Alpaca Birth! Prolonged labor, assisted delivery and umbilical cord intervention. Ep. 15

In this video Nicole suspects the last pregnant mama alpaca of the season is in labor. However this lady has history of dystocia and difficult deliveries. Dave is doing the supply run so Nicole has to manage the situation on her own. After a slow labor with a lack of effective contractions Nicole intervenes for a manual delivery! The baby still has the umbilical cord attached so Nicole in the moment quickly rips it with her bare hands. Baby is healthy, nursing and hits all the milestones - but the umbilicus is continuing to drip blood 24 hours after birth so Nicole has to tie off the cord with dental floss.
Every week we publish farm vlogs documenting our lives as large scale off grid alpaca breeders. With a herd of over 60 alpacas on 47 acres there is never a dull moment! Check out the fiber art & felting playlist for monthly tutorials on how we hand process the alpaca fiber ourselves transforming into functional wearable art.

Iodine on that cord end is great, dental floss is perfect. Don't cut cord until after floss. Don't use scissors to cut the raw cord. Clamps are best. Well done overall. Life is learning.
