Allan Bloom: How Universities are Failing to Educate Students

"Students in our best universities do not believe in anything, and those universities are doing nothing about it, nor can they." That's how Allan Bloom begins his 1982 essay on "Our Listless Universities," an analysis of the crisis of higher education that he expands in his famous book The Closing of the American Mind. In this video, I read and comment on Bloom's essay. The universities are still in a crisis. That's why there's a Millerman School (MillermanSchool.com).

39:42 - Nuclear Family - the nuclear family itself is a psyop, it was part of the suburbanization process and was designed to atomize the traditional family & reduce the number of children families could have to only two or three. without the nuclear family model, we would not have the gross institutions of child daycare or of old folks homes aka elderly living facilities. breaking up the traditional family aka the multi-generational family structure made it difficult for a couple to have lots of children, encouraged mothers to enter the workforce once the few kids entered public schools, and left other previously dependant family members out on their own, as there's no room for an extended family member to live under the roof of the nuclear family. this led to the need for the state & NGOs to pick up the slack, and to create welfare programs & care facilities which makes a huge swaft of people reliant upon them, where previously the larger traditional family would've been caring for them. i rarely ever hear anyone who's right-leaning talk about this issue, but i hear lots of them decrying 'the left is trying to destroy our nuclear families'. they constantly conflate the nuclear with the traditional family, its as if they dont even know the difference & have never considered how ODD the term NUCLEAR Family is. we used to have mostly self-reliant communities that were fairly independent of the state, communities that could 'hold their own', communities that were made of LARGE healthy trad./multi-generational families. this is the model that allowed us to not be dependent on the state & the corporations that own our politicians. resetting the structure of the traditional family with the nuclear family was the trick needed to bring about this current state of our modern society's dependency on the state. ...assuring their hold over us & our willingness to protect this regime at all costs. destroying the middle class in the West, as we hear claimed, is not so much about taking away our financial wealth, as it is about removing our ability to possess the wealth of large healthy families, which is the foundation of mostly independent self-reliant communities. --the type that can answer under duress, 'we can make it just fine without you!' - that is a measure of true wealth. so, it is frustrating to hear the 'right' not explain this & to constantly conflate those two family structures when they are so different from each other.

28:52 - loss of interest in books and television & music - right-leaning people also dont seem to understand & refuse to contemplate how nefarious the Entire Entertainment Industry is, even though they talk about the different programs involving the infiltration & subversion of the CIA & of the Tavistock Insitute in various art & music genres. they wont consider that many aspects of entertainment (art, music, plays, magazines, television, standup comedy, sports, movies & music videos, etc) were not 'infiltrated' by these destructive groups, but were actually CREATED by them. they dont want to carry ideas & projects that they themselves have described to their natural conclusions, or to backtrack that same subversive activity to the beginning or creation of these different forms of entertainment. i believe they ignore how pervasive propaganda & mind control is in the Entire Entertainment Industry because they (right-leaning people) are not willing to turn away from or to give up entertainment. they dont mind endlessly complaining about it, but they refuse to turn their back on it. ...to sacrifice time-waisting subversive entertainment for the bigger picture. they dont want to sacrifice, to grow up, to be serious, to be stoic, and to set a strong example, because they like having their subconscious toyed with, they like emoting & becoming feminized, like the women they decry, they are unwilling to give up their self-serving addictions, even though it leads to their own corruption. and American families are so broken & detached from each other, that to understand the difference between Nuclear & Traditional Families is something else right-leaners dont want to do, because they'd probably cringe at the thought of living in the same space with or even proximity of their grandparents, or aunts, uncles or cousins. they mock anyone who lives with their parents, & call single celibate people virgins as a cutdown, even though these people have stated that they're waiting to get married before having sex. ---these various online celebrities mock, hate & even cheer on 'the day of the pillow' for boomers, claiming that boomers refused to sacrifice for their children & grandchildren, which is a real thing, however, these same people have a very similar mindset & behavior, even if it's about different topics. not only have the Germans been successfully "de-nazified", but that program, on steroids, has been inflicted on ALL of the West, it is mostly welcomed, and it is disheartening to witness. i believe short of a cataclysm, our society will be marched into this new reset we've heard so much about, as we are so consumed with things that don't really matter, ignoring infrastructure, policies & programs that are being installed. and no one on the so-called Right is properly talking about any of it (the new models of transforming health, education, employment & global economics), "the-left-left-me" people are the only ones doing the work of studying & explaining the new highly complex & technical social & economic models that are coming into play. even the people that luv conspiracy theories arent talking about this upcoming digital age that the controllers are openly describing, probably because they're looking in the wrong direction, and because being able to understand & articulate these new systems is very difficult because it entails a ton of extremely complicated terminology, concepts & technology. i've heard these progressives, "the-left-left-me" people, describe these new tech models as colonization, not for a nation, but colonization of the mind & of human biology, and with the aim of capturing the human soul. all to feed the human-ant-computer, the all-encompassing global AI project. not a depopulation process, but an energetic capture of the mind, body & spirit, to direct thoughts & behaviors into the data feed designed for AI's consumption and learning. too bad the 'right' is not paying attention to this, seems like they're always caught up in the newest psyop to keep them distracted. the left doesnt want to hear it as they're programmed to protect the regime, & this is a regime project. seems like tons of people know things are going wrong, but people seem incapable of thinking clearly.

@@barb2793 We find better news in our DATA on the entertainment industry. There is no more "popular culture" in the USA. Movie attendance peaked in 1933 and then steadily declined into the 1960's. According to TV Guide data, the most popular hours of post-WW2 3-channel Boomer kid TV aired in the 1950's, 60's and early 70's. Then declined. Cable-TV segmented the TV audience. TV shows ceased simulating a "shared experience." Last year, 20,000 US households canceled their cable TV bills for good. Not people moving.. Net losses. Now over any given week, fewer than 1% of Americans watch the #1 "most popular" cable-TV channel. A tiny number. About 0.6% of Americans. All the other channels get even tinier audiences. Our so-called "pop music" was TV music. Now the entire Billboard Top-200 Singles list accounts for less than 5% of US streaming music. As I said, there is no more "popular culture" in the USA. Without TV viewers, TV brands are dying off. Now 65% of Americans never drink soda-pop. Not regular. Not diet. No flavors. No brands. The Net is international, narrowcast, long form, bidirectional and completely different. As for Left/Right, I highly recommend searching for "Lewis Myth of Left and Right" and watching interviews with the authors of their book.

Bloom is more impolite than Strauss, that’s for sure. The way all the contemporary tropes and symbols roll off Michael’s tongue is impressive. In Nabokov’s sci fi novel Bend Sinister the party of truth has taken over but they have some hesitation at forcing one of their university’s world renown scholars to conform and submit to the regime. The professor’s works, however, are long dissertations on obscure and trivial matter so noncommittal that he could easily proclaim his loyalty to the regime without much declaiming his previous publications. ‘not having to sign anything he didn’t write’ is the principle point of freethinking he defends but his main concern is getting his only son out of the country. Seems like a hypothetical case not without some pertinence to this discussion. Whatever doubts that Bloom’s certainty raised in my mind, I’m very drawn to the idea of THE truth which Strauss advises us not to dismiss as good for that time, benighted, known better by those who have listened but not heard and all the other excuses for dismissing critical thinkers with stereotypes and other specious representations. 19:35

Sad part Is many of our early 1900s ancestor immigrants during mass displacement of Europe and abroad enter American complexity and its very foreign to them and they get it wrong at first. They bring all they know from the old world and confuse the situation. I'd love to point to phylosphy and say it was some walk through Time but really it just comes with lots of European family that didn't have patience for things like allowing the first generation born after the Civil War to naturally & organically adjust over time. In many of the vulnerabilities that woke has adopted or inherited it truly began between nuenced denominational desputes, petty grand unified theory of everything movement that piggyback & partnership with anthrosphy & theosaphy wouldn't stop to consider how dangerous modeling anthromorphized astronomy and geology with mechanized biology while one day building out agency in computation would come and with us projecting all these human qualities back into nature without all other attempts it could be a trainwreck. Look at population species our mist taught orderingandcategorizing foundationap skills , the slightest variation taken to the extreme and experts talk past one another .take it to the extremes and Germans view jews as a completely different species. It's like the nfl draft this week, every fan says this Is a playoff roster on paper but once you put it in excersize it fails. The hypersplitting nihilism takes no time to show up in practice. Like woke gender copys A monarch who skipped direct reproduction by measuring divine right blood in nephews and woke measuring harmons for 72 genders or melanin in skin as if a race is a completely different species

Don't miss the point of the reading. It is about what constitutes a genuine education, and what characterizes the intellectual and moral tendencies of professors and students in an environment that no longer takes seriously the possibility or desirability of the search for wisdom through the study of books. Then you would have to connect that observation to the question of "civic engagement" - of what is civility, civilization, the city, and the citizen.
