Same does my mother who was a little child back then. And tells how the soldiers played with the kids, and nicely asked when they needed something. This is what true liberation looks like. Eastern Europeans who were "liberated" by the Soviet counterpart were less fortunate. Sounds familiar, looking at Ukraine.
My great grandfather defended Sicilia, and told a story where as him and other Italiano soldiers waited in a trench, a fight broke out between the Anti-Tank gun crew who wanted to surrender and the infantry who wanted to keep fighting.

My great-grandfather was in the Italian Navy during the war (they even gave him a medal for surviving a sinking), he was not in Sicily but was stationed at the naval base of Taranto and when the English invaded he was taken prisoner, but luckily the surrender agreement between the Allies and the Marshal Badoglio prevented him from being taken into captivity in England, instead he and his men were put to guard a fuel depot that the English had built in the port of Taranto. My other great grandfather (who was about 21 years old at the time) however was stationed in Greece in a coastal artillery unit. But after 8 September 1943, his commander ordered my great-grandfather and his comrades to escape and he first went up the Balkans, then crossed the Alps and crossed the entire Republic of Salò, finally reaching Naples (from where in the meantime the Germans had retreated) and he was reunited with his family. And as far as I'm concerned he made the right choice, after all he was still young and this was no longer his war.
Liddle Hart observed that Kesserling was really happy that the Allied never tried to trap the Axis' troops in Sicily. Because he did not have enough soldiers to defend the Calabria.
Outstanding

My father took part in the psychological warfare as a non-combattant. He never got over his love for Italy and Italians.
Epic video of Carthage winning the 1°Punnic War.
The problem in Sicily was that many axis forces could get back to Italy bia the strait. 0:50 This happened because of USA general Patton🇺🇲 rivalry against Brittish general Montgomery🇬🇧. They viewed Sicily more as a race to capture the important cities instead of securing the island and trap as many axis armies as they could. Finally, this problem lead, I'm sure, to a harder advance in Italy with the Axis reinforcing their defensive lines: Gothic and Gustav

Monty did took the road that Patton's Army was supposed to used to get to Messina. You can actually see it on the map when the British sector moved westward just a bit. While that doesn't sound like a big deal, note that Sicily is a mountainous island and roads are required for tanks to move forward.

@@tomterry2139 Highly unlikely given the God-awful terrain of Italy. Very mountainous, with long, winding roads, solid stone buildings and many, many rivers to cross. The terrain was a Tank's worst nightmare and couple that with the weather as well. Come Winter, it rains and rains a lot, bogging everything down and flooding said rivers. It's partly why Germany was able to hold on so well for so long, it's perfect Defensive terrain. Solid weight in numbers and material is what would and did win it for the Allies.

because it had little impact on the war. Ultimately the invasion of Italy was an incredible grind.
