All The Wrong Lessons
Attempts to ‘hold the centre’ constitute a resignation to the perceived ‘forces of history’, as they serve only to cement recent left-wing cultural gains.

"Immigration laws are the only laws that are discussed in terms of how to help people who break them." Thomas Sowell

Haven’t heard that Sowell quote before - brilliant.
In one of Disraeli’s novels, he had a character described the conservatism of Sir Robert Peel as ‘Tory men, Whig measures’. Stewart is the embodiment of the modern today version of that: ‘Tory men, Blairite measures’.

I had in mind while writing that section the quote attributed (seemingly falsely) to Orwell: “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.” I.e., certain beliefs held among those on the right are, in fact, perfectly sensible, but are perceived to be extreme due to the political climate. For example, opposition to mass immigration based on the fact that almost all of the issues in the country are either caused by or exacerbated by mass immigration. To say that mass immigration should be freezed or reduced is sensible; to say that mass immigration should be continued or increased is extreme. But in the increasingly left-wing political climate, the sensible is perceived as extreme and the extreme is perceived as sensible. To put it another way, see Isaiah 5:20: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

Well, It seems we are both lovers of George Orwell, but it seems also that we have very different interpretations of what he wrote. Have you read 1984? In it, he depicts the kind of world likely to emerge from the relentless pursuit of right-wing ideology. It is a hard, cold, bitter, hateful kind of world, where love, kindness and sympathy for others are spurned. It is a world summed up in the sentence: “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face-for ever.” @@eternalengland

@1943colin if you’ve taken away from 1984 that it’s about a right-wing government you are severely mistaken. Not that I’m in favour of an authoritarian government in any case, but the book is specifically based on, and is a critique of, the Soviet Union - it’s literally a critique of a certain brand of socialism. (Yes, I’m aware Orwell was himself a socialist, but he was also heavily critical of many socialists and, to an extent, socialism itself.) You can plaster me with whatever cliches you want - as commenters sometimes do - but I’m personally in favour of less government involvement in our lives, not more. I favour strengthening community ties, devolving much governmental power to smaller units (county councils, for instance), rebuilding national industry to reduce our reliance on globalised capitalism, breaking up monopolies, and so on. All this to say: I’m not a fascist, as you seem to be implying. I’ve written elsewhere (The Spirit of Conservatism II, specifically) that I reject liberalism, socialism and fascism equally. In a word, I suppose I’m a distributist - a system which favours more freedom, not less.

@@eternalengland 1984 is a critique of both the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany combined actually and everything Orwell wrote was in his own words in favour of Democratic Socialism. What he specifically opposed of both Nazis (INGSOC is white supremacist not multi-cultural and they celebrate the deaths of foreigners. Considering you're a big fan of Enoch Powell and Rivers of Blood I can see why this aspect of 1984 would fly completely over your head. As like INGSOC you buy into the notion of white cultural supremacy) and USSR was their right wing authoritarianism, whilst in his view masquerading with a proletariat aesthetic, i.e. perverting aims of the working class to reinforce the state hierarchy of which oppresses them. (INGSOC, Nazi Germany and Soviet Union.) Whilst it may be true that you may not view yourself as a fascist. Your idea of a ideal society would consequently create a fascistic environment where in which those who are the highest bidder control everything with little to no oversight. You'd be switching whatever you perceived to be: 'tyranny of government' for: 'tyranny of corporations.' Cause you won't ever succeed in breaking apart these monpolies with isolated structures. Such could be only acheived upon dismantling of Capitalism as an idea period, which you don't address? You've a poor reading of Orwell. Please stop trying to sell off his intellect as your own. He would've treated you as he did the Spanish fascists he used for target practice. Particularly for your characterisation and dehumanisation of immigrants. Read Orwell's Notes on Nationalism.
Once you have accepted a collective delusion, admitting the error has to be avoided and denied at all costs, lest the crushing of your individual ego will follow.
Center left and center right have always won elections. Most people dont go too far either way. Hence why ukip, brexit, reform while popular as small parties never get big enough for be opposition never mind a government Same for greens Situation is not black and white. Thats a 'them or us' rhetoric. And im prettt sure labour are aiming to tackle immigration (if they do succeed) is it as black and white then?

The trouble is, the Tories are no longer centre-right. If they had adhered to actually conservative ideals over the course of the last 14 years, at least on social issues, it wouldn’t be so bad. (Economic issues are a different conversation - I’m not a capitalist and I think neo-Liberalism is a large factor in the decline of this country). I actually think Labour will address immigration to an extent, since it was probably the biggest issue of this election. Problem is, what legislative and constitutional changes will they make secretly in the background? Recall how Blair literally revolutionised the state of politics (for the worse) and he has been personally grooming Starmer for the job.
Enjoying your frustration very much 🙂

Spot on, Rory! The bulk of votes in every election since the war has gone to centre and centre left parties. The Tories have benefited from splits in the left while they remained the only right wing choice. Now the right is split and will remain so while the rabid far right splutter their incoherent cruelty and greed.
@eternalengland

The “right is split” because the Tories have moved over to the centre-left at this point. Note that Reform only received two million fewer votes than the Tories, and many of the Tory voters had to hold their noses while voting for them, only doing so because they wanted to avoid a Labour win. There is growing space for a right-wing party in Britain, left open due to the Conservative Party’s abdication of that space. Reform aims to fill it, and it seems to be working so far.
