I've thought about it with my partner, and I don't remember what our estimate was, but I could see it easily being in the thousands. According to his website, 33,248 people signed up to go vegan through Ed’s content in a 12 month period. Extrapolate that out to all the years he's been doing this, and then consider the number of people who went vegan but didn't sign up after seeing one of his talks, and then extrapolate for the millions of views on his videos, and I think the number starts to get pretty high. I don't have anything to back this up, but I wouldn't be surprised if Ed was the single best thing that ever happened to animals in recorded human history.

Going vegan didn't just make me more compassionate to animals, it made me more compassionate to humans, too. I used to throw litter out of my car, never recycled, just lived a very insular life. Now I pick up litter because I think of wildlife and our environment, and consider my effects in general in the world. Its changed me for the better in so many ways. It's the best thing I've ever done and I don't mind being a minority if I'm confident I do my best to be a positive influence in this world and align my morals with my actions.

Kinda the same way alcoholics “don’t drink that much” and smokers “only smoke once in a while.” Eating animal products these times per day, and typically more than one per meal, 365 days per year and in massive quantities on holidays, is not moderation in the slightest. I know this because I used to say the same shit, “I don’t every eat dairy!” Not realizing that I drank whey and casein shakes at least twice a day 😭

It should be normal for us to feel this way upset, angry and it’s traumatic. Its truly the biggest injustice with the vast amount of beings that have to go through this(including workers not the ones in joeys video). I worked as a government “welfare” inspector and in investigations. I’ve seen a lot of this which 99% of people will never unfortunately. I see a therapist who helps me with daily flashbacks and dealing, living in a world that isn’t awake YET! I’ve muted a lot of people on Instagram and other social platforms just because these videos tend to re-traumatize. Honestly we don’t need to see it all the time if we are for the animals. Loved this interview! Ed is an incredible debater. As for Jamie's question about insects versus livestock - as humans, frankly the best thing we could do for most other species is to end humankind. But of course we aren't going to do that - we are always going to prioritise ourselves - so you have to use that as a starting point. From this, we have decided to balance our domination with moral frameworks and we already show kindness, respect and a sense of justice to many species of animals. Veganism calls for this to be extended so that we end unnecessary suffering of all animals as far as is physically possible (i.e., so humans can still eat) which really isn't that radical. The roots of kindness and disdain for cruelty are already among us. Also - the argument of 'well bugs sometimes die when we grow vegetables, so therefore I'm going to continue to pay for cows to be slaughtered and put through violence I'd never be able to stand and watch' is worringly popular 😂

Ed is exactly right. When I was a talk show host and sponsored debates, it took me a while to realize to just shut up and listen. I gave them the driver's seat. I ask relevant questions and allow them to contemplate them. This is called the Socratic Method of argumentation and is very powerful. They feel more in control and are more apt to think reflectively as they feel that they are challenging their own thoughts rather than you challenging them aggressively. It works. Also the people that say "I kill this elk and eat it for a whole year" never mention the enormous electric bill required to refrigerate all that meat for the year to keep it edible. And before refrigeration the only way to store meat was to use huge amounts of salt. Compare this to storing potatoes, carrots, rice, beans which all just can be dried for a short time in the sun and stored for YEARS without any refrigeration. There's nothing natural about eating meat regularly and what hunters do is extremely artificial to anything humans have been doing in history.

Look up some stable isotope studies and realize human beings have been eating primarily meat for millions of years - how did they get that meat? They hunted - nothing artificial about it. And whenever someone mentions plant foods that are easily stored for years they don't mention the cost of shipping said plant products across the world - get off your high horse.

@raspberry No, because anyone who has actually cured meats knows only a moron would assume a lot of salt is used -- did you really think people would eat an excessively salty snack -- the reality is that to cure meats, you under salt them, because the drying process strips moisture, so something salty is going to become even more salty, to the point that it will not be enjoyable. Also your critique focused solely on the drying of meats by stripping moisture, or did you just assume that bottling, confit, ... were also heavy handed with salt? Point is the only thing your rant has proven is your ignorance.

Also mock meats are actually nicer tasting than actual meat so I can't see why anyone would choose to eat animals still when we have better alternatives literally if I ever went back to eating animal products I'd still eat mock meats that says it all

OK your friend desperately needs to supplement vitamin B12 and omega 3. I'm not being ignorant, I'm vegan myself. In this day and age, you cannot get enough B12 from diet alone as we have steralised the soil too much and the adequate bacteria and cobalt are not present in soil for there to be a reliable enough quantity of B12 to meet our needs. Even foods supplemented with B12 are not in such quantities to get enough every day. With omega 3, we need it from DHAs and EPAs, as well as ALAs. ALAs are present in various seeds and nuts, though DHAs and EPAs are present in algae and in small amounts in leafy greens (that's why fish have such high amounts, because they eat sea plants that have omega 3s). We really should be supplementing omega 3 FROM ALGAL OIL to get the DHAs and EPAs as well as the ALAs because the former two are very difficult to get from the plants we eat conventionally. It would be awesome if we didn't have to supplement and hopefully one day we won't have to, but things the way they are now, we (everyone, not just vegans) need to supplement certain nutrients.

One is a pet and the other will feed and nourish you - false equivalency. I didn't bring home a cat and spend money feeding it and taking it to a vet in order for it to feed me and nourish me - that is not his purpose in life - it's purpose is to keep me company. The purpose of the animals I eat is to feed and nourish me, not keep me company and bother me about getting let out in the middle of the night - so they are clearly not the same thing. Also, by your definition every human being who ever lived up until a few thousand years ago was psychotic - you owe your very life to their psychopathy because had they not killed animals the human race would've gone extinct.

  • @anthony3014

@@notyourdad Why do you think we have the right to decide the purpose of animals? They aren't ours, they are individuals experiencing life with their own sentience and the animals that humans have assigned to be killed never would choose that. We should always consider the victim's perspective right? I think you're right in that humans were not just all psychos killing animals in the past - it was to ensure our survival ensuring our species to continue. However even then I doubt people would have taken pleasure in the killing, it was out of necessity. That isn't the case now, and the mass suffering that is caused by human's selfish desires is is no way justifiable.

@@anthony3014 Nature decided that some animals are pray and others are predator. The literal purpose of pray on this planet is to be eaten by predators - I didn't invent this concept, evolution did. Predators eat pray in order to not only survive but also thrive. Humans are predators evolved to eat primarily meat as evidenced by stable isotope studies - this is irrefutable. Eating the species appropriate diet is what any species that wants to thrive ought to be doing. Leaving out the most nutritious food source on the planet which we are evolutionarily adapted to consume is ill-advised if one wants to thrive - do so at your own peril but do no suggest others should follow the same foolish advice because you are emotionally invested in an ideology. Nature and evolution and human physiology do not care about your feelings or those of any other animal.

I think a big hurdle for many might actually to be to learn to cook in new ways... If you are stressed out or lack the energy to shift your diet in one day I think a reasonable strategy is a more of a long-term plan. Look up a "easy to cook" vegan recipes once, twice, or three times a week, whatever feels good to you. Save the recipes you found being tasty, and do that for a couple of months. This will eventually lead you to having many tasty, easy to cook recipes or even new "cooking strategies". This lowers the threshold of becoming vegan substantially as you now actually start to know what you can eat instead of your meat focused recipés. When it comes to breakfast, I shifted mine from "three cheese sandwiches" to "overnight oats" (or "lazy oats" as I call it, as I only let mine rest for 15minutes). I have oats, chia seeds, flax seeds, sesame seeds, cinnamon, cardamom. soak in oatmilk and let it rest, top with finely sliced apple and roasted pumpkin seeds (I roast these myself and put in a jar for easy access). This right here! is a tasty, foody apple pie, it's VERY nutritious and tastes wonderful. Far better than the breakfasts I used to have. I've been vegan for 27 years. It's great that more and more people are starting to become much more open to the idea of causing less harm and suffering.
