Almost The Perfect Compact Camera With Large Sensor

Happy New Year 2024! For the first video of the year, I am revisiting an 10 years old camera, the Panasonic Lumix LX100. LX100 is an ambitious camera, having large Micro Four Thirds image sensor, bright zoom lens, built in EVF and a few other useful features in a compact form factor. This was almost the perfect compact camera. However, there were a few shortcomings I have discovered, having used the LX100 extensively, and I wish Panasonic could have fixed them!

I think the main draw to the LX100 and subsequent Mark II version was the fast and sharp integrated lens. The target audience (speaking from a North American market perspective) was current M43 owners and/or people that wanted a small camera with a fast standard zoom because they don't want to mess with buying and carrying other lenses. For that latter group, going with a GM1 or GX888 meant being limited to a 12-32 f/3.5-5.6 or 14-42 f/3.5-5.6 in the same volume envelope. I looked at getting an LX100II but ended up with the LX10 because I wanted something pocketable and I already have a bunch of M43 bodies and many compact and professional native lenses. I have recommended the LX100 and the LX100II to many people I know who are interested in getting something that produces results similar to what I provide but at a lower price without needing to swap lenses. In 2024 the LX100II still brings amazing value when you consider the cost of a GX85, EM10IV, GX9, etc and a Lumix 12-35 f/2.8 or Oly 12-40 f/2.8.

I brought this camera last year and it's amazing and I absolutely love it. I took it on holiday with me in October to Norway. The pictures came out like postcards. Very impressed with the first time use of a Panasonic camera. The thing I like most about my Lumix is the different filters you can use to set your picture. The results are astonishing.

I got mine in late 2014 and still use it occasionally. For a birder who wants to be able to photograph subjects besides birds this makes a good second camera to carry in addition to the big lens setup. Sadly mine has a spec of dust on the sensor now but otherwise still works well. If any camera manufacturer is listening a few of us are still interested in this kind of camera.

I have recently purchased the LX100 ii and rank this as one of my favourite cameras in my collection because of the engagement with the tactile controls, multi aspect ratio sensor and mono filters. It really makes you think about your photography and engages you in the process. And that is coming from a photographer that uses MFT cameras (OM1, EM5) as well as full frame Leica Q2 and Sony RX1R ii. Its an absolute gem of a camera and commanding a high price second hand.

Happy New Year Robin! I'm delighted to have discovered your channel. Seems we share common opinions and have shared many of the same cameras. It's also great to revisit Malaysia, an old home away from home I love and miss, and am considering returning to live. I think your take on the LX100 MK-1 is spot on with the exception of image quality as my results have been much different. . I've had 3 LX-100s them A cheap well-worn MK-1, a second Mk-1 I bought new, and a LX100-Mk2 that I only used briefly that would randomly power-off and refuses to power-on and I returned. While the MK-2 was better in some technical respects, my MK-1 seemed to have better contrast and specular highlights and colors, and retained the pure, classic Leica look I love. The MK-2 Looked more like a GX-85 and the extra pixels seemed to be lost in the in-camera processing, so I decided to stick with the MK-1. As for image quality, what you showed is very sub-par with the still-image results have got from both my MK-1 LX100s. Specular highlights are missing as are contrast and detail, and I've not seen the color cast using Capture One or Lightroom. Your images look like my first LX-100 Lightroom when I first got the LX-100, and I thought it was just an "OK' camera. However, when processed the same images in CP-1, with the proper profile the results were on another level and the LX-100 became one of my most loved cameras. I suspect you used CP-1 so I wonder if you may have an import profile issue. I'm using CP-1 from a couple of years ago on a PC . I also like that the LX100 is only rated at 12 megapixels in multi-format, It's actually using the same 16MP sensor from the GX7 and with CP-1 you can pull the entire sensor and pull a bit more of the image off the image circle for about 14MP and about 11mm (22mm equivalent lens) I've used my LX-100s as B-Cams with and as fly-cams on gimbals and a drone a few times, and and even main camera for some run and gun and they are very respectable video shooters with some obvious functional limitations.

Welcome to 2024 Robin, may it be a good one for you. I almost bought the LX100 for all the positive reasons you give but didn't for all the negative reasons you also give. Most of my photos are taken in good bright light so the 1" sensor in my Canon G5Xii is virtually as good as my M43 gear. The tilt screen and good pop up evf plus the 24-120 f1.8-2.8 lens have been very satisfying to use, and a much nicer experience than my Sony RX100. Thanks for posting.

Coming from using a Leica Q2, I love the classic dials for aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, and LX100 has it all. It is a perfect little every day carry around camera that I am going to take everywhere on a daily basis. Besides ergonomics, i am pleasantly surprised by the image quality and rendition. I agree with many of your criticisms of the LX100. A tilt screen would have been great and the sequential RGB EVF drove me nuts. However, I discovered that by not using certain functions (histogram and peaking were two of them) the EVF no longer looked like an explosion in a paint factory. I now find using the LX100 and other Lumix cameras with similar EVFs much more enjoyable.

I bought a used LX100 just under 2 years ago and I'm pleased with it. The skin tone inaccuracies don't bother me, maybe becasue I generally don't shoot portraits, but the manualy controls with dials to adjust instantly make it great as an enthusiast's product. With a 4/3rds sensor and fast lens, it was never going to be a small propduct and it feels nice and weighty in the hands, giving confidence that it is a premium product. Lack of a touchscreen, fixed (non-tilting) LCD display and lack of built-in flash are my main gripes with it

I have the LX100ii, it is one of a kind compact and my absolute favorite as daily camera. Despite it issues, I love how easy it is to carry and the tactile control is the best part. Also it has a pretty versatile lens, bright and have a good close focusing capability, though obviously not very sharp but still pretty decent. I personally don't find a problem with the color, from what I have seen, the color is pretty consistent with my full frame S5. EVF is, as you said, is generally unusable though can be helpful in very bright situation, while I think the LCD is actually fine in the mk2. The touchscreen is also responsive and helped a lot to pinpoint AF. I do wish they make a mk3 with tilt screen and the newer sensor though. Thanks for the review. :)

Hello Robin. I loved your photographs and I have no problem with the colours from this camera. I have it and I love it. The viewfinder is no problem for me and I find it a very good viewfinder. I put a CPL filter on it and immediately saw a depth of colour improvement in sunlight if positioned at 180 degrees to the sun. Skies come out nice and blue and shiny surfaces and water looks better with more colour. I also love how I can set it up the way I like, E.g. constant preview on.

I was looking to buy a new LX100 II recently but couldn't find one. I wanted a walkabout camera, so I bought a new RX100 VII and I'm really enjoying it. Astonishing autofocus, lovely colours, sharp and solidly built. It's immensely powerful for a pocket camera. I normally shoot with fairy large lenses (wildlife) and in RAW. But I'm mainly using the little Sony in Superior Auto mode, where it uses various tricks to produce surprisingly clean JPEGs. Perfect for my secondary interests - street, buildings and occasional outdoor sports.

Total agree with you on all these points. The LX100 was a strong contender for me when I was looking for an advanced point-and-shoot to recommend for shooting during bike trips. One of my biggest gripes was the EVF. I already had experience with other Lumix compacts with sequential displays. As you mention, when I don't have fun shooting, I simply can't abide a camera regardless of its results. Today, my advanced point-and-shoot of choice is the Canon G7X MkII. I wish it had an EVF but that would only add to the cost. I find that its image quality equals the RX100 MkV and love its fast and versatile zoom - 24-100 equivalent. It's too bad the output of advanced point-and-shoots have decreased to nearly nothing. Lumix could have been a contender.

The biggest problem is dust. It dwarves all the other issues. The lens sucks in dust, the dust gets to the sensor and it stays there. The vacuum and water bottle trick works for a very few, but the only real cure is to strip the camera down from the back to get to the sensor. Until it sucks more dust in. Other than that, I love it.

Hi Robin -- I purchased this camera today. I am a long-time M43 Olympus user, and wanted a compact camera to take along, with my E-M5 and lenses on an overseas trip. The alternative would have been a new FujiFilm X100vi, just announced. The Panasonic was just such a value proposition, at 25% the cost of the new X100vi, and offering the PanaLeica zoom lens rather than single prime lens. I know I sacrifice resolution (a lot of resolution) in choosing the Panasonic over the X100vi, but how many MPs do we really need anyway.

Had the Leica version of the Mark 1 and the Panasonic Mark 2. Better color with the Leica. I wish the zoom was easier to use in manual. The power movement is slow and nervous. Wish the camera was less jittery in general. Accidentally pressing a function button breaks its attention span. But overall when you consider the range and f-stops of the zoom, what other lens by any maker in any format compares? It is like a Cartier Bresson wet dream for the street. It starts at 24 equivalent. Should I use 35 or 50 or 28? Dumb question when you can have all of them at a decent aperture.

I wonder if they are going to make some LX100 mkIII. It might be interesting with articulating LCD, modern EVF, back and front dials instead of those "retro" numbered wheels on top. It might be interesting to do real life 1:1 comparison with Olympus XZ-2 for some street shooting day on daylight :) It has similar size, smaller CMOS of course, but still quite good RAW image output below ISO800, tilting LCD is useful, EVF can be attached, it has own flash and is a hair smaller. Using a new chip+software would bring Autofocus to the current state of art (S5mkII). It is classy. question is whether modern alternative would sell as well. I consider Retro is good because it is a proven design by 50 years of photography, but sometimes new haptics/designs can be simpler and exactly what you want if not born out of the idea to spare some money for less or cheaper controls.

Sacrafices are always made with little form factor cameras.......always. Panasonic has always had the motto of providing the best and most options/functions in a camera versus value per doller and I think this is the case with the LX100. I do believe if panasonic wanted to, then they could make the best pocket sized M43 camera in the world with a retro design to steal away Fuji shooters, but then the price would go up significantly too. HAPPY NEW YEAR, Robin, I wish you new inexhaustible flows of your renown positive energy! But let's not forget the critical judgement which you might step up in your videos. This video becomes the very first camera video I've watched in 2014, and it's nicely summed up. I've been Panasonic-based for almost ten years now, and the skin tone has always been an issue, even with the G9. Oddly, the GM1 had an atypical, non-Panasonic color gamut. I couldn't say that the skin tone and the general color balance with the Olympus bodies is exact, but at least it is more pleasing, more satisfying, "artistic" if you will. I've been just waiting for an E-M1 mk III to cross my way! In retrospect of my crammed many years of (media) experience, I think we should all work on our personal idiosyncrasies and imbalances to counter certain "protruding" parts a bit. I, for one, should fight my tendency to procrastinate; you could tame your expressive enthusiasm, then it might actually reach a new, more refined level. This present way you could be perhaps appearing somewhat theatrical or exaggerated or contrived to a Western passer by (though we regulars know you're truly an honest soul). Just an idea, Robin! Your natural spontaneous approach works anyway, so I'm just suggesting you give this a thought. Also it could help if you worked on the cleaner pronunciation of your otherwise excellent English. To boost your competitiveness and triple your followers, who knows. This is showbiz, after all. One of your strong points is your excellent photography, give us more! Why not include once in a while a short remarks on Malaysian or Far East culture you come across in the field? Or the mentality you stumble upon? Have you ever thought about showing some video clips as examples too? Why not. Whole-hearted January 1st greetings from a mellow quiet day in the Lowlands.

Panasonic... An *almost* great brand that makes *almost* great cameras. They always find a way to screw up their products - like sticking with bad AF systems, or bad EVF/display technologies, or bad colors. Owned a bunch of their mirrorless cameras and always ended up selling them because they just fail at feeling good cameras to shoot with. Maybe it is cost savings, maybe something else, but the corners they end up cutting always make the difference in a very negative way. I truly hope that their new cameras don't keep following the same cursed path. The LX100 could have sold like hot cakes (see the success of the X100's), but they f*cked it up by being "cheap" where they should have not.

It might have an mFT sensor, but it also crops into the sensor, so it can’t be discribed as a mFT camera. Even with the multiformat, it’s marketing bs and you end up with under 12mpix in 3:2. second point any 1“ is cleaner at base ISO and yes, it’s the mft is 1 stop better at high ISO. The question is, what do you use more?! I shoot most of my images with these little cameras at base ISO. For what it is, it’s a bad package when you compare it to a Canon G5X MKII with it’s 1“ combined with the 24-120mm F1.8-2.8. And here you get way more dof when you’re at 120mm F2.8. This camera was to much marketing. It was nice, the Leica version was super sexy, but 12mpix, a very medicore lens and the missing flipscreen, where a big no go for me. If they would be able to put a lens in it that covers the whole sensor, this camera could have be such a nice back up camera for events etc. but it never was also not the II version. The little G5X MKII is this camera, not at events with super low light but at a lot of commercial event with big stages and some what good lighting, there it delivers. And you end up with 20 usable mpix.
