Alpacas de Gredos: Upset Machos and a Shelter Up-Grade
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Onyx, Ormand, and Pacha argued about who was standing too close, which delayed my work for a few minutes, while I let the shelter air-out from the smell of alpaca spit. Nitos and Bruno will soon join the adult males, and the territorial issues need to be addressed.
I hope to soften the personal space issues by adding another hay dispenser and another 2 meter length of trough.

Today's video documents their first moments in the adult boys' [machos] pastures.

@@alpacasdegredos I watched it, thank you.
They spit at each other, but do they actually hurt each other? It will be interesting to see their reaction to the boys!

The vet assured us that Bruno and Nitos are too small to challenge the hierarchy. They will fall in line and comfortably live with the adult males, until....they are fully grown like Ormand. Then, they may challenge.

They can hurt each other by using their fighting teeth. Castration or shredded ears. But, they are far away from the females, so there is less tension. Onyx needs a lot of personal space. If that space is violated, spitting occurs... and the threat of nipping the ears too. About 3 weeks ago, Ormand challenged Onyx and "won". For a week, Onyx was submissive to Ormand. Now, the old structure is back, and Onyx is in control. Most often, Onyx "yells"at Pacha or Ormand. This is usually enough to ward off the encroaching alpaca.
