The die shims was ingenious. They make auto headspace, cbot, seating depth etc. I think you got a winning idea if they were produced for all ammo cases and all bullet grains that can be fired out of a particular firearm!

Good info. I’ll check out the other videos. I did 42gn with my 6” and the flash and felt concussion was brutal! I chose 2400 to see about some “plinker “ ammo with berry 350gn plated. 42 is too hot for that purpose imho. I’ll try some 80% next. Thanks.

Hello Gavin, your videos are super informative, question. I have preloaded 300 rounds and shot them, of course I have reused same cases. My loads always 330 grn cast bullet with 14 gens TB. 330 grn reneer fmj 35 gn H110 last week I had one primer delay I have it on slowmotiin vid and one squib both with H110 was it bad primers what do you think. I have 15 rounds from same batch left should I take them apart? Thank you very much for your time.

Gavintoobe awesome video. Quick question do you ever trim 500 s&w brass for reloading? I know you’re supposed to trim rifle brass only, just wondering if you’ve ever had some cases that needed trimming.

Thanks for posting this. Have you used any H4227 or VV N120 in this? I am considering the Alliant 2400 for my S&W .500 (Performance Center 7.5" bbl). Initially I decided to go with Hodgdon Lil'Gun because I already have some of that for the .357 S&W and .450 Bushmaster. The manuals all show great velocity for the Winchester 296 / Hodgdon 110 (same powder) as well, but there are a lot of examples of that powder causing premature erosion to the top strap, especially in full throttle charges with light bullets.

Gavin, Have you reloaded Ranier 335 gr. Trying to use a roll crimp and bullet is creeping out of the case. Still working on tighter crimps to make sure I don't over crimp and get it to stay in the case. Using Aliant 2400 with 335 gr Ranier plated bullets. Thanks!

Just curious, your load of 40grs. Federal Large Rifle 210 primer, Alliant 2400 is 1686fps avg. Alliant says 42grs. Federal 215 primer, Alliant 2400 should be 1642fps? Do you think the fps difference is in primers? Love your channel. Thanks

How do you attain the most accurate round? What actually determains the greatest accuracy of a particular bullet load? The type of powder used? The amount used?

  • @adamhymas4620

It is a combination of what the gun prefers, barrel quality, bullet quality and reload consistency. There is no rule about which load is most accurate, but barrel quality can't be over-stated. 10 hunting rifles will shoot 10 loads very differently. If the competitive world where most people shoot custom barrels you will see most of the top competitors shooting just a few different bullets and powders.

gavintoobe it is a fine grain nice metering dense powder that covers a wide range of magnum pistol loads and harder shotgun field loads . If you're wanting high velocity slugs and buckshot and you actually want to load the fit in the shell , longshot seems to be the data that actually works . It's frustrating to me how many of the published loads don't really fit in the shell with reasonable compression on the wad.

Of the powders I tried in the 460, for me Lomgshot gave best accuracy with cast bullets at full power loads. I think it would be worth trying with the 500

Why do the reduced power loads create more carbon fouling?

  • @theeasternfront6436

David Goldberg The powder burns less efficiently. Reduce the charge enough and you will start to find granules of powder still stuck in the case.

The more pressure you create the better the powder will burn (and faster). So by having less powder you reduce the pressures therebye the speed and force of burning and usually all the powder doesnt burn be4 the bullet leaves the barrel.

LA K, I have been told the Winchester 296 / Hodgdon 110 (same powder) can cause premature erosion to the top strap, especially in full throttle charges with light bullets. Have you experienced this?

  • @lakiraly

I find the 296 and 110 to be of different consistency and also group differently. I have never found an erosion problem and have been using those powders since the 1980's.

Not a believer in watered-down loads. More accurately, as a handloader I'm adamantly opposed to it! If I buy 500 S&W, I want to shoot 500 S&W loads, not 85% of 500 S&W. Why risk something like a stuck bullet in the barrel? Or worse, a possible blow up because the intended cartridge for the gun was not used. Guys buy these big bore revolvers then after shooting them, they're scared of them. Sell it! The answer isn't in concocting kickless cartridges. Buy a revolver that allows you to shoot lower velocity cartridges, like the 460 S&W, if you don't know what you're getting yourself into.

2400 is only good as long as you load full magnum loads only. Lighter loads create unburnt powder. If you want a lighter load use a faster burning powder.

I'm confused. 95%, 80%, 70% of what level? The amount where you stopped because the brass was sticking, some published level, or what? Why not just give some useful data, like charge weight? I can't set my powder throw to a per cent!
