Along the banks of the Yangtze - E4/6 - The Dam

China is one of the largest world powers but we can hardly put a face on it yet. Let alone have any idea of how the average Chinese man lives and works, or what his ambitions or fears are. Photographer Ruben Terlou took his camera along the banks of the River Yangtze, talking to the locals about the impact of the economic progress. In a six-episode series, we are taken from Shanghai, the most westernized part of China, to Shangri-La, the most authentic Chinese part, to discover the real China, 40 years after Mao's death.
Episode 4 - The Dam
The Three Gorges Dam has taken the place of the Chinese Wall as China's pride and joy in terms of man-made structures. With a capacity of 15 times the Borssele plant, this dam is the largest hydropower station. It is considered a great victory over nature. But nature as well as mankind have had to sacrifice a lot too. 90 villages and 13 cities disappeared into the water. And Chinese nature organizations worry about the fate of the Chinese river dolphin - or river pig, as the Chinese call this endearing creature. Ruben is given permission to view the interior of this immense dam, and sails the stagnant water on a cruise ship filled with Chinese tourists - while the ship's crew dream of the old days when they were working as fishermen on the wild river.

Really disappointing to see the rude behavior of badmouthing the fellow in front of him simply because he does not understand Dutch. Maybe I should not superimpose my moral judgement on a culturally different westerner? The fisherman saw some river dolphins with his expert eyes while you did not. Later we saw some when the camera captured at the right time. Huge changes are taking place in China, there are some winners and losers. I appreciate that you are bringing this into light. The lady was nostalgic about the past. But she actually said her life was much better than before. Not sure if that got across.

I understand that it must be very difficult for the Chinese people to develop a strong economy, feed everyone, but also help nature - it's a task that they are doing better than many countries (I'm looking at you India) but can still learn much to ensure that the future is healthy for humans and nature.

And to be fair, the reporter (kudos bro) moaning about poor air quality... well at least the dam is renewable.

Well said. The last story in this episode sounds like one-sided. I understand what the old couple said but the way the old lady was telling the story somehow sounded contriving. Since the reporter's goal was to dig dirt, finally he thought he got on some thing good.

The three Gorges dam also supplies water to the water starved northern places and cities like Beijing, apart from reducing China's old sorrow which were the floods. Aha, the fisherman didn't li or was instructed to spread propaganda and the porpoises are there... haha the Dutchman is happiest on his bike. Thanks for sharing. Love these videos and you amazing integration with the laobaixing.

All I want to say is that the Chinese are very kind and hospitable, we invite you to our house and share our food. But if you've been trying to report with misleading questions and prejudiced suggestions, why do you report? Think of yourself as a moral high ground, shame on you.

So a few thousand local river dwellers are displaced by the dam, but millions more are benefitting by the dam.

breaking the conversation abruptly and ignoring the interviewee is not polite. You have an subjective and biased view on the river dolphin.
