@@hoovaq5550 Well the in-game reasoning was that Sandshrew and Vulpix were no longer successful predators in their usual locations in Alola so they adapted to the cold, mountainous areas and became the apex predators there. Essentially, a type change with a lore reason. Grant it, I'm sure similar reasoning could be made for some of these. Like maybe in Alola, Swampert have issues living near or in water due to Toxapex so they adapted to be fully land based.

I'm guessing it has something to do with being a reference to the deadly poisonous gasses created by volcanoes, such as carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, hydrochloric acid and carbon monoxide - many of which can kill you where you stand (or kneel).
