Alopecia areata is believed to be an autoimmune disease resulting from a breach in the immune privilege of the hair follicles.[4] Risk factors include a family history of the condition.[2] Among identical twins, if one is affected, the other has about a 50% chance of also being affected.[2] The underlying mechanism involves failure by the body to recognize its own cells with subsequent immune mediated destruction of the hair follicle.[2]
No cure for the condition is known.[2] Efforts may be used to try to speed hair regrowth such as cortisone injections.[2][1] Sunscreen, head coverings to protect from cold and sun, and glasses if the eyelashes are missing are recommended.[2] In some cases, the hair regrows and the condition does not reoccur.[2] In others, hair loss and regrowth occurs over years.[2] Among those in whom all body hair is lost, less than 10% recover.[5]
About 0.15% of people are affected at any one time and 2% of people are affected at some point in time.[2][5] Onset is usually in childhood.[2] Males and females have the condition in equal numbers.[1] The condition does not affect a person's life expectancy.[2]

I had been felt insecured about myself especially around my head, because of a dry hair and an excessive amount of dandruff that it looks like it's snowing (in my country, it is obvious that it's a dandruff that are in my shoulders since we don't have winter season) and i experienced brittleness on my nails which made me thought that i have psoriasis but then i started suffered from hair loss which turned to a small bald spots on my head. I then seek to a dermatologist, it was such a long progress that i finally found that i was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata. But with the help of the doctor, i was slowly getting better without feeling insecured. ❤

Mine started with a small patch when I was 6-7 y.o. The doctors said rub garlic which, apart from the stench, did nothing. Later on my parents took me to a old barber who had a magical cure. The cure turned out to be acid (I don't remember what type). They applied it to the bald skin, the pain was decent. After some days, a scab formed and with time it fell off and hair regrew. After some years the problem returned and this time the acid wasn't helping. Nor did any other treatment I've tried - corticosteroids, aloe jabs, and many more which I've forgotten. Around age 20 it was impossible to hide the patches so I started shaving completely.

The term "Alopecia" means hair loss and covers many conditions. Alopecia areata is one type, causing patchy hair loss. Using "alopecia" to specifically mean alopecia areata is incorrect, as it includes various types like androgenic alopecia (male/female pattern hair loss) and many others.

Alopecia areata at 15 can be distressing, as it causes patchy hair loss due to the immune system attacking hair follicles. Its exact cause is unclear but may involve genetics and environmental factors. Treatment options vary, including topical medications, injections, or light therapy, and it's crucial to consult a dermatologist for proper care. Many individuals experience hair regrowth, and seeking emotional support through counseling or groups can be beneficial.
