Just as a side note the ball return I filmed was not functioning how it should the one on the other side worked as it is suppose to, once it hits that ring its suppose to stop then slowly enter the area with the other balls so they dont smack into each other...Also I didn't mention it in the video but half the balls here are rubber...

My dad used to be a pinsetter but he had a machine helping him. The machine set the pins, but all he did was load the table and then it would set the pins. Kind of like an 8270 with no pin elevator or pin wheel.

This is the kind of bowling alley I wouldn't mind owning someday. I've been bowling off and on for a little over forty years. The good thing about this one is the fact you don't have mechanical problems that modern bowling alleys have.

We sadly lost a near 100 year old bowling alley in Baltimore not to long ago. The Patterson Bowling Lanes were in the Fells Point neighborhood, and were duckpins lanes that had been opened since the mid 1920s. Babe Ruth had bowled there, among other noteworthy people. I grew up around the corner from there and went to the bowling alley countless numbers of times. It closed at the end of 2022/beginning of 2023 and is being torn down, along with a bank on the same plot of land to make luxury condos/apartments. Update: The Patterson WILL stay a partial bowling alley. The new owners are converting it to mixed use, keeping 4-6 lanes for duckpin bowling.

Babe Ruth was on the list of famous people who stayed at Rohman's Inn (or at least drank at the bar) where the bowling alley in the video is. Maybe he bowled there too?
I love the sound of the bowling pins knocking down it’s such a satisfying sound
That's one of the coolest things I've ever seen...such a nostalgic atmosphere
I used to live near Shohola, a short drive from this pub. One time there was a group of old ladies that wanted to bowl but didn't want to set up the pins, so me and a friend got paid like $15 each to set up the pins for them all night. Pretty cool place

Southport Lanes in Chicago closed last year. They had four lanes with no pinsetters. A local candlepin bowler brought his own pins. So when you see a center with no pinsetters keep in mind, you can bring your own duckpins, candlepins, five pins, ninepins, whatever. Thanks for posting.

The bowling alley in my hometown does not have an automatic pinsetter, so they hire people to do the job, just like this one. The difference is that they use small balls and it has a "pinsetter area", if you will. They have a place to sit, above the pins, and it has green and red lightbulbs that the pinsetters turn on when they are ready for you to throw the ball. I spent my entire childhood playing there, sometimes even having to set the pins myself. It was somehow exciting. Now I live in the city and it's all about automatic pinsetters, obviously. I'm from Argentina.

This is so cool! Having people set up the pins might still be the better idea. When I used to bowl in a league every weekend the machine would always malfunction at least once and we'd have to call the desk lol.
@stompingpeak2043

Huh? Yeah the machine may break down from time to time or need attention. It's not every frame though. You would go through that experience on every single shot.
Here in the UK this was my job before COVID, I worked in a pub sticking up pins in a game that we call Skittles its basically bowling but 9 pins instead of 10. So i can now officially say i identify as a bowling machine

I live a few miles from this place. It's just 100 miles from NYC. Pay us a visit. The scenic drive alone makes the trip worthwhile, especially in the spring and fall months. There's plenty to do up here, including fly fishing, hiking, camping, rafting and kayaking.
This actually really cool, usually I wouldn’t like old things but this is sick
wow, that is cool!!! I always wondered why pins had a hole in bottom or how they got the pins lined up right back in the day. This short answered some questions I had about "ancient" bowling. Kudos to the pub for keeping it up and in use!

So, I recently learned that the holes other primary purpose is to keep the wood in the pins moisturized, which is why you still see those holes even with modern pinsetters. :)

That's awesome. Thanks for sharing.
When I was young in the 1950’s and early 1960’s there still were a few bowling alleys that had manual pin setters that the alley had boys or men do the work. I remember that ring at the end of the return that slowed the ball back to the rack of balls. Eventually most of these old alleys either updated with automatic pin setters or went out of business. Now most blowing centers even have automatic scoring systems that older players like my father thought it took another part of the game away. But it is nice to see some one is keeping old style bowling alive.

There is almost an identical single bowling lane on Mackinac Island at the “Woods”. They must’ve been installed/manufactured by the same company. Very interesting stuff for sure!
Pinsetters must’ve hated people who were good at bowling back then.
Check out the holler house bar in Milwaukee,WI. It houses the two oldest sanctioned bowling lanes still in use in the basement and they still use pin boys to reset the pins while you bowl.
That is too cool. I love seeing things like this that preserve history.
that is a really cool video... very lovely old bowling alley. thanks for sharing! greetings from cologne, germany arthur
I used to set pins at the local YMCA for 50 cents a game in the 1960's. There was always some wise guy that would throw another ball while you were setting up the next frame of pins. Just like the video, you perched behind the pins with your feet dangling down. Of course, there was no oiling the lanes and you had to pick up the ball and put it on the ball return rails.
This reminds me of Wii Sports Bowling
Learned some history about bowling 👌
That's awesome!
Cool thanks for posting
Pretty cool. Do they oil the lanes or do they keep then dry? Seems like it would be fun for a little while. 15 bucks an hour though? That's a bit much

We had a 6-laner in the back of a bar in Fair Haven, NJ . . . like this (with the spikes) . . . where I set pins. 10 cents/game plus tips . . . and I could bowl for free if there were no customers. The building is still there but they filled in the gutters and turned it in to a ballroom and subdivided it in to offices.
My grandparents used to take me there when i was a kid. They lived right across the river in Eldred.
Really cool!
I set pins as a teen but we, at least, had the mechanical pensetter that would drop the pens in place. We still had to jump down into the pit to gather them up and hoist the ball onto the return. Usually it was one guy to a lane but I've done both lanes myself. Quite hectic.

Here in Golfito, Costa Rica, we have one bowlinga alley just like that, but with only 3 lanes. And the balls are smaller and without holes, so it is a lot more difficult to hit a strike. It is going to be refurbished but most people do not know how to play with the smaller balls, just older guys like me.
I used to set pins in Lead S.D. got 10 cents a lane. That's 1 person, 1 game 10 cents. It still makes me smile when I think of those days.
Right down the road from me. I have bowled there many times. Love the winter Olympics they hold there.
Wow that's cool I didn't know that at all pen setter does all the work setting them up and taking out the pins thet were knocked down and sending ball back sounds like fun but now it's all automated I wonder if we would ever go back to manual bowling humm.
cool little piece of history right here
fascinating how the old bowling mechanics worked back in the days compared to today
