When I first moved here ten years ago it was nice and quiet, originally from NY that was a blessing. Then it went downhill. I want to sell and go somewhere else. I was hoping with the new remodelization of the downtown area it would get better but it didn't. My area is not so great but there are other areas that are really nice.

It went downhill since the late 1980's. It was a really cool town to live and have a family. That Hockey rink was suppose to change the city? Yea what a joke that is on the corner.

The demise of Bethlehem steel and the introduction of section 8 housing has caused a steep rise in crime in allentown that keeps going up since the 80s. I love allentown but the cities full of imported drug gangs from New York and philly. And the pagans and other 1%ers are just the cherry on top of the meth selling hillbilly gangs in the state belt and allsntowns suburbs

O yes you mentioned so many great things. I get selling points of crime, gangs, shootings, slums, and just some real bad and unsafe areas are not something you want to mention. Allentown is nice during the day but at night forget it. Not a great place to live only if u live in the high end parts.

I left good ole Allentown in 2010 and I miss it terribly the southern states just don't compare to the north alot has been built for the better since I left.

There's a lot of crackheads and beggars but I wouldn't say it's dangerous. The west end is the nicest part of Allentown. From 18th and up.

There are a lot of Latinos in town. I know some of them. There is crime in those same areas, but also a lot of really good, warm, and fun people. Mostly Puerto Rican and Dominican. There are less Latinos as you go west, but I think you will find that most of those people are very welcoming as well. But if you want to be around more Latinos, then within the city is where you will find most. If you like to walk in parks and trails this area has a whole lot all over. Even in the inner city you can go down to the canal and walk to Bethlehem and further! There is also the Parkway which is really nice. And more. Lots of nice places to walk and relax. Outside of Allentown I think you will find that the countryside is beautiful as well. I really love the countryside in PA.

Might consider Reading in that there's considerable Latino presence with bodegas, but the town has some chronic problems similar to other rust-belt cities.

Don't go there. The cost of living is to high, unless you are from New York where the cost of living is even higher.

Would have been nice to show some of the residential neighborhoods. You get a better sense of the city that way.

@@RedHeadAgent remember driving through Allentown and Bethlehem about 40 years ago traveling from Pittsburgh to NYC. But that was when industries were closing down and unemployment was high. Things looked pretty gritty back then in many cites and towns in PA.. Would be nice to see how residential neighborhoods in Allentown and Bethlehem have been revitalized since then.

Gentrified? Gentrified means wealthy people going into poorer places, raising prices, and as a result making it harder or impossible for the poorer people who were there first to afford to live. I've lived in Allentown since I was two and a half. I'm 53 now. That is how I know you have this *completely backwards*. Practically all of Allentown used to be a pleasant place to live. Notice, I say, "pleasant", not rich. Simple, decent working class people, with middle class people more towards the west, and the richer people further west. What has been taking over is not gentrification, but crime. Crime is what has been slowly taking over Allentown. It started in just a tiny few streets downtown, and has been spreading further and further west as time goes on. So don't give people this crap of a lie. I know you were indoctrinated in school to think everything is about gentrification, racism, etc. But you are not even being accurate here. You are ignorant at best, lying at worst. And by the way, I said "crime", not race. So don't even try to make it about race. There are a lot of people who aren't white who are fine people. So don't even go there.

@@RedHeadAgent PBS-Lehigh Valley did a doc about the demise of the steel industry. Turns out it happened when Bethlehem lost the contract for the WTC because its overhead was too high.

@@RedHeadAgent Allentown and all of the Lehigh valley and the surrounding areas is filled with parks and trails. Look that up. They are all over. Anywhere from small places to sit, to places where you can walk all day and not be done (like the canal path). And the Parkway (has a lot of space and trails) and is very accessible from in town. Just all over.

Allentown is a great place. Just don't live in Allentown. Good luck!

So thinking of moving to Allentown. I am currently in Az and want a change from this terrible heat. How are the schools there? How is prices for homes rent or otherwise? Are there things for young adults as well as small children besides what you have shown?

The rental market is very busy as are home sales. There are lots of things to do in Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton and all of the other small towns throughout the Lehigh Valley.

I live in Allentown and honestly the schools are kinda bad, I'd recommend moving to the suburbs like Whitehall, Emmaus, etc. Bethlehem is good if you still want city life but I'm not sure about the schools. Also even though people diss on Allentown for crime I've lived in South Allentown my entire life (Well almost, I moved here when i was 4) and I was never a victim of crime, I think most crime is really only by downtown

Allentown, a great place to live if you got money. The lady in the video didn't tell you the cost of living there i very, very high and housing and houses cost 2 to 3 times as much than most places in the entire state of Pennsylvania. I now live in Ephrata pa. I will never again go back to Allentown, ever. Everyone and everything is a rip off and the city is built on greed. Lady in the video, you can keep it...

Allentown Pennsylvania is a nice place to live if you got money. I met and lived with a girl from Allentown and i couldn't believe how high the cost of living is. We were paying $ 800 a month for a run down apartment in Allentown. Enough is enough i told her and i moved her to Leesport Pennsylvania, just north of Reading Pennsylvania, where i was from. We got a very beautiful apartment with off street parking and all for $600 a month. That beautiful apartment in Leesport would have cost us $1100 in Allentown, if not more. I saw houses for sale in Allentown for $800,000 to a million dollars that would go for $200,000 to $400,000 in the Reading area. Yeah you can keep Allentown. I'll never go back there to live. I don't even go to Dorney park anyone. It's all to expensive. How greed prevails there. I now live in Ephrata Pennsylvania and it's even cheaper. I pay $1200 a mont for a beautiful full house. Im sure I would pay double that for the same house in Allentown. Trust me Allentown ain't all that.

@@carlsmith5545 No argument. Living expenses have risen all over the Lehigh Valley. It is what it is. Just because it may be more expensive to live here than in other parts of PA - it DOESN'T make it a bad place to live. I really enjoy living here and I want to tell everyone that I think it's a great place to live.

Funny how all these people who have never been outside of Allentown or don’t even live in the city limits love to say how bad it is here. They never been to a real bad neighborhood before

What you might not realise is that Allentown used to be very low crime. So when you live here all your life and you see crime going up and up every year it's very depressing. I think that's the point.

Haha I am really. I think it depends how comfortable you are with the surrounding people. In my opinion I think most crime is drug related or people fighting people they already had problems with. Never really hear of randoms.. at least I haven't.

Allentown is not a good place to live by any stretch of the imagination. Have had my property violated yearly via car break ins, and some teenagers broke a window with a rock in an attempt to hit my cat. They asked my cat what she was looking at. Never move here if you can afford to live somewhere else. The people here do not care about where they live. Edit: im not far from the farmers market.

On top of that the house im in now, before moving in, was almost burnt down by junkies. Its a row home with families next door. If you care about your family do not move here .

Where? I used to live on Chew just a block or two from 17th (towards the hospital, not the other way towards Muhlenberg College). We used to take walks outside at night around there and over to the little park (the one surrounded by Linden, Turner, 17th and 16th -or is it 16th and 15th?) and feel safe-well, at least with a guy, but a small guy. That was around 1990. Nowadays, even there I can see the change. And the park at night? Not good. But, jeeze! Every year? So sorry.
