This inspired me to make my first tapestry project! I was bold and used 3 colors but everything you shared in the tutorial prepared me and was better than the written instructions that came with the pattern. Thank you so much!

Same here! I’m working on a huge one (150 x 150) of a picture of my beautiful dearly departed dog who passed suddenly in March. It’s got 20 colors and my first tapestry project…to say I’ve frogged and restarted a couple times would be an understatement. It definitely taught me how to do tapestry crochet pretty quickly, I threw myself into the fire haha

5:24 this gave me a chuckle. I just got red heart yarn to try and finish a blanket I made with all big twist. I don’t have a local Joanns and really didn’t want to wait the 6-10 days delivery time but I was shocked at how different they were not just in size but texture too. I guess I got spoiled working with only big twist for the last month and forgot how scratchy it was. But since I have this big jumbo size black yarn I figured I’d give tapestry a shot which led me here. I’ve gone full circle and need big twist again.

Great video!! Just a heads up to my left handed friends though, we have to read patterns opposite in order to have the image in the same orientation and not mirrored (this is especially important if your tapestry has words). So if you read the color work chart, you read left to right for the first row and right to left for the second row, then left to right, right to left, and so on in the snake manor as mentioned in the video. I have also heard you can just mirror the actual graph on your device and work in the same direction she talked about in the video (I personally haven't done this though). I've never done a written tapestry pattern, but I think you would probably read each line right to left instead of left to right (though I could be wrong since I've never done this method)

Yes! I’m a leftie who does tapestry and man, is it frustrating to realize I forgot to read it backwards on a specific row. Your technique is correct, you simply read it right to left. I’ve found so few tips and tricks for lefties, I get we’re not that common but it is sad. Seconding this comment ❤️

Yes! I apologize for not touching on left handed graph reading, as I am not lefty its hard for me to explain something I dont know much about, Stitch fiddle, does have the option to flip the numbers of the graph and so you could read it for a lefty I believe. My apologies I defiantly should've mentioned that for you all!

Kudos for teaching tapestry crochet! I accidentally got into my first tapestry project because the pattern writer misidentified the naming of the style of crochet. It was really difficult because there were several colors too. I had to stop and look up videos on tapestry crochet in order to complete the project. Even as I watch you, I feel like it is my least favorite type of crochet so far. I figured out a few tricks on my own to make the right side look better. And you pretty much covered those. I just started my first tapestry crochet piece using this video to help me! I also do cross stitch and sometimes use the alpha patterns from pinterest, so it's awesome that I can use my saved ones for crochet as well. My tip (more for cross stitch but might still be helpful): if you have Procreate, you can take the alpha patterns (or any similar pattern) and add in thicker lines every 5 or 10 rows/columns to help make counting easier! You can also mark off where you are this way, or use a notetaking tool like Goodnotes on an iPad and mark off as you go for those digital patterns.

a FYI for anyone that wants to use stitchfiddle since the info was not provided here is that colorblocking and written instructions and useful options as fill and move and so on are all PREMIUM options only. im a newbie so cant really see the worth with it being near 6 dollars a month rip 😮‍💨 avoid my mistake to make a custom pattern only to not be able to read it unless you want to manually count rows yourself.

I've only done checkerboard type of tapestry carrying my yarn the whole way. Ive wanted to try this but just haven't got around to it. Ty for this video, I'm sure I will do it now. I really like the look of sc, ch1, sc around the border. For blocking acrylic or cotton yarn I just hold a steam iron over the top of the crochet work. Never put the weight of the iron on the crochet work, just steam it. It's faster than spritzing with water & weighing it down or holding it in place on a blocking board waiting for it to dry. Also if u chain 3 in the corner it will lay even better. That's 1 stitch per side plus 1 for the corner.

I do a TON of pixel art to make patterns in Microsoft paint! I also will look for friendship bracelet alpha patterns, or even perler bead patterns. There are a lot of ways to find things that follow a graph format that you can then use to make a whole slew of different things, including tapestry crochet. 🖤

(I'm only 25 min in, so pardon if this is mentioned) If the first couple of rows are a solid color and I can't recall which is wrong/right side, I'll use a spare small piece of yarn of a different color and have both ends pop out on the wrong side so that the right side has that little pop of color. The 2 ends remind me "this side will have all the ends" and the other side looks clean. I do this for panels too, if I like one side more than the other and don't want to waste time later figuring out which side is which if I leave the project for too long. It's easier to tie a little bowtie knot too so it doesn't end up falling out, and when the project is done it's easy to take out

Great question! It truly doesnt matter when you do but typically I will block it after the border (Fasten off and without doing the sc row to attach the dowel) and block it then reattach my yarn and crochet the dowel on! Personal preference, but especially if I do a scallop border I like to block the piece with the border on just to make it as flat as possible!

Love the heart tapestry. Is the big yellow daisy in the background also tapestry? It's cute too.

Dana, As I am a leftie and have been crocheting for 50 years and also have severe ADHD. The frustration is too much with tapestry. I gave up about 25 years ago! Lol. But now I am wondering if in fiddle stitch there is an option to make a right-handed pattern adjust to a left-handed pattern?

Hello friend, indeed they do! Yes! I apologize for not touching on left handed graph reading, as I am not lefty its hard for me to explain something I dont know much about, Stitch fiddle, does have the option to flip the numbers of the graph and so you could read it for a lefty I believe. My apologies I defiantly should've mentioned that. Funny enough when you open a blank stitch fiddle graph it is preset for a lefty. But you can edit graphs as well to flip the numbers ( I believe) and I think that could be very helpful

I have an odd question (you have answered so many, so no offense if you don't get to this one) Can you use ribbon or other things for the edging?

When you add a new color to the wrong side instead of the right side, do you do it the same way?

You do, just make sure you flip your tail end when youre attaching to the other side so its not dangling off the right side of your project and then you dont have to weave it in later and worry about hiding it (Ive only had a couple times where ive had to add color on the wrong side of my work , typically you will be adding new color on the right side! Great question 🥰
