I know this is late as its 2019 now but my lgs wont sell sealed product at all anymore. just boosters and other "loose" MTG stuff no boxes of anything. I know they are cracking the sealed stuff to restock their loose single cards and using the junk for in-store play and the occasional freebie Not to mention I get sealed product cheaper anyway from Amazon, StarCity and the like. Just posted to show that Rudy is once again correct in his portents.

Also, as you've stated "Time is the most valuable asset", make sure you take time to enjoy yourself, it sounds like 15 hour days might not be necessary, don't let that "addictive personality" fog your priorities. I don't play magic, I'm not remotely business-minded, but I find your videos really enjoyable to watch. You're a natural entrepreneur and yet you have a great sense of humour and you're also not an arrogant douche. Your channel is quite fascinating to watch. :)

I appreciate your honesty and outlook on things. I know nothing about running a business but this is really interesting to me.

Also note to the Public: Local Game Store's will not die, if THEY Don't want to. All they have to do is be a Patron to Rudy, and make him their distributor. I own a game store with a good Force of Will community and I just wanted to know if this will affect me.

Honestly, I'm just excited to see Force of Will, again. I loved that game, and I've been low-key buying bulk & collections from Craigslist for the past year, because I wanted an ample collection of what I thought was a dead game.

It just depends on where you are. It was dead here in Cleveland. We revived it a few months ago and now our LGS sells sealed and singles and we are holding a pre release for the new cluster coming out next week.

Rudy, I don't think you have enough boosters. please strengthen your position.

The more I listen to Rudy, the more I feel like he is preparing for becoming one of the few sources to buy mtg and other tags. If he undercuts and Hasbro gaming undercuts the local game stores, they will simply go out of business or no longer carry that product. Less competition, more market control, and either dropped prices because people can't get rid of their cards, or it will go up more. But this is a huge gamble. Less accessible card shops, also equates to lower player count. Lower demand will drop prices. Is Rudy working together with Hasbro to crash the whole genre? Lol. Just my thoughts...

"aren't wotc?" - why would they be? They have digital products to push. Card stock, printing, packaging and distributing is all cut as a cost of doing business when you move to digital platform. How profitable was the WoW TCG versus Hearthstone? Everyone today carries a phone or tablet capable of running a CCG. There's no need for physical cards in today's world.

No. Rudy has carefully engineered the situation to get us to where we are now: where MTG is an investment first, and a game second. If MTG is looked at primarily as an investment, the game dying will not hurt MTG much at all.

If nobody plays the game there is no value in the cards. Prices of scarce cards only increase if there is growth in demand. No new generations of players = the end of that demand growth. Rudy's new idea is very short-sighted from a business perspective. Where will new buyers come from if the offline games die? He's hoarding the supply and creating a situation where there will be no one to sell it to once he has it all.

atreidestw yep it does because MTG is more than paper. Everybody is able to play MTG arena on his phone, but you will never have such experience like in LGS. And I think some people misunderstand that, I do think most of player pay for that experience, that feeling. If they kill it, why should ppl care about their video games when tons of videos games are just better.

It's not his fault that WoTC is leaving the LGS' high and dry though. He's just taking advantage of the evolution of the market. MTG is just one game, it's not his fault that LGS' are all in on it.

Keep mercy killing the local game stores! I havent had the chance to become a Patreon yet but, I will today. I just want to support what you are doing and accelerate it.

As a patron (who understands the personality and joke behind Rudy), I'm actually so into this deal. I have some spare cash, and I honestly don't expect any of the FoW to be resellable, but I loved getting into FoW a few years ago and it's no longer at any of my LGS's. I know we're not super into quantifying 'fun' here, but at the end of the day if I can sit down with my partner, open a bunch of shit over the course of a few months and have some fun teaching and playing the game, then deals like this are made for me. I really, really don't think anyone worth their salt is getting into this thinking "Wow, I can buy these 90$ MSRP boosters that already sell for 30$ for 28$! I can't wait to flip this and become a billionaire!" I honestly just look forward to this because it will be fun and will make me happy.

Back when MtG almost killed off the entire RPG industry, the gamestores went all in. They didn’t care. They made money hand over fist on card sales. Wizards gobbled up TSR. No sympathy here for game stores that make or break it on one product. If MtG is what keeps your store afloat you’d better get ahead of the curve, sell out or diversify. Rudy is just doing the smart thing. I remember going into game stores and ALL they cared about was Magic. Because it was making them the most money. They didn’t stock much new RPG stuff because the margin wasn’t as high. Chickens home to roost. I like going into my LGS but not to pay over retail on packs. With nobody playing at nonexistent game stores, I don’t know how you grow the hobby.

Im not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that when the margins are low enough as they are, and no one ventures in to play table tops other than dnd and WH, you're basically telling someone to diversify out of a vice grip that they were already in. Easier said than done. Ofcourse change is inevitable. Knowing this doesn't make you a genius nor does it make you immune to the coming storm. If putting food on your table means selling snacks because mtg is a vehicle that breaks hard at even by design, then you probably shouldn't have opened up a game store anyway. c'est la vie

Derrick Swinney I agree with what you say as well. We are heading towards kitchen table Magic only if all the LGSs dry up or stop carrying the product. It’s sad to me they make more on snacks and drinks than product. The MtG “hobby” ... I just don’t see how it grows if Wizards just goes direct and through Amazon.

@fomori2 I think anyone with the business acumen for the "profitable business models" you mention would have the acumen to know better than to open up an lgs in such turbulent times. Simply too much risk. (You wouldn't try to build a house on land you knew would suffer from weekly earthquakes and flooding for the foreseeable future.) They'd simply run an online comics and card store out of the guest bedroom for a side hustle. What we are seeing now is a transitional period where the shop owners that are in the business primarily because they're passionate about these games are closing down. They never intended to have enough capital to handle these dire straits in the first place. (hence I mentioned earlier that they were already in a vice grip before they would have known that they needed to get out of it.) However, I can imagine that the more established LGS's will be able to soak up the patronage from these closing LGS's and they will weather this storm. Of those, the smart ones that will diversify intelligently -as you and the thread starter have mentioned- will see some amount of success in these times.

I'm curious why so many different sets are coming out so quickly is that normal? I have only been playing for about a year.

Interesting video and move man. Some questions for ya if you have time: If the LGS model does fail do you think Magic sales will remain similar to what they are today? What could cause game sales to increase if the main “community center” for playing the game disappears? What is your vision for investing more into a product with “shrinking” sales? Do you think people really do want the product, but only at a discount? Seems the “buy singles” mindset continues to grow and sealed product just sits. I wish ya all the best man, and I appreciate you sharing all that info in this vid.

i live in a medium sized US city. We have 3 LGS locations. One of them was official enough to host PPTQ's etc for MTG. They just closed. I contacted the next one to pre-order a couple boxes of GoR, and was informed they weren't doing a pre-release and no pre-orders w/buy-a-box promos etc... third place said they are getting only 6 boxes pre-release weekend, limit 1 per person. Both of the remaining LGS businesses look like they might be considering closing soon. I want to play Magic, i want to attend pre-releases, I want to play in PPTQ. I got back in the game last winter, after being absent since 2002. This is depressing. Also, Congrats Rudy! Looking forward to more news as things progress.

Yeah it sucks. It's sort of the store's faults for having all their eggs in one basket, but then if MTG isn't profitable at all, why sell it in the first place? It's mostly WoTC's fault for printing bad quality/poorly designed sets over and over and over. Just look at all of the bannings in standard the last two years. They missed a two card infinite combo that was released in the same set. If I want to get into standard this year, I have to be concerned that the $300 deck I throw together doesn't have a key piece banned. Chasing people away from the game with dumpster fire new sets, while making the older, more fun, more interesting cards prohibitively expensive due to a lack of interesting reprints is what's killing the physical game/game store's bottom lines.
