We all know Paul has had his problems, Walter being his manager and obviously a decent human being knew this. So he invited Paul over to spend time with Smith family at Christmas. I always thought what caring and fatherly thing that was. To many people in football exploited Gazza but not Walter. He genuinely cared for what many an England fan thinks of as our National Treasure.

Tears blinding me here. I’m far from a Rangers fan but someone like Walter Smith played a part in all of our lives here in Scotland. As important to our football as the ball itself. Sad day for us all. A great man, the type of which they don’t make any more. My sincere condolences to all who knew him and admired him. Tremendous tribute from Ally here, who must have found that so difficult. Rest well Walter. You were some man.

I grew up at Ibrox during Walters years. Such a legend, a gent and a man not to be messed with at the same time. I used to think 73 was old, now that I am 43 and my mum is 68 it is not old at all. Deeply saddened by the loss of a great man, ambassador and clearly a much loved and wonderful friend, father, husband and grandfather. If any of us could live life and achieve 5% of the position and stature that Sir Walter did we would be incredibly lucky. A great man. I met him twice, only in passing, once as a wee boy and once as a 20yr old. He just had an air of friendliness but also strength and professionalism. I rarely am affected by the passing of a public figure.... but this one hurts. My deepest condolences to his friends, family and loved ones. edit: Thanks to Ally for having the strength to be there and speak for us all today.

Made every gers supporter feel like we knew him personally, a man that loved our club & fact that celtic supporters appreciated him shows he didn't buy into the bitterness side of it at all. Early 90s with him in charge, we were best in Britain & then on 2nd coming got us to eufa final..love respect & forever thankful to a true legend🇬🇧👏

You can hear the real rawness of emotion and grief in Allys voice talking about his manager, friend and father figure Walter....it is heartbreaking yet heartwarming at the same time. It's been said the true worth of a person's legacy isn't based on achievements alone, but how people speak of their character and personality. The reverence Walter is spoken about here by Ally is a true testament to the man. Rest in peace Walter Smith.

From Dublin, Ireland, not a Rangers fan have a soft spot for Celtic but i always liked Walter Smith when iheard him speak. Came across as a gentleman, softly spoken, calm and measured. The type of man you just know you would have enjoyed working for. I was little shocked by the news as 73 is young enough these days. But none of us know when our short journeys in this world are going to end. R.I.P Walter. Rest well big man.
