My boyfriend (a broad shouldered 6'2 straight dude) paints his nails, wears make-up, dyes/straightens his hair, steals my sunnies/jewellery, and loves pink. Ever since meeting me (a pansexual woman) he's become "gayer" which translates as: more open and accepting of himself and realising that gender norms are fucking stupid. Now our favourite motos are: "Fuck heteronormativity!" and "we don't do gender in this house" and I couldn't be happier.

One or both must have turned our heads at the right time to make full lip contact when she went play offense while I had her teams jammer. The introduction wasn't much more than that, I was her "first derby kiss." I believe it was between jams, she came up and wanted to know my name. I'm a very awkward human, but honestly didn't think much of it if she hadn't enthusiastically shaken my hand with both of hers. I cannot tell you how many people I've accidentally licked or stuck my hand in an eye or mouth over the years. That’s good and all, I am glad you found a good therapist and I get that it can be hard to find one you mesh well with sometimes…however, who uses gendered pronouns while talking to someone while referring to the person that you’re talking to? That seems weird to me…I don’t want to be rude, I’m a little tired so I genuinely don’t know if I am being rude, but I also genuinely don’t understand. Is it normal to use someone’s preferred pronouns in a normal conversation? Cuz I’ve heard some people occasionally either be happy about someone using their preferred pronouns or upset someone blatantly ignored their preferred pronouns and I am so confused…

I read the book which plot takes place in the 1910s and my favorite thing is that the writer used ''gay'' as a synonymus for ''joyful'' and so I had those cute little sentences like ''the captain of the ship made sure all the passangers were comfortable and gay'' or ''all the women were very gay''. Safe to say it made the story ten times better - just a ship full of comfortable gays.

😆 Reading historical novels can definitely be an interesting experience, given how much language & attitudes have changed over the decades!! I'm glad you had a funny linguistic experience like that though, rather than one of those moments (more frequent in my experience?) where the author's internalised misogyny, queerphobia etc suddenly jumps off the page and smacks you in the face... 😒 If you're a fan of historical authors you do learn to expect those moments from time to time, but they're still not super fun? Makes it all the more enjoyable when you find an author (of any era!) who largely manages not to write any bigotry into their works... And definitely makes one look at modern writings a bit differently, and wonder which bits of our contemporary fiction might prove to be the "yikes" moments for readers in a future century! 🤭

@@orionishi6737 No. While I am atheist, in part due to the attitude of the church as a whole, as a former Lutheran Christian, I can say that church pastors are NOT only showing acceptance for the sake of keeping up a statistic. 'My' pastor has been proudly marrying gays for years, and is very accepting, and does her damn well best to learn about and understand people of all walks of life and fight discrimination of any kind. She's the reason I'm not completely against religion. Religion can have valuable moral lessons, provided it is untainted by bias, self-centered agendas, ignorance, stupidity, and ridiculous phobias. Some sects at least are good, those that care less about the "tradition" and ancient laws long since irrelevant, and rigid interpretation of the words written in the bible with no acknowledgement of the context and biases of the very flawed human writing it, but instead on how Jesus basically preached to love everyone. Period, full stop. He hung out with the outcasts, the 'unclean', the 'sinners', and accepted them. He taught to do good no matter what. And was rather inclusive. The problem is in the people manipulating and using religion to facilitate their own biases and reinforce their own power. The Catholic church has been a large example of this historically, people using religion to justify their bigotry and to destroy any dissent. But there has always also been the reasonable, moral, and ethical people practicing religion as well. It's just that the voice of evil is much louder than good, because evil is shameless, fearless, and malevolent. oops, sorry for the rant, I may have got a little off topic

I'm not defending this, but I think I got some insight in the thought process. Watching porn for many people has the key component of objectifying women (or sometimes other people, mostly women though). Since porn is inherently sexual they tend to associate that objectification of others with their own sexuality (at least when people don't properly question/reflect on the impact porn has on their opinions). Once someone has a strong association between those two concepts, they might jump to the conclusion that objectification is not only a part of their own sexuality, but of what they perceive to be a "normal" sexuality for people of their own gender and sexual orientation. Therefore whenever someone else rejects the attitude of objectification, they may come to the conclusion that since that person's attitude towards women doesn't reflect their own, that person's sexual orientation and/or gender must be different, or at least different enough to doubt it in the form of what they perceive to be an insult. I think that's pretty much it, or at least it's my best guess as to what is going on. Needless to say I find there to be multiple errors in every stage of that thought process. Treat women and people in general with respect, especially those working in fields that can lead to a lack of respect from others, don't insult people with different opinions and most importantly: be gay. Or at least don't use "gay" as an insult, that'll do for now.

We have somewhat of a religious and conservative culture, so it's seen as a sin to actually be gay and it's seen as an affront to god and nature to be trans. Luckily, the younger generations seem to be getting away from that way of thinking, though we have a ways to go. Look at bad bunny, he wears skirts and paints his nails, and wears heals even. He was raised in our puertorican culture. It's seen as a challenge to our gender norms, but also, it's just seen as fashion by most younger people and not necessarily tied to his sexuality.

That attitude of the young people in seeing such extremely non-traditional fashion choices as just being a personal preference (rather than as a prescribed indicator of sexuality or gender) sounds pretty amazing. Everyone has the right to maintain their appearance and bodily health without judgement from others about how they do it or the fact that they even do it in the first place. Let people be. That's so frustrating. Someone else looking after their own body in whatever ways they choose doesn't affect you and has nothing to do with you. Focus on yourself and leave other innocent people alone.

This is more than just a surface appearances problem too, unfortunately! 😕 I don't know about other countries, but here we've been dealing with multiple generations of guys who were bullied and socially-programmed to think that it was unmanly to try to stay safe at work (literally "sissy" to even use basic protective equipment) and positively gay to care about your medical health... As a result, a lot of guys died young or were permanently damaged in workplace accidents, and a lot more have passed away in later life due to things which would have been treatable if caught in time. (Heart attacks, high blood-pressure strokes, metastasised cancers etc). I really hope that the gradual relaxation of those kinds of hyper-tense attitudes about gender differentiation may help reduce these kinds of unnecessary tragedies in future...? 😔

He tried to laugh it off, saying that it wasn’t “politically correct”, but I kept asking him. Eventually he pointed over to a group of men and said that they “looked gay.” I asked what gay looked like. He responded “…like, you know, happy and kind and stuff.” I then turned to my dad and said “dad, being kind is gay,” and my grandpa tried to pretend he was using the other definition of gay, which is literally just happy. Nice try grandpa, your very lesbian, nonbinary grandchild is not letting your homophophic bullshit slide today.

After one condom mishap taught me appendages need bones in them if you want condoms to not be painful if you stretch them furhter than intended, I learned that XXL condoms generally are not (much) longer than normal: it's the diameter that changes. And the diameter varies anyway, from brand to brand and model to model. I only know German brands, but for those wondering what my very informal market research has taught me: Durex is generally roomy. Billy Boy is very snug. Chaps is inbetween. Ritex has a range of sizes and you have to check the small print to see what size you're getting. Their XXL size has the same dimensions as their eco-friendly range, with the eco-friendly range having the most discreet packaging I've ever seen condoms sold in.

  • @jokl89

Condoms mostly tell the size (diameter in millimetres) in very very small print somewhere on the package. There are actual penis rulers to find out what size you need 😅 it makes condom use much safer (less breakage) and more comfortable when people know what size to get.

Exactly. I'm a woman, but I cannot stand how much people (mostly women, and people that don't use them) don't understand about them. Just because they can stretch over your arm doesn't mean they'll actually _fit_ right. It's a sensitive area, you need the right size for a good experience. You can pull a dress over your tits 99% of the time too, doesn't mean it actually fits.

In the US, I think "pee" (said by all ages) and "pee-pee" (usually said by/to children) are more common than "wee/wee-wee." And yes, young children can also use "pee-pee" for penis (context: I have to pee/pee-pee vs. my pee-pee hurts), but when I first saw the meme with PP, I thought of urine, not penises. It might vary by what region you grew up in, but do any other US Americans here have the same experience? Love, from your friendly neighborhood linguist. With that one about the grandfather, that really hits me. My father is very anti-LGBTQ+, but is super tech illiterate, so doesn't use any social media. I barely see him and haven't lived with him since I was 14, but in 2020 I started coming out as trans and changed my name on social media platforms and everything. Initially my new facebook photo was me wearing what I thought was a nice wig at the time (it was nice, tbh). My father's father (my grandfather) isn't as tech illiterate as my father, he's about average for his age, but he does have Facebook and uses it just to keep in touch with family members. About a month after changing my Facebook name and profile picture, I was talking to my sister, who lives with my father when not in her uni accomodation. She said that my father was talking to my grandfather on the phone when he asked if he could speak to my sister. What he said on the phone was that he was proud of me and it looks like I'm happy in the new profile picture, so to tell me to keep doing what makes me happy. Then he asked her if my father knows, and when told that he doesn't, his response was just to say to keep it from him because he's not a very nice person and won't respond well. It really surprised me when I found out.

It's a common misconception that because condoms are so stretchy they can't be too small but that's wrong finding the right size condom is very important since it shouldn't be to large but also definitely not too small either because they break more easily and can hurt/cause harm. But if a guy tells you he's just too big for condoms in general he is obviously lying but the specific condom you might have on hand could be too small and in that case just don't have sex. Seeing people use the logic "condom stretchy so it must fit" is really annoying and harmfull. Anyways stay save Folks and there are plenty tools online to figure out what size is best for you.

The idea of Ross looking like he's leaning in for a kiss from Chandler is really funny to me. Ross, despite what he claims, is pretty homophobic in part due to toxic masculinity he learned from his dad and part because his ego was hurt when he lost his ex wife to another woman. Chandler had been assumed even by the writers of the show to be gay for a long time but he's every bit as straight as Joey. Of the 3 guys in the group, Ross is always the most bratty and insecure of his masculinity, going out of his way to flex his accomplishments and show off if he's even remotely threatened. I don't know what the exact message of the ad is supposed to be, but I'm imagining Ross lecturing the guys about something dumb and the ladies are looking at the audience like "Should we horrifically embarrass him? It would be so easy to do right now." And then they do. I mean, there is no way Ross would be able to beat Phoebe in a contest of strength. She grew up on the streets, she knows how to play dirty. And Monica is competitive as frick. There's a whole episode devoted to her beating him in sports. I'm choosing to think of this ad as "Moments before disaster" XD

  • @HobGungan

My problem with the ad is that it implies Ross could singlehandedly beat all three women simultaneously in tug-of-war when everyone knows he would have been yanked into the stratosphere (and not in the fun way).

Other people have said it, but yes, the pink kryptonite thing is real. Though nowadays, according to official lore, extended or intense exposure to it will eventually turn Superman into a woman (retconning an old comic from the 60s). Whether that's any less cringe than it turning him temporarily gay is an extremely debatable manner.

So the pink kryptonite meme was so bizarre and the picture was too much for me to let go, I had to research it. Pink kryptonite is mentioned in one page of one DC comic, in the context of a different timeline, not necessarily canon. And it was just a Smallville local telling AU Supergirl that Superman was acting weird since being exposed to pink kryptonite, while in the foreground AU Superman makes a cheesey pass at a guy at the bar. The overt boner picture is a single piece of fan art by Brad Rader, drawn in 2009. It's called Pink Kryptonite.

I never understood people being teased for their interests (or lack thereof) based on gender norms/roles but at the same time I had massive anxiety about not conforming to them in junior high/high school and tried to cover it up out of ridiculous fears instead of celebrating myself for who I was regardless of what others thought. It’s ok to express yourself however you want to or care for yourself however you want to and you don’t have to be gay or whatever people claim to do it. Life’s to short to worry/care about frivolous things so I say be yourself and be happy expressing yourself whatever way works best for you!

Oof. Unfortunately there's a lot of pressure to conform to ALL the norms in high school, not just the gender-related ones!! 😵 I think the ability to see past all that and make choices for yourself is a huge part of becoming a functioning adult? But in my experience it can be really difficult doing that as a teen with a fairly limited life experience and constantly being forced to associate with the same people by school & family dependency? I grew up when the internet wasn't a thing yet, so I'm curious if the way it offers an exposure to such a much wider range of cultures, viewpoints etc helps with that problem of narrow experience? Or do current teens find they just get caught in yet another harmful echo chamber, due to how the algorithms work...? Or a mix of both...?

For anybody wondering: the pink kryptonite is in fact a real comic, it was made in 2003 and when Superman touched the kryptonite he lost all interest in Lois lane and became interested in men. It’s actually based in stereotypes and homophobia which is sad, but there is in fact kryptonite that turns Superman gay

Look, I'm an elderly man so ignore this if you want to, but even I know that a freakin' BRA can be harmful if it isn't sized properly. And even so, people insist that women wear bras. It's not a stretch to understand that a binder needs to be fitted properly as well, and the wearer hss to know when to remove it, etc. But it's not going to be a danger as long as you learn the safe way to wear it. There definitely does seem to be the possibility of health issues around sizing and wearing, esp for young teens who're still growing...? It feels like perhaps the most effective approach might be to research as much as you can in that space, if you can find some reputable sources. That way you end up knowing what may be safest for yourself, and also have a much stronger standpoint from which you can advocate for your choices with your mama...?
