Hey! Small scale farmer from the north here :) If you can, put a thick layer of straw or fallen leaves on your carrot beds next autumn before the ground freezes. I agree! I put a straw bale on top of my carrots, with a tarp on top to shake off the snow (or the ice that we frequently get here in Eastern Ontario, Canada) and I can harvest my carrots in January. You've never had carrots to sweet or juicy as these winter-harvested ones!

I live right by Lake Ontario (ON side), I like gardening and just wondering about the winter plant boxes. Do you have them covered or just with the straw on top? Last year we had kale, and other greens growing far in to February (I had old windows on top of the planter boxes)

@@mjbrown7886 It all really depends on the size of your container and what you grow in it. The smaller the raised bed, plant box, etc the likelier it is to often freeze and thaw which will damage your plants. Some, like kale or carrots don’t mind it as much as chard or lettuce for instance. You could also use both the straw and the window to maximize insulation. I’d recommend looking into Nikki Jarbour, a gardener from Nova Scotia, who has a great book on winter gardening techniques. Also, One Yard Revolution on youtube is great for winter growing at a home scale. Best of luck!

Can you also make suggestions on how to keep mice from eating produce? If it is voles, then gardeners cloth with metallic threads will work, and concrete blocks around the particular plots, but mice that eat from the top down?

Personally I think you have accomplished so much in those 4 months. Am in awe of your skills and dedication. The place looks stunning. Love the snow covered drone shots as well. Take care and smile often 😊

Everything is so lovely, Rosie. Note from a granny on warming the house - perhaps you’ve already noticed - it’s really about warming up the structure (vs just the air) & keeping it warm. When we make winter visits to our Czech farmhouse it takes a few days until the walls absorb the heat & then if we just keep the stoves going in the mornings & evenings the actual structure doesn’t have a chance to cool down too much & we stay pretty comfortable. You can save on wood that way. It just takes a while of steady heating to get to that point (you can feel the walls to see how it’s going - they will be less icy-cold). It’ll really help if your kitchen stove is fixed (it’s wood fired?) & you’ll have a better balance of heat. The stovetop fans can also help with distribution. And lined/insulated curtains can help keep in heat at night. Enjoy your beautiful bespoke space. You’re a remarkable woman. 💗

Stowe must be a wood stowe, because that is the way we used to cook here in Northern countries, Finland ( where I am from), Sweden and Norway. Rosie will eventually be able to use that too. But curten trick is a good advise. It works. She is so handy.

I nearly always have a kettle on top of my woodburner , it stops the air being quite so dry and also saves on electric for drinks and the washing up.

For next year, think about possibly getting three or four chickens - barred rocks and Orpingtons are good hardy cold weather birds. They can free range in the summer, and in the winter will clear your garden of weeds and bugs, turn over the soil and "fertilize" it for the next spring. They also eat mice! In return, you get on average an egg per bird every other day, good source of protein.

​@GiGiBlogger generally speaking if you do it right, you can give chickens what they need and go away for a few days and they'll be fine. If you look up the Simple Living Alaska channel, they often go away for a couple days in the dead of Alaskan winter, and their chickens are doing fantastic. It's just a matter of making sure their shelter is adequate.

@@GiGiBlogger I've made tub feeders for my chooks - big tub with a lid and four to six L-bend PVC plumbing pipes big enough for the chickens to get their head into. Fill it up, close the lid, put it in the coop, and the chickens feed themselves, if they're not free-ranging. Same with water - 50 gallon plastic barrel with water nipples or the like to self-water. There's plenty of instructional videos on how to make these. They last up for a couple weeks if they're large enough.

Coming from a 61 year old woman who has sewn, slip covered, and reupholstered for decades, you did a neat job with beautiful fabric!

Everything is looking great, Rosie. Well Done! 👏 All your hard work and sacrifices are really paying off. Don’t forget to buy a Carbon Monoxide alarm for your room. I have had four wood burning stoves - the last one (age 2 years and a good German make) was maintained yearly (as always) by a qualified HEATAS engineer in the UK and chimney swept, as usual, too…my husband and I got sick - ironically two weeks after the maintenance visit) I called the engineer to ask if there was any reason my husband and i felt very sleepy and unwell..he came rushing back; did loads of checks and found a leak in the very back of the flue pipe (almost undetectable). We both ended up in hospital that very day with Carbon Monoxide poisoning and to stay for 4 days and were not allowed back into ours home until the fire dept., came to check everything. They condemned the 2 year old stove and we had to buy a new one…..WITH carbon monoxide alarms fitted into our home. Other folk in the village also were unaware of this potential issue with wood burners and all had alarms fit too. Just a friendly tip. I am loving your videos. Hats off to you and all of your work- it’s looking fabulous. Love From PD in the UK. XXX

DO NOT PLACE WOOD ON THE STOVE!!!!! Put it close to it. The air will dry it and warm it up. Wood burns better when it warms up with room temp. Be safe. You do not have enough wood for the entire winter. Try to continue to split more wood. Good luck.

Wow, Rosie. You say it's taken you four months - but in that time you have made an office, a sewing studio, a library, a bedroom, a dining room and a sitting room! It is lovely to live simply and have everything in a small space. It must feel so good to be getting some of those finishing touches done - handles on the cabinets and drawers, your banquette cushions upholstered, pretty cushions sewn, and "all" your books displayed. Hi Rosie only found you couple of months ago and have watched dozens of your vlogs, you are such an inspiration not only in your building skills but the way you live. I was amazed at how you coped with going shopping with a tent and camping in a forest on the ground with just a doona and tent and eating very little. I woke up recently and thought of you, went on a fasting diet, walk a few km a day ( to start with) and have been throwing out useless stuff I do not need. I'm a swede living in the netherlands. I grew up on the countryside, just trees and fields as far as you can see. I used to not really like it because of how lonely it can be (especially for an only child) but this video made me cry because I love my country so much and it made me so homesick to see it.

Homesick is a sign...to listen to your soul and gut. Many people long to their place of origin, when getting older and older. It seems, that you need to go away from your home, to eventually appreciate it more afterwards. The Netherlands are tiny, very noisy, closed in often. To much stress. I live in Belgium. I long for Sweden and the lonelyness, nature, away from people. My father's mother was Danish and i realize i belong to the far north in nature, as an introverted loving silence, nature. I never fitted in Belgium. The people are not my kind of people either. They see my introversion, longing for solitude, nature, living in peace as pathological. I believed something was wrong with me, until i saw Sweden's video's and people, nature and i suddenly 'knew' i was home. I think my Danish grandmother has to do with it. My father was also more someone from the far north, loving Lapland. Follow your heart, soul, where you 'belong' and are longing for. Know yourself and what you are and need to feel at ease. Lady, i wish you well.

I do feel happy in the Netherlands and I know I would miss it and all the people I love here now when I move back (I never planned on living away from Sweden forever). That small ladder would make a nice drying rack for herbs. Maybe hang it from the ceiling in your kitchen then hang bundles of herbs to dry from the rungs. The top could be a shelf for light things!!

I love your humor!😊 I feel your excitement at having little spaces to store your things. Those tiny knobs work so well. And what a blessing to have spaces to store those larger awkward sized things. It's coming along so nicely....a nice cozy space to spend your winter days being creative! Blessings!

Suggestion to get a stove fan to move the heat from front room into other parts of your cabin. Putting insulated drapes/blinds on windows would keep more heat in at night.

Rosie, you've done a brilliant job and I admire your resilience and determination. You're also brave, I wonder how many people have told you you've done something wrong or it would've been easier to do that!!! It doesn't matter, you do it your way as you're the one who is living there, and what a place to live, I envy you. Keep at it girl, your rocking it.

I watch your videos with joy and awe. How much love you put into every detail is wonderful. You made your dream come true and I envy you for that. It was always my greatest wish to own a Swedish house and to enjoy the peace and quiet. Unfortunately, people always put it off until it's suddenly too late. Hats off to you for your willpower, strength and courage 🥰

It's one room with a kitchen, bathroom, hall, a green house, guest house, shed... and incredible mountain views. And most of all, what every introvert loves: solitude. I know that I do. That's why I live in a rural town on top of a mountain plateau in Australia with my hubby. We do get snow here too, which I thoroughly enjoy during winter, but not with the same intensity found in Sweden. Student accommodation is very different, lots of people crammed into as tiny a space as possible with an outcome that favours maximum return for the landlord. I really love your initiative, determination and analytical skills behind your creative nature. Stay warm, Rosie, I hope your wood arrives soon and looking forward to the next video.

Your patience and perseverance is phenomenal.

You can design a noncombustible “wood-keep” to keep your wood dry as well as warm and cozy.

What I recognize... It's a challenge and a drive to start things, a much more bigger one to actually finish them. Just take a rest and do it, before starting something else!! is what I tell myself. Doesn't always work... but in the end I do get all most all done 😉

I do have double pane windows, when it is really cold I close the drapery most of the time, it helps keep the heat in. For sure I close them at night. I would encourage you to get curtains or drapery coverings on the library room and the room where your fireplace is. And for sure close them at night. A sewing project for th long winter days. Your videos just fly by. I look forward to your updates more than any other channel I’m subscribed to. It’s amazing what you have managed to accomplish with such simple tools and materials. Personally, I really like the “crazy” fabric pillows. It adds some texture and some softer, more feminine details to the room but the pattern feels very in keeping with a Swedish home. Definitely recommend getting a heat propelled fan for the stove to help move the warm air around and I’d recommend getting a small cast iron vessel of some sort that you can keep filled with water to humidify the air. It will help carry the heat around the home and keep the air from getting too dry. Also, as someone else commented, be careful about putting wood directly on the stove. Once wood dries out and heats up, it can combust surprisingly quickly. Keeping it near the stove to warm it up is fine, but not directly atop the stove like that. You could probably make an easy boot drier to put beside the stove as well. Just some dowels on a stand that you can place the boots on upside down. We use them over our vents to dry hats, mitts, and boots. They work quite well. You wouldn’t want the souls of your boots to melt lol. Once you get the hang of the stove, you’ll be amazed how hot it can get. ❤

Rosie you truly have accomplished a lot.Ive heated my house 🏡 for years and years putting wood 🪵 on top of a wood 🪵 stove surface is a no no ! Please 🙏 be careful.A rod iron small wood rack is advisable…..I know you don’t have experience with operating a wood 🪵 stove and all the in and out of having one but you will learn

A beautiful bespoke range of very useful storage spaces. It's amazing to know that you did this all by yourself. I also love the subtle soft colours/patterns of nature on your cushion covers. You'll be surprised how much wood you need for a fire. You can never have too much. On your wonderful drone shots I see lots of fallen trees around your home, if you get a chance maybe build something simple outdoors in preparation for harvesting and storing the trees as soon as the winter thaw starts before they get too wet ant start to rot. I'd also invest in a wood moisture content meter for your newly cut wood, they are inexpensive and a vital tool in burning only wood that maximises the burn energy of your wood but drier wood makes for a cleaner/safer flue.

Great idea !

If you tie the corner of your tarp that covers your wood pile to a weighted item, maybe a piece of wood, it will hold the tarp down and you won’t have to tie and untie it all winter. I can’t imagine trying to do that when it gets really cold.

Wow!! Looks great. I honestly would not call having this livable space a student room. There isn’t any space elsewhere in the house due to your construction studio. Things will transform in due time. Really glad to hear about the extra firewood. The house is looking great. FYI: curtains can help with insulation of windows. Not exactly your style but on cold winter days, the added warmth might be needed.

I agree. Blackout curtains are thick, keep out the light, and keep warmth in. We need dark rooms when we sleep for seratonin. No computer lights, etc. Keeping the heat in with curtains helps alot. I live in cold N Germany and we have snow here. The curtains can be take down in summer if necessary, but they are a must in winter imo. 🤔

She could always do the clear plastic you put in the outside of your windows and use a blow dryer to get a good fit. They have come a long ways and look just like the window. I live in Alaska and at present only get about 6hrs of daylight, so only have 12 inch crochet like valances and that's almost to much. I want to let every bit of light in. Many here use blackout curtains for summer though when we inly get a few hours of true darkness.

The fabric for those pillows is beautiful. I am in search of the same or similar pattern for pillow slip covers for my own sofa. As always, lovely work. I greatly admire your craftsmanship. I really enjoy your content and seeing your quiet life, which more and more I seem to covet. Looking forward to your next episode, until then take care of yourself and let your creative ideas and designs flourish, as I am sure there are countless others... at least a 132,000 of us and most assuredly that number is growing that take great joy in watching.

You need a heat powered fan, to place on top of your stove. My parents use one all winter and it really works well.

if you try to avoid putting wood on top of the wood on top, you will get more heat out into the room(s) because the wood stops the heat from spreading around the room

Looks fantastic! You need to have one room to live in so you can store your tools and materials in the other rooms to work inside for the winter. Perfect adult decision!

love it. I actually believe that if the 'ladder' was much darker it would be a good contrast even 'burnt' wood would look good. also with the usb shelves if you manage torun a thin piece of lumber along the front edge it will stop the edge getting scuffed and also stop them bowing over time. the small cupboard top was such a good idea

Get a fan for the woodstove to spread the heat. There are heat-powered fans that you just put on it and they run when you start the fire. What to look for is a "Kaminfläkt"

To achieve better heat, you should install internal windows (winter windows) that prevent cold drafts at the windows. You should (read must) fit a cover on your chimney (a hat). Otherwise, you will have problems with moisture in the future. However, I am hugely impressed by what you do And remember: Experience is the name you give your mistakes

Don’t worry, I’ve found that belongings morph to fill the space. Surely you have some beautiful branches, seed pods etc to fill the space. Another thought I had was have you thought of getting a collapsible bath tub now the weather is frigid? They fold down to 22 cm and would be lovely to have now you have a fireplace. Also you’re losing a lot of heat through your windows, enough fabric for curtains? Room looks great❤️✨
