullness of timbre and absense of haze and glare.

What's the conclusion? A coaxial cable should be... coaxial (and shielded)?

Since so many digital transports have RCA SPDIF but not BNC or AES/EBU, it would be interesting to see what happens to these measurements for cables with BNC>RCA adapters, though I guess on your testing rig it would end up being BNC>RCA>BNC adapter. Then there are cables claiming to use 75Ohm RCA plugs like reasonably priced Canare plugs, and other branded cables with 75 Ohm cables and unspecified impedance RCA plugs. Your one RCA example here was with a brand seemingly not known or findable here. Keep up the good work with connecting the dots between listening & measurements. So few do.

Interesting but there must be other important measurements that can vary even in 2 properly shielded coaxial cables as one of the biggest differences I heard when I was previously using such a cable was between different levels of Nordost cables I was able to audition at the time. Fortunately for my system at that time I preferred the cheaper Blue Heaven because Nordost pricing is nose bleed inducing!

There are WAY more things to investigate. This is the 'quick and dirty' method to see if the cable is technically ok.

The shielding of a cable I think is better to be explained. For power Ac cable, for rca, for xlr. Usb and i2s. Many thanks I use in the past neotech furutech and now just mogami and canare. It is a different sound but is the sound that i like. The problem is that i didn’t use shielding in Ac and the xlr is not grounded separately

I dont believe people claiming they can hear difference in quality by different cables, with blind testing those people always fail. The placebo effect is a big trap people are not enough aware of. Also measuring a digital cable thats worse doesnt mean its data tranfer is corrupted, only that would become something you can hear.

  • @BrentLeVasseur

You can hear the difference, however in most cases, people’s room acoustics get in the way. 50% of the sound you hear coming out of your speakers are room reflections. Once you get your room dialed in perfectly, it makes the smaller differences like cables more audible.

@@TheAlphaAudio Im no expert, but if jitter in a signal means also jitter in the audio itself, the digital protocol is flawed I would say. If this jitter is in the audio, a blind test to see if we can even hear this jitter is important to show the actual relevance.

I believe if people in a blind test were given long enough time, even days, to adjust to a certain sound quality, they would notice the slightest change brought by changes in the set up. It takes a while to even find out wherein differences lie..

Which respectable DAC is sensitive to SPDIF jitter??? Why is this even a topic with properly designed DACs? This cable is transferring data and on the receiving end (DAC) you run a buffer of enough PCM samples to decouple any jitter from the DAC's own clock. If you have a DAC sensitive to SPDIF jitter, you better throw it out. You DAC has its own clock and it can easily clock the PCM samples through at its own control with adequate buffering. This video is making a topic out of a non-topic.
