When my husband and I first started dating he said he was allergic to cats; I told him the cat was here first... He started taking antihistamine everyday, 8 years later we are all still together. The cat and I decided to keep him.

Love your firm response. As a former volunteer in a cat sanctuary, I've seen quite a number of women (sorry, "spineless" women) who for the hopes of being married, would forsake their feline companions. Who knows, if they could abandon their feline friends for the sake of promised marriages by these men, what's not to say that these same men may not desert them in the future or near future. Good for you to stand firm. So VERY HAPPY that you are a wonderful family TOGETHER! Cheers!

Yeah, I had the pretty much same conversation with my now husband on the first date. "I have a cat, and we're a baggage deal, no discussion." I think my cat decided to keep him before I did :D I'm actually allergic myself, but it's just something I choohe to live with. I'll trade some sneezing and stuffed nose for a life with cats any time. It's totally worth it.

When I first started fostering cats, I was horribly allergic. So much sneezing, congestion, and itchiness. But after a few weeks and daily antihistamines, my symptoms subsided. I eventually forgot to take the allergy medicine and I didn't have any allergic reaction at all. I'm so happy!

That's how allergy shots work too... regular exposure to the allergen can actually desensitize the immune system so the mast cells are no longer releasing histamine or at least less. Doesn't work for everyone. Possibly why children who grow up with pets have lower rates of allergies and asthma as well.

I did the same thing. Used to be allergic so bad I'd puff up whenever I was near a cat. (Like my face would literally get all red and puffy) As well as the usual sneezing/coughing, etc. I wanted cats again so bad. I didn't care. When my parents finally got me a kitten, we went to the drug store, got me an antihistamine and. . .I still take them daily, all these years later. I actually found that after living with one cat for a couple of weeks. . .I stopped reacting to it. I'd go through a period of misery, then it'd just stop and the rest of the cat's life I was fine. Sort of like I built up an immunity to MY particular cats. I still have to take the antihistamines, mind you, but that's as much for outdoor allergies as indoor ones now. Seemed fair to me!

Sadly, not everyone's allergies can be reasonably managed by "putting up with it" or taking antihistamines daily year round. 😔 And unfortunately, sometimes people suddenly develop allergies to animals in adulthood. ☹️ - My partner did after we got together and now I don't know if I'll ever be able to have pets, even though I desperately want to have a dog and a cat. ☹️ - My partner gets affected by antihistamines in such a way, that he wouldn't be able to do his job or live a normal life AND even on them, after a few weeks around animals, his lungs fill up with mucus to the point he can't breath. 😥 I want him to try immunotherapy, but we'd have to get it privately, so it'd cost *a lot* AND even though it works for some people, the success rate is fairly low overall.. 😔

I'm severely allergic to cats and my Siberian cat Stormageddon is a dream come true for me. I had allergy shots when I was in high school, which helped somewhat, but I still can't be around most cats for more than a few hours. I'm on an inhaled steroid for my asthma and a nose spray and that takes care of any symptoms Stormy causes. It's true that there is no such thing as a pefectly allergy free cat. Still, compared to most cats, Siberians produce a lower level of Fel D1, the protein that causes most cat allergies. Stormy's breeders understood that there is no way to garuntee that a kitten wouldn't aggravate my allergies and did everything they could to make sure Stormy and I were a good fit. They let me spend time with Stormy's parents before I put down a deposit. When they didn't bother my allergies at all I was pretty confident it would work out. Just in case, we had an agreement that if my allergies turned out to be a problem (which takes at most a few days to notice) I would return her to the breeders to be rehomed with the next person/family on their waiting list. Thankfully that wasn't necessary and today I can (and do) stuff my face in her voluminous fluff and it doesn't aggravate my allergies at all! As a child I thought I would never be able to live with a cat and it broke my heart. I am so grateful to have her in my life. Of course I support giving a home to a shelter cat before buying a purebred, but for me living with a rescue cat isn't possible. Living with a Siberian is.

Rescue if you can but stop trying to shame people that just want to live with a cat and not die.

One BIG thing he missed is that some people may think their allergic to cats are really allergic to the dust in the cat litter, changing to a pine pellet (plus many other options) for example changes things overnight. Aside from that this is good for someone who thinks their allergic to cats can get some answers from. I can’t imagine ever rehoming a cat unless it was unnecessarily violent. People should expose themselves to a cat before getting one to know ahead of time what the potential cat owner is getting themselves into!

That could be my problem since I seem to get allergies around cats when I’m in someone’s house with them. But one time in college, I remember one of my professors brought her cat to show us one day. I was only around the cat for a few minutes and got an unbearably non-stop itchy nose. That cat was super furry though, so maybe it was just that certain type?

My daughter loves cats and she pet every stray cat that would let her, and if we visited someone with cats, she spent hours playing with the cats. Never had an allergic reaction. We thought we were good so we got a cat. Now we are 3 weeks in as cat owners... And bam, my daughter got allergy symptoms. We will try everything first coz we really want to keep our cat, she i sweetheart, s a wonderful kitten with the sweetest personality. But if it comes to worst scenario, we do have an option of returning the cat, coz the person we adopted the cat from, said that he will take the cat back and help rehome it in case of allergies. But first to the doctors, washing all bedding, vacuum.... And we are lucky in a way that we still haven't introduced the cat to our daughters bedroom, so we can keep that a cat free room. Also, if we open all the windows in the apartment, the breeze always starts in my daughters bedroom and goes to the other rooms and never the other way round, so that will prevent the dander from ever been blown into her room from the other rooms. The sad part is, now my daughter will have to sleep in her own room, coz lately she has been sleeping with me in my bed. So yeah, wish us luck and hope we can come overcome this without rehoming or kitten.

But I adored my neighbours cats too much and came home a weezy, itching mess constantly. Almost 30 now and a close friend has two cats who also just adore being close to people. But as an adult, somehow my allergies have subsided and it’s just the sneezing and nose problems that can be taken care of with antihistamines. I began to take generic Zyrtec (Cetirizine) for general seasonal allergies and found that it did not make me drowsy. I also began to take prescribed eye drops (Epinastine) for the same reason, completely unrelated to cat allergies. The eye drops helped me not get allergies while wearing contacts. Much to my surprise, after a a life of bing allergic to cats, I realized that I was having no reaction to them. I gradually exposed myself more to them, and the final test was staying a week in my friend's very small city apartment with his two male Tabby cats, which were the cats I was always the most allergic to. Not a single symptom and I would up adopting my current pair shortly after. Modern allergy meds are amazing but definitely do a test run before adopting a cat.

In Sweden the Siberian Cat Association provides Allergy Test Homes for anyone who's looking into buying a Siberian Cat. You pay a small fee of 5€, which goes to helping out cat owners that find it difficult to provide for their cats, and you go to a private Siberian cat owner and play with their cat. I went to one recently, and they were actually Siberian cat breeders, so got to play with 4 cats of different ages to test my allergy. They suggest going to 4 test homes to really get a grasp on your allergy, since all cats produce different amounts of protein. Hoping to get one next year 🤩🤩

It's not a breeding organisation, it's an association that keeps tabs on all Siberian cat owners in the country (if they are part of it) Think of it as a protective association for this specific breed of cat :D They also give a lot of info on the breed and help with questions about the breed, as well as provide Allergy test homes so people can test their allergies I do hope this kicks off in other countries so that people can test their allergies 💪🏻

Long haired cats still bother me and I’m in my 50s. We have 2 cats. They don’t bother me at all. They are Siamese and a ragdoll. 🤷‍♀️ So, it really can be down to just a cat, it doesn’t mean all cats.

I discovered my allergies after I adopted my cat, Leo. The possibility of returning an adoptee is not an option in my mind, so I lived on antihistamines for many years (and i'm asmatic). I discovered that when I bathed him, I had no problems with him. Didn't do it often though, but I realized the cat per se was not the problem. I honestly thought it was dust mites, as I also had allergic reactions to my moms dog when she wasn't bathed for a long time. By the time my cat passed away, though, (10 years later) my immune system had gotten used to him and my allergies were better. With my current cat, I've had no problem. I can bury my head un her long fur without problem.

I went to my GP to ask what I could do. He told me, get a cat. He advised that I get a kitten because they don't produce that protein as much as older cats. That way I would build up my immunity. It worked. I have no more trouble around cats or at least not as bad. I do have antihistamines in case.

Hi, love your videos and more importantly I understand what you explain and can relate. We have adopted a beautiful and kind Rex Cornish about 4 years ago. I fell in love with Prunelle on sight. I was anxious and depressed and she needed some overdue TLC. She will be 9 years old soon and her breeder used her to sell babies. She was in bad shape but under the care of a Veterinary Clinic who also ran an adoption agency. She was skinny, had to have her shots and had 8 teeth removed. Being sensitive and hyperreactive, I spent some time with her when we met and she immediately went into my coat searching for warmth and comfort. She purred her way into my heart. My friend bought her to help me with my anxiety. We immediately became best buds. She adapted really well with us but she has coughing attacks that make me think she has some pulmonary issues. The vet did tell us that she has a small heart murmur. She is very social and talks to me a lot. She is like a small chihuahua but in a beautiful fierce mommy of a cat. She is very protective and is shy around man until you show her love. I'm retired and have a limited budget. Worried about these attacks which happens mostly at the end of the day, I took her to a new vet close to where I live. She prescribed some anti inflammatory treatment that helped but did not sole the issue. The vet said they needed to do a series of XRays that are quite expensive. She is hard to video when she has these attacks but it like a hacking "I have a fur ball that's stuck" kind of thing. When it's over, she shakes her head and breathes normally. She's on dry food, she drinks out of the tap, but I always put fresh water in her bowl and I supplement with a few spoons of wet natural cat food. I noticed she really likes eating what I eat...especially chicken, fish, veggies as long as it's easy to swallow. Thank you for reading this message and I would love to have your thoughts on what I ca do to make her life better. I luv her to the moon.

I'm fairly certain that one can build up 'immunities' to cats (and possibly dogs too. Though I didn't have any reaction at all when I got my dog, thankfully. I almost always get a reaction to a new cat.). Whenever we get a new cat (or I'm exposed to a new cat. I mean, not like I run out getting a new cat every week. heh But we have had a bit of a turn-over in the last several years due to one of our cats having sudden heart-failure.) I go through a totally miserable few weeks. Even taking antihistamines, it can be quite miserable. Then suddenly, after 2-3 weeks, the reaction to the cat - or cats - will just disappear and I won't have a problem with them again. I'd guess maybe your situation is similar. Being away from them, maybe you lost your 'immunity' and will have to be exposed for a bit to regain it. Won't be fun, but it's doable. I also think stress/other immune lowering events can make one 'sort of' allergic. My mom has never been allergic to cats all her life, and in recent years (since things have been SUPER stressful) has experienced a similar issue. Get a new cat, spend a few miserable weeks being 'allergic', then it suddenly clears up and no further reactions. Its odd, but better than being stuck with it!

I'm allergic to my black cat Poe but not my orange one, Willow. My allergies only act up maybe 2-3 months a year, and at first I thought I was crazy. I've had them both for at least 3 years now, will never get rid of my baby because I love him. This video has helped so much, thank you! ❤

I got a cat even though I was allergic. From my experience, it only takes time to get use to them. If you start to have out of control allergies, just wash your face, and it’ll calm down and you’ll have less allergies from my experience. I’ve had my cat for a year now with no allergies. My allergies lasted about less than a month. edit: absolutely wont work for everybody especially those who have severe allergies and take this with a grain of salt cause i’m not a doctor

Lucky you! Also wearing an N95 mask while sleeping helps to give your body a rest from allergies. Rinsing out your nasal passages with a neti pot also helps to wash out any lingering allergens. Just don't do it before going to bed; wait at least an hour in an upright position to ensure your sinuses drain completely.

That won’t work for everyone, it’s caused by something in their saliva. It’s all going to depend on the severity of the allergy. If you’re really sensitive, your best bet is a cat that produces less FEL d1 and allergy shots. And allergies can lessen or worsen over time. Or even develop if you haven’t had allergies before

yea cat allergies and small animal allergies (same protein) are actually exposure based so the more exposure you get to them the worse your allergies get.

Half of my friends, my mother and myself are allergic to cats. I never knew, I'm allergic to cats until I moved out from home. Without the regular exposure I began to have symptoms (Mild ones that is. A runny nose and itching eyes). My physician confirmed the allergie. So I did the most rational thing. I went to our local shelter and asked if they were in need for help with the cats. Worked fine for me. My symptoms are gone except for when a cat scratches me. (Itching skin around the scratch). My mom and one of my friends are the same. No symptoms as long as cats are around on the regular base. But here is the thing: Three of my friend would die if getting exposed to the allergen. No coffing or sneezing there. Just choking right away. Even a trace amount is enough for one of them. Changing and showering is mandetory if I want to see her after I pet a cat. So please be real careful with the self-treatment via exposure.

Yup. When I was a preteen, they finally found out I had allergies the entire time (thought I was just getting sick a lot) and my parents told me we can either get rid of the cat, or I can get over my debilitating fear of needles to get allergy shots twice a week, for years. I did get shots less often as my immunity built up though. I went once a month towards the end. But I loved my cat, and was willing to face a HUGE fear of mine at a young age, for chessie ♥️ will always remember her. And now, my daughter is allergic and I gave her the same choice, except she can get by with a chewable everyday. (She hasn't developed the full montage of allergies that I had yet, no shots needed)

I was allergy tested and I’m allergic to both Cats and Dogs doesn’t keep me from having them when things get back to Normal I’m getting the shots. I have blinds, Hard wood floors and I thought I was the only one who cleaned my cats bed. I actually do all of the things you mentioned along with dusting the walls. Yes I dust the walls!

I have spent my whole life super super allergic to cats, but I love them SO MUCH. I finally gave in to my love of cats and started fostering rescue kittens, ending up keeping two as my forever-babies. My first couple months the allergies were pretty bad, even with daily antihistamines, but over time, I've either become used to the allergies and they don't bother me anymore OR my allergies have actually gotten better. A big tip from me is keeping the bedroom a no-cat zone! I keep the door closed and they know they're not allowed in so they wait outside. That way I know my bed is always as allergen-free as I can get it! Thanks Jackson, really great video - didn't know urine also carried the protein!

4:08 glad it worked for you but my allergist told me that it would take no less than two years, is EXTREMELY expensive and only has a possible 50% success rate. And yes, I am a 4 on the scale of 5 allergic to my cat's dander.

Oh god thanks, I just bought a cat, she scratched a liiiiil bit, and boom there is a reaction on my skin. Im pretty anxious by nature so I was afraid that I’ll need to rehome my cat, especially because I had asthma when I was younger. Seeing this gives me hope. Thaaaanks ❤😻

I’m allergic to cats but have lived with three that I’ve found that I’m mostly non-reactive to. I only start having allergies when I scoop the litter box or if I accidentally get scratched. My advice for finding a low-allergy cat: meet the cat and do a DIY allergy test. The allergens are in their saliva, so I wipe my inner wrist (a sensitive part of my skin) over the cat’s nose or try to get them to lick me. If I can’t get any saliva on my wrist then I try to rub it against their fur as much as possible, although that doesn’t work as well so you have to do it for longer. I’ll also try to hold them (if they allow it) against my chest/neck area (also sensitive skin). Then wait 15-20 minutes to let my body react, and if I’m allergic to the cat then I’ll start getting hives or red blotches. In my experience, Russian Blue and Siamese cats are great for allergies (both rescues, I’m assuming breed based on coloring. But genuinely, I’ve had good luck with every gray cat I’ve met). I also have a longhaired orange tabby who’s breed is entirely unknown but he’s great on my allergies.

Great job! Thank you!! I am allergic to the cat protein but alas over the pandemic we have seen 3 litters of kittens born to some stray girls than run around our neighborhood and I have taken one of their kittens in. I tried to save most of them and put them in homes but the mamas have been almost impossible to catch due to pandemic having closures on help orgs. and they are smart and refuse traps. The 13 week old living in my home with my husband and I now, we are so in love with and have invested a lot in him and keeping our home clean. We so want to keep him so we are trying all of this and more!
